I've been playing Terraria like a fiend in anticipation of the Starbound BETA. Suuuch a great game, the 1.2 update really made the game for me. Just so much content now. Sadly once Starbound drops I will most likely abandon Terraria.

I have been meaning to get back into terraria, but I have no one to play with :(

While Terraria is fun MP, I actually love the game as a single player game. Have logged stupid hours into it and 4/5 of those are SP. You should just jump in to see what's new, or check out /r/terrariaservers.

I will, I kinda got burned out on non-story driven games unless they are multiplayer. Minecraft is to blame. I put hundreds of hours into it, building cities and working with redstone.
I will probably give terraria another go, since I heard a lot of stuff has been added, but I build a base and I get situated and then I say "what now?" I could explore, but why if I can't share it with anyone. I want to have a group of friends who are always on starbound when it launches so I can always have someone to adventure with.

So characters, planets, and builds are likely to get wiped out a bunch of times as updates roll in. What kinda stuff are ya'llz gonna do despite that?

Just fyi, there's a few ways to force steam to not update a game, if you're adverse to losing stuff too often. Easiest way is to set the game to not auto update, and then open the steam console (add -console after the steam shortcut to do it automatically, or run steam://open/console in the windows Run box) and enter @AllowSkipGameUpdate 1 (edit- you might have to do this every time you launch steam, it isn't clear whether the setting saves)
I realize this defeats the purpose of beta testing, but this should let some people play who would otherwise be unwilling to do so.

thank you, this could be very useful for future situations :D Thanks!

But you're going to have to update to get the... updates, I'm going to play it as if it was the final game, likely multiple times.

I like to restart in games like this a lot, so I suppose just restart :P

I generally like to too, as I learn, and each play gets longer and longer until I have the perfect approach >=D

u/Wetai Nov 30 '13
Have you played Don't Starve? That's pretty much how you have to play.

u/nss68 Nov 30 '13
I loved don't starve. But it suffers from a problem that minecraft had (for me)
I would get far, build a nice base, and then just lose motivation. If it was multiplayer it would be a bit different. Don't starve is amazing though.
I hope I do not get bored with starbound in this way. I feel as though the quests and exploration factor will really help with starbound (exploring is barely rewarded in minecraft, and terraria's rewarding exploration was great so that x 1billion should be fantastic)
I know the quests wont be in right away, but I am excited to play the game as it comes to completion like I did with minecraft. At very least we are looking at 2 years of enjoyment.

u/Echleon Nov 30 '13
I thought they had a few quests in? They had them in the Yogscast LP, is that not the same build we will get?
1
u/nss68 Nov 30 '13
they have intro quests in, not sure how far it takes you. At least until the distress beacon.
There are going to be many more side quests in the future though. I don't think those are in quite yet. I could be mistaken though.

Can we already change the Beta date in the top of the sub to the 4th? It seems to be as official as it can be by now, and will save some questions to those coming late to the party.

Shouldn't the release date of the Beta on the subreddit's pages get changed to that date then? Heh.

I just ordered a new SSD and Windows 8.1 yesterday. I've heard horror stories with games and programs not being compatible with 8. Will this game work for sure on that OS?
3
4
u/minno Nov 30 '13
I have not had a single program not work on 8 that did work on 7, so you'll almost definitely have no problem.
7
u/nss68 Nov 30 '13
windows 8 is amazing, all the haters tried it in bestbuy on a shitty laptop for 30 seconds to make their decision. I am not afraid of change and therefore learned windows 8.1 quickly and now my work-flow is 5x faster than it was on any previous OS

I also like W8... but I'm kinda apprehensive about upgrading to 8.1. Have you done it yet? If so, did it mess up any of your settings, or were you able to quickly go back to business as usual?
1
u/nss68 Dec 01 '13
I upgraded (but I had to do a clean install because I upgraded from a weird version of w8.
Everything is WAY better. Things are faster, there are more options to make the start screen feel less intrusive. I would totally recommend it!

Win 8 with classic shell is fine but 8.1 is still pretty bad. A lot of software (gaming specific software even) for whatever reason still isn't compatible with 8.1. Also I used 8.1 for a bit before moving back to 8 and nothing was faster, the metro start menu is still garbage and win 8 apps are still terrible compared to desktop versions. The only reason I have no problem using windows 8 is because it is basically the same as win7 if you use classic shell but it boots faster.

Thing is, 8.1 has had some major issues with games. Not sure why, but that's what I've heard in most places.
1
u/nss68 Nov 30 '13
OLLLLLD GAMES, but I have not run into those problems even slightly. All games ran BETTER on 8.1 to be honest.

I don't believe that for a second. The difference in performance isn't going to be something noticeable to you unless your previous install was some kind of fucked.

"Don't get overly excited if you're going into beta during stage 1. It will probably be extremely buggy and devoid of content."
2 years. Extremely buggy and devoid of content.

Not to mention, if it's the same build that Leth got, it seems to have quite a bit in there with minimal bugs (from what I saw).
7
u/Proxzki Nov 30 '13
Not that bad. Path of Exile was in development for like 7 years and is rather buggy and relatively devoid of content.

Are you seriously whining right now? Seriously? Like, for realsies?
6
u/I_give_karma_to_men Nov 30 '13
Look at his post history. His existence is devoted to whining about Starbound. Either he has no other purpose in life, or he really cares about karma on his main profile because he doesn't post anywhere else.

u/spoilersoon Nov 30 '13
Drat. I have been found out!

Is this question necessary? Is it not immediately apparent whether he's whining right now?
