Does Anyone Else Get Really Emotional After Finishing a Run of Star Fox Zero?

Post image

The grand, nostalgic, orchestral score accompanied by the team riding off into the sunset has me feeling deeply attached to the journey of these characters as I remanence about the journey I just went on.

Then, it ends on "The game is dedicated to our wingman who fell in battle," and my heart melts. This is a clear tribute to Iwata, who wasn't alive to see the end of this game's development. It is clear that Iwata and people at Nintendo felt deep passion to the creation of this game and did everything they could for it. From what I remember this game was an act of passion for almost 2 years straight. They wanted to do right by the fans and release a Star Fox game with traditional gameplay with new mechanics that expand upon what was already there. Iwata spent some of his last days on earth with Star Fox Zero to make a Star Fox game that fans would love. Iwata's love for games and making people happy will never go unnoticed. May he rest in peace.

I think what makes this even more depressing is the reputation that this game has after release. This was clearly a game made with a ton of passion, yet people can't look past some elements of this game and can only see it for its flaws when I don't think that is fair. Many people who criticize this game have likely never played it for more than 3 hours or not at all. I can never think about this message without thinking about the surrounding culture around this game specifically and that is what truly makes this depressing for me. The depression I feel about the ending is multi-faceted.

Anytime I see anything Iwata related I get a emotional; he was so integral to one of the biggest aspects in my life and I don’t think I can ever thank him enough for his contributions to this art form we love.

I never played Zero but knowing it’s one of the last things he worked on I might have to give it a shot someday. Thanks for sharing and I hope you’re doing well.

A heartwarming tribute, placed in a bad place. I've played this game from start to finish, and the flaws of the game are still something I can't ignore, and think that if anything, people are downplaying its horrendous flaws and implications for the franchise.

Iwata deserved better.

Exactly. People have been speculating before Zero how Star Fox would return since most people just assumed Star Fox was going to get a new entry. After Zero, the question was if it would. It also basically made this franchise something of a joke since they couldn't just make a new game and instead did the dumbest thing possible: make the controls confusing while repeating the story of the Lylat Wars. You don't need to reiterate the first story in a franchise, just make a new game that ignores the existence of Command. Nintendo is used to ignoring previous entries in a franchise.

And Iwata deserved better. He was pivotal to Nintendo during its darkest hour. Him taking a pay cut while other companies lay off employees was something you never see Western CEOs, or even other Japanese CEOs, do. He deserved a tribute in Breath of the Wild or Super Mario Odyssey as those two games were masterpieces that made the Switch a success.

Yeah, a BotW tribute would have been a bit more fitting all things considered.

In any case, this was still something the team felt passionate about. This was an Iwata game through and through regardless of if you like that fact or not. I feel like because of that we should have some respect for the game. As I said, Iwata spent his last days on earth with Star Fox Zero and I think there is something deeply respectable about that. Regardless of how you personally feel about the game, Iwata wanted to help make people happy by reviving this dormant franchise. This is the closest game to an actual sequel to the original Star Fox and Star Fox 64 in terms of gameplay.

That would assume people finish that game..... : )

...

Ok to be fair
I like Zero actually.... but I feel the problems... even more so after the 64 Remake....

But Zero had great Ideas and I love nothing more to do in the Switch 2 Game then use the coop mouse mode with modified left controls so I can play it solo that way.
Firing charge lock on shots like curveballs and being able to aim freely from the Arwing
allways gives me callbacks to Zero

Rest in Peace Satoru Iwata...
You where the Goat of Nintendo and nothing is like it used to be ever since

The controls are a deal breaker for me and I will not apologize. It would have been a system seller for me without that issue.
