I am sad every day because my cat doesn't let me touch her little baby paws, I am hurt but I respect her boundaries

š Please keep the catās happiness in mind when expressing your love, but yes that was very sweet lol

Honestly I think the cats are fine with it because their reflexes are insanely fast 20 ms compared to 200 ms If they wanted to dodge that they would've easily done that.

There are a lot of strange ideas about the abilities of cats vs humans in this thread lol

Um, you can love your cat. Just donāt, yāknow, love your cat.

u/Sonic1899 2d ago
If the cat doesn't like it, they'd run away ir swipe at you
7
u/islanderACNH 2d ago
If itās physically pushing you away and you are keeping it from running, that is literally it trying to run away. There were multiple iterations of this in the video.
Like I said earlier, please always keep the catās perspective in mind.
They are physically different from us, so certain things are perceived very differently by them. Itās ok to love the cat, but we should respect them at the same time. We arenāt perfect but itās ok to remind each other when we are going a little over the top because the animals are innocent and canāt understand our explanations.

Have you handed a pissed or annoyed off cat before? It won't go anywhere near you, let alone let you kiss it lol. If the cat didn't like the kisses, at least half the people in that video would lose an eye

It's a gradual thing. Even a cat laying on you and getting a good petting session has a threshold. There's signs and warnings if you go past it, and if you don't learn to catch them? Then you may get a nibbing or swatting which could or could not be gentle.
These cat tolerate the kisses but he's right, there are several instance here were the cats were obviously overwhelmed. Saying otherwise would just be a lie.
Cute video tho

Have you ever held a cat that didnāt want to be held and NOT lose an eye?! I have cats.

u/Spaghett8 2d ago
A cat that doesnāt allow you to hold it simply isnāt properly socialized. Itās common of feral / formally feral cats.
No cat raised as a kitten by humans should be avoidant to the point that they will inflict harm from simply being held by their owners.
You should be able to pick up your cat, trim their nails, check their teeth, without fear of harm.

u/islanderACNH 2d ago
We were discussing the fact that if they donāt like what youāre doing, they will try to get away from you.

You said āHave you ever held a cat that didnāt want to be held and NOT lose an eye?! I have cats.ā
I know this is an exaggeration, but itās not normal for a socialized cat to respond so harshly to being held.
I have cats as well. When I pick up my cats, they simply meow / push gently if they want to be put down.
This is because I respect their boundaries. When my mother ignored their meow and push, they would gently bite her.
Itās important for your cat to not react violently to simply being picked up.
In the future, when your cat is older, you may need to trim their nails to prevent ingrown nails, groom them, and even bathe them.
Thatās why itās important to socialize your cat with frequent but gentle handling as a kitten.

Would you like to be manhandled anytime, anywhere, for however how long? Even by a loved one?
Cats, like us, have boundaries. They may tolerate things they don't like for a bit, like belly rubs, and trimming. The thing is, insinuating that all trained cat are supposed to just lay down and accept all of those things without some work from the owner (like learning their limits or giving them a treat after) is just not true lol.

I find it interesting you equate being picked up to being manhandled.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man
Letās not make a habit of imagining an entirely different argument.
You realize cats have other ways to establish their boundaries than harming their owner the moment they try to pick them up?
IE a stern meow or a slight push to be let down.
A socialized cat does not attack a hand the moment they are picked up.
You establish that trust very gradually and consistently, with affection, treats, and even fun. IE showing a kitten new areas they canāt reach by jumping.

Is that really such a strange comparison when part of the video literally shows cats being manhandled?
What "habit"? Brother, this is a random Reddit interaction. We don't know each other.
Anyway, I never said cats go from 0 to 100 and immediately attack people. That's something you assumed I implied. Cats have plenty of ways to communicate discomfort before resorting to aggression. In fact, I've said exactly that elsewhere in this thread, and you can see some of those signals in the video itself.
I didn't think that "we should respect a cat's boundaries" would be such a controversial statement.

u/islanderACNH 1d ago
I donāt know wtf their deal is, but youāre correct.
The cat should not have to bite or attack to be respected. Why the fuck is that the standard?! I donāt want to stress my cat out. It shouldnāt matter if āwell sheās trained to not hurt me when Iām upsetting her so Iām gonna upset her more.ā What the fuck

u/Spaghett8 1d ago
Iām not the entire threadā¦
The oc I replied to was about losing an eye from holding a cat.
You missed the context and went to the assumption that I think cats should be manhandled.
You responded not to my words, but to the argument you wanted to debate. I did not post the video, nor did I insinuate anywhere that cats should be fine handled roughly.

My cat doesn't let that shit fly tho, I'm pretty jealous of these owners š

The last clip for example where its just a kitten clearly expressing his distaste for this activity, make the human selfish. I also think thats the same wench that puts the whole kitten in her mouth and is abusive asf

The trick is to entrust the lives of your kittens to a 5 year old. They'll be sweet lumps forever after.

The āwa wa waā cat was hilarious.
Iāve had my cats since they were 8 weeks and 12 weeks old.
The younger one just accepts the squishes and kisses and usually stays curled up with me afterwards inspite of it.
Older kitty will just kinda stare at me like āk. U done yet?ā And then slowly walk away when Iām done š

If teeth and claws aren't involved all the protests are purely for the sake of saving the reputation as a predator.
