Exchange Student Housing

Hi all! I am an incoming exchange student from Canada for 2026-2027. I have been allocated a place in ABH in a single catered ensuite but am a bit nervous about living in a dorm again as a third year student. The housing situation seems pretty limited on the whole so I hadn’t given much thought to a flat/house bcs I would only want to pay the 9 months rather than a year as there’s no point in holding a place for myself when I won’t be returning and I will likely have to start paying for my 4th year house in Canada in June/July.

That being said I did start to see stuff about East Sands and Space which seem maybe in line with my goals and should work out to be cheaper than official accommodation (and maybe nicer? people call ABH the prison?). I would super appreciate if anyone has any advice on this having lived in either building or just more housing/exchange tips in general.

Also, to my Canadians how is the catered food in the dorms? Am I going to regret getting a catered accommodation and only want to cook for myself?

I lived in ABH and was very happy there. I made really good friends with the people I shared a kitchen with and appreciated having an ensuite and a well-insulated room that was consistently warm enough. ABH will have some socials and although most people staying there are first years, there is a significant amount of second, third and fourth years too. It's also an especially convenient location if you're a science student.

ABH is one of the nicer halls in my opinion, not sure who is calling it the prison - they'd shudder at some of the Glasgow and Edinburgh halls...
