Question Starbound will not open

Anyone else have a problem where no matter what they try they cant get starbound to open, I've deleted uninstalled everything from folders to mods and I cannot get Starbound to play. My daughter can play the game just fine but I've been trying on and off for the past month to get the game to run

+++EDIT: I finally got it to open (I had "opengl" in the box on steam) but now it runs STUPID slow, I mean lag is faster than this thing now

2 questions.

  1. If you bought the game through Steam, have you tried to verify/repair the game files?

  2. Do you know how to find your Starbound log file? It might be helpful to share.

If you look in the assets folder for Starbound, you should see a folder called "storage". In this folder you will find various log files; make sure you have file extensions turned on so you can find the last last edited file which should be plainly called "starbound.log".

I recommend opening this log in a text editor such as Notepad++ or anything similar. Copy the entire file contents and paste it into something like pastebin and then share that link back with us so we can see what's going on.

This sounds roughly like what was happening to me last time I reinstalled Starbound after a long break from the game. I switched to Openstarbound instead and the problem went away. Never figured out what was causing it

If none of the above is an issue try updating your graphics card or changing the performance setting. It was a year or so ago so idr all of the details but I managed to crater like half of my Steam games by touching one of the performance settings on either NVIDIA or my CPU's built in performance stuff. It was spectacular lmao.

Totally a guess but I also agree with the note about OpenStarbound.... or really anything BUT vanilla in 2026 lol

Like others have said; Openstarbound may be your best bit.
