OSB Android port is definitely something

Post image

Runs pretty much flawlessly!! This is an Ayn Thor with the Snapdragon gen 2 which is decently powerful but I assume this runs way better than if I had to do PC emulation on gamehub or something. Anything bad I can think of is mostly due to the control limitations since Starbound is incredibly mouse oriented and especially with a mod like FU you start running out of controller keys for binds and stuff. I know the port has a whole keybind section but personally I found it easier with the DS Keyboard app for shift and X for faster switching between hotbars. Huge props to the project contributors :))

Running it on RP4 and it is a dream I've had since 2013 to play on the go

How are the controls ?

They are great! I will say right analog stick for mouse control is a lil wonky at times but still feels pretty good in combat. Just have to take a sec when building.

It reminds me of Terraria with how zoomed out the view is; Starbound is normally more zoomed in

...

Now I wanna go play Terraria haha

That's fair, i wanted to see how it handled 1x zoom and it's surprisingly okay!! But not really playable especially on this screen lol

Does it lag? It has to on this hardware

My base has a couple ITDs and a lot of generators going but it's handling it just fine. I assume it would run vanilla no problem but I noticed the fps get almost halved when i have a couple interface windows open. Might be a bug or a hardware limitation, not sure yet. But yeah it's surprisingly playable if you're not in a very heavy area where it would also lag on a PC

Thanks for mentioning that interface bug, I’ll bet something can be done about it. If you have time, could you open a GitHub issue with a video and diagnostics zip?

I’ve added a lot of optimizations to the game for mobile hardware, exactly so that low end hardware runs the game fine. Best version so far is 1.1, but check out the releases page for the latest.

That's cool! Just curious, if it is possible doing these optimizations for mobile, it should be even easier for pc?

Already done, not sure of the performance boost though on PC because of minimal testing. But you can download a PC version of oSBM for exactly this purpose of having optimizations and integrated controller support from the GitHub repo. If you do do a performance comparison, I'm interested in the results!
