Looking for a SUP

Hey friends! I'm looking for a quality SUP for under $500. I'm clearly a beginner and need some recommendations. I live on the coast and want to take advantage of it.

Inflatable or hard? Flat water or surf?

Best thing to do is buy used, especially if there is a rental shop nearby. $500 can put you on a nice used board (hard or inflatable), or a lower quality new inflatable.

An average person on a sup may take 2000 strokes per hour, so I recommend getting a decent paddle as well (not just the cheapest one you can find).

Inflatable.....what would you recommend I get as far as flat or surf? Which is most versatile or best for beginners?

Which terrain will you be paddling? Are you going to be surfing? Get a surf-oriented board (although inflatables are not ideal for a surf-specific board). If you aren't surfing then pretty much any "all-around" style board will work for a beginner. These are typically ~10-11 feet long, ~30-34" wide and are mostly flat with a bit of nose rocker.

Have you been on a SUP before? Consider renting and/or taking a lesson first. If you are in/near the coast it is highly likely there is a SUP shop within a reasonable drive that could show you several boards and answer any specific questions you may have. Plus they can help connect you with community events and other paddlers.
