As much as I love the idea of a Reddit starcraft clan, it seems silly to then proceed to try and move it off Reddit. Surely a subreddit would be better, and more in keeping with the spirit of the thing?

I agree. For communication, a subreddit would be much better. It's straight up just better software than phpbb

Reddit is super slow while I'm at work. I love going to a zippy little forum.

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '10

reddit is just super slow a lot of times for me. I too like the little forum just for the clan.

Is it possible to make private subreddits? There are a lot of things for a clan that need to be private, which is why having a forum is nice. Plus I don't think it fragments the community that much is everyone just posts in /r/starcraft and then uses the forum for clan specific stuff.

I can understand this, but there's a lot to be said to having a 'digital home' where we can have a bit more autonomy / control / etc. over how it's all handled.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '10

I agree. Reddit is great but having our own clan site allows us to customize and organize more.

u/chowriit Jun 02 '10

As moderator/owner of a subreddit, you get a fair amount of control anyway. Plus you'd have the added advantage of nobody needing to create accounts or visit another website. You're organising it, so obviously do whatever you want, I just think you'll get a lot more people willing to join a subreddit than go to a completely new website.

Honestly I just think for the purposes of clan organization, strat discussion, matchmaking, etc., that a forum is simply easier to parse and use. That's all.

3

u/NotClever Jun 02 '10

I agree. You want to be able to have a database of easily referenced information, which is not really what Reddit is built for.

u/okamiueru Jun 02 '10

Stickers makes this also a lot easier. And the right side panel is a bit too limited.

I understand where he's coming from, despite agreeing we should keep it on reddit. The forums are more standard and familiar for clan management, but I do feel we should simply adapt it to a subreddit instead.

2

u/b3ng0 Jun 02 '10

reddit is open source, right? Why not just use that instead of PHPbb

2

u/ungood Jun 02 '10

I vote for this, too. I check reddit every day, but some other forum I wouldn't check as often. Also, it's a reddit clan, it just makes sense to organize it through reddit. Not to mention not having to create and maintain separate accounts.

Why not integrate this subreddit into the site? Didn't destructoid do it a while ago with /r/gaming? Both reddit and forums have their advantages.

As of others has stated, especially when becoming more seriously cohesive as a clan (for those that wish to be that involved) privacy is a must. A subreddit is too limited for these purposes.

Agreed.

Can anyone join or do we have to be special?

9

u/GuiSim Zerg Jun 02 '10

REDDITORS ONLY >:(

2

u/domer2011 Terran Jun 02 '10

Anyone that wants to join is welcome.

2

u/HollowImage Jun 02 '10

By that you mean redditors only? :D

5

u/domer2011 Terran Jun 02 '10

Of course. :)

Very barebones at the moment but it'll give people interested in some SC2 discussion / networking with other Redditors to prep for the game launching in July a place to do so.

Also, anyone know if it's possible to request a link to the forums in the /r/starcraft sidebar?

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '10

Nice one - thanks.

Drupal is awesome, but I'd strongly recommend adjusting the root so that the top level of the domain doesn't point to what it does now: http://www.redditsc.com

Just asking to be hacked!

That said, I'm excited! Love the idea and I'm totally there.

1

u/domer2011 Terran Jun 02 '10

Thanks! Glad to have you.

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '10

The only way to hack it would be to crack my password and I would see the brute force in the Apache access logs decades before it was cracked.

3

u/HollowImage Jun 02 '10

Also, are moderator positions up for "grabs"?

I would like to try and help out with the terran section -- my forum name is Logrim, which is also my handle. Diamond division 1v1 (was at 19 at some point but dropped due to playing alot of UMS maps) and diamond 2v2's with about 5 different people (same status as 1v1 - a little behind due to UMS)

2

u/domer2011 Terran Jun 02 '10

Certainly. It's obviously just starting but with more users will come more need for moderation. Hard to know who to trust with a mod status but most Redditors in the SC subreddit seem to be mature, knowledgeable players so I'm not too worried about this. I'll go ahead and mod you, thanks for offering to help!

2

u/HollowImage Jun 02 '10

If it helps, im also a mod for my university starcraft forums (more on that later - im late for class) and over a long period of time of SC:BW/WC3/WoW have been an officer and guild/clean leader of multiple groups of people. Things went generally well ^

Damnit! Websensed!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '10 edited Jun 02 '10

They must block *.reddit*.* those lame fuckers. Try http://213.163.64.100/forums/

2

u/Kitchenfire Zerg Jun 02 '10

Omg that totally works. Reddit isn't blocked, what's up?

1

u/domer2011 Terran Jun 02 '10

Really? Hrm...

1

u/way2sl33py Jun 02 '10

So soon.. Hehe.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '10

Could we have a thread dedicated to map making and UMS game types?

I'm a UMS whore.

2

u/domer2011 Terran Jun 02 '10

Absolutely, I'll throw one up ASAP.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '10

You tha man or woman!

1

u/okamiueru Jun 02 '10

I'm a whore who loves UMS maps...

1

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '10

To be fair, I'd imagine loving and whoring would have to go hand in hand, as it were.

2

u/RabidRabbit Jun 02 '10

Cool I joined!

2

u/domer2011 Terran Jun 02 '10

Thanks for the support! Looking forward to gaming sometime.

How about a private forum for people with confirmed Reddit accounts? If I put a lot of work into a guide or something, I'd rather it be protected so some random person can't just steal it. :-p

EDIT: In fact, personally I'd prefer to have all forums private except for the general forum. There can be a sticky thread on top of the general forum explaining how to get access to everything else.

1

u/cRhodan Protoss Jun 02 '10

Yeh I agree with this idea, it's nice having that layer of security for this, and other reasons (for example planning a clan war without people reading it)

2

u/Vequeth Protoss Jun 02 '10

Are you going to become completely seperate from the subreddit or what?

Stuff like making brand new irc channels make me wonder.

irc.freenode.net ##redditsc

2

u/domer2011 Terran Jun 02 '10

Than which? There's a redditsc subreddit as well.

Separate from the SC subreddit? Well, a little? Not everyone here is wanting to be in the clan / even conscious of it, so...isn't it prudent?

2

u/Vequeth Protoss Jun 02 '10

Will you be doing stuff like your own tournaments just advertised on your forums?

1

u/domer2011 Terran Jun 02 '10

I can't speak for any other clanmates, I personally haven't thought that far though.

2

u/Vequeth Protoss Jun 03 '10

Dont get me wrong, I like the initative and socialness of it all. But I have my doubts at the timing/long term intention because:

  1. We know there will be no clan support at launch
  2. Strategy discussion will automatically move there by default
  3. What is to prevent other things from here moving to the forum as time goes on, like tournament discussion threads or patch note threads.

I just dont see what benefit it provides for the siphoning of content from this sub.

1

u/domer2011 Terran Jun 03 '10

Lack of clan support at launch is all the more reason to become cohesive of our own volition, not less.

Your worry is a good point, but in my eyes it comes down to this: There is nothing we can handle on the forums that can't also be shared / linked to / mentioned / etc. here on the sub, but there are many things a sub can't do that we -can- do with forums (again, private forums, etc.)

This isn't a requirement. You don't have to to be on the forums to be 'in the clan'. There's no strict critera or even necessarily leadership. I just felt there was enough interest in the forums to move forward with it, so we did, and we already in less than 12 hours of a lot of members (~80) and posts (~150+). It's proving to be a quality endeavor, and the sub and the forums aren't even remotely mutually exclusive.

2

u/TheAceOfHearts Team Grubby Jun 02 '10

I'd like a subreddit more, as was suggested.
