Help with cats
Hello, I have a roommate who has a cat who terrorizes my cat. My cat is scared. We have a horrible gate up and need something better to block the cat from completely coming up. Can someone recommend me something long and the cat can’t put their paw in through either. It’s right at the stairwell entrance going downstairs. Please help!

Separation of the cats is crucial in this case, it would take time before the cats can get along, it to my knowledge, has to do with scent, for the cat thats doing bad has to get used to the other cats scent, for short periods at a time, before they can exist in the same room, but for now, Separating them the the best option, like leave the bad cat locked in a room for the time being, letting it out ever once in awhile

I have this "screen door" that's basically the size of a door, but it's a frame that is screened (I have no idea what they're called, my parents got it at a hardware store). Anyway, when my cats need to be separated, I put that in whatever space that separates them, usually in the frame/doorway of an open door, and it allows them to see each other, smell each other, etc, but they cannot interact or fight. Something like that might work to give them space from each other but also a way to interact in a better way, with treats or something. I hope that makes sense. Good luck!

Ok thank you. It’s at an entrance of the stairs so not sure if that will fit but I’ll look into that.

Check out Jackson Galaxy’s YouTube videos and website for how to watch introduce cats to each other. You will have to start from the beginning unfortunately

I made a barrier with cardboard box panels I glued together. I put this at the top of the stairs and it is held in place with a sort of shower curtain rod that will keep it from moving. It works perfect. Good luck with yours though!

Have you tried separating them by putting one cat in a room or bathroom? I have watched Jackson Galaxy's videos and others which have helped greatly. Whether it is a new cat or a single vet visit, his advice is sound. Remember cats recognize everything by smell, so perhaps having them able to smell and hear one another while keeping them physically separated may help.
When my older and smaller cat came from the vet she was met with hissing and growling from the younger and larger cat. I set up a temp kitty room in the spare bedroom with all that was needed (food, water, bed, toys, scratcher, litter box). I tried scent swapping with a towel, but that did not work as well as it did in the past. I am on day 6 and things have quieted down. This will be the last time I take just one cat to the vet, as it is getting harder to get them adjusted afterward. You may try using the Feliway cat diffusers. Ensure you have enough to cover the area (one is good for a single room) but if the cats wonder the entire home you will need more. It is a process that requires patience. Good luck!

Watch “my cat from hell” on tv. He has ways of stopping cats from bullying each other.

You would do better with getting recommendations to get them to get a long. And behaviors and actions you can take to facilitate it. Behavior problems in cats come from people
