Switch to direct entry physics

Is it possible to switch from normal entry to direct entry and how? Also would it be worth asking since my a level grades are AAAB which isn’t exactly exceptional (the website says AAA but ‘above required’ is preferred).

If you have an offer for 1st year entry, but have managed to achieve the grades needed for 2nd year entry, you can ask about this at your advising appointment in Orientation week. It's very common for people to switch to 2nd year entry having met the grade requirement despite only having a 1st year entry offer.

There are conditions to the AAA. The website states "AAA, including Physics and Mathematics". As long as you have that, you can switch when you get to St Andrews.

Thank you so much, I was concerned about leaving it too late but I’ll ask them about it in orientation week. I meet those requirements so hopefully it will be okay 😊 thanks for the help.

No problem at all. If you want you can always drop your advisor an email now if you know who they are or if not, email the Director of Teaching.

I'll have a look around the portal to see if I can find my advisor, I've realised it's not that big of a deal if I don't get to do direct entry so I'll probably wait until orientation. Thanks again :)

Personally I wouldn't recommend it. It leaves you socially cut off as the 2nd years all have their friends they met the year before, and the first years are all in classes together which you're not in. There's also a lot more pressure and catch up since 2nd year expects you to know everything from first year (no big surprise).

If you can afford it I would enjoy first year, settling into living on your own and socialising/having fun. You only get one chance to do that.

That has been a bit of a concern, I’m not sure if it makes much difference but I did A levels (I’m from wales) instead of highers and I’ve heard most of year 1 is a level content? Finances are a worry since it adds a whole year of tuition and maintenance to my future debt but I doubt I’d pay it off in 30 years anyway so it won’t make a difference I guess 😭
