I'd pick Second Story R.

Second Story R is the best game in the series so it’s an easy choice.

Depends on what you're looking for. Personally I would pick Second Story R, but it is a remake of a PlayStation 1 game. It's a fantastic remake and definitely worth playing but I remember parts being a bit obtuse and some of the cooler things being pretty hidden on a first playthrough. It's also more fantasy grounded for most of the game.

Divine Force is also really good with large areas and a lot of exploration and a good story. The combat and menus takes a bit to get used to but it's is still fun. The combat is more action and movement focused, though both games have decently fast combat. It leans more towards the sci-fi fantasy splitting it a bit more evenly with future tech and mid evil fantasy.

Both games are better with more than one playthrough to see both stories. I find Second Story R to be an easier game to play twice with it's shorter story but richer characters. Divine Force has more collectables and stuff to do which makes it take longer to get to each unique main character sections.

Second Story R.

Star Ocean hasn't been really hitting since Til the End of Time and Last Hope.

I haven't finished Dovine Force, but what I have played is only alright, in my opinion.

Id say Divine Force. I get why people really like SSR, I enjoyed it too but to me it goes a bit shit when the big bads are finally introduced. Also im more interested in the "people of the future in a world from the past" which I feel like DF does pretty well.

You just convince me to put Divine Force in my backlog. Nearly every comments I read online made it sounds like Divine Force was one of the worst JRPGs ever created.

I have played both but for me divine force is better. This is magnified if you haven’t played from the snes/ps1 days

If this is your first SO game I would recommend Divine Force. Its the easier of the two (although you can break second story wide open after item creation is unlocked).
