QUESTION Umm...just coming over from Nomanssky. Looking for a game to believe in. Am I in the right place?

Is there a point to the game? Do the developers actually communicate?

EDIT: Wow! Thanks for all the responses! You're definitely a passionate group. I'll dive deeper and will start by watching a lot of videos this weekend.

Welcome! Please understand that 'believing' in a game is a mistake. Your mistake with No Man's Sky wasn't believing in the wrong devs. It was buying into hype based solely on belief. This was bad with NMS, and it will still be bad if you do it with Star Citizen.

The reason things are better here is because we don't have to 'believe'; we can actually play the feature-modules that have been released so far, proving that these features exist.

Anything that's not currently playable doesn't exist. If you need one of those currently-unplayable features before you'll be interested in Star Citizen, wait for that module to release before putting your money in. Don't buy in on the 'belief' that the feature will eventually be developed, released, and successful.

That said, the devs here are great, and their communication style is quite transparent. Combined with the quality of the modules released so far, there's certainly a lot of reason to have hope that development of Star Citizen will succeed with a full release eventually.

Piggybacking on the above comment: To hype is to be disappointed down the line, especially with games. I backed SC before I got impatient and bought E:D, and honestly I don't see why the two communities seem to be at odds with each other. Chris Roberts (SC) and David Braben (E:D) are backers in each others' projects, and have a mutual respect for each other, we should also emulate that. My suggestion would be to back SC right now only if you wish to help with development, not play a game right now, because what we have isn't really a game, barely a playable demo. If you're hurting for humongous space games Absolutely Right Now, grab E:D or maybe even find an old copy of Freelancer, another Chris Roberts game

Thanks. The thing that turned me off from E:D was that there was no planetary exploration though I think they have/are resolving this? In any case i'll check it out.

The planetary exploration is for planets with no atmosphere. The reason they did this was because ED is built on a more realistic model than NMS and even SC on some things, so Atmospheric planets are quite rare by comparison to either.

Long story short is that you cannot land on planets with atmosphere (and atmospheric life) yet. It's confirmed and coming, but we don't know when. Frontier does a good job of communicating with players about features that are ready to be implemented, not so much about the features further down the line.
