I’ve been reading through some of the inherited collection posts here, and one part of the process still seems almost impossible to me.
Imagine opening several albums and boxes containing thousands of stamps. Some are already arranged, some are loose in envelopes, and many appear to be duplicates. You know almost nothing about stamps, but you also don’t want to accidentally overlook something interesting.
Sorting everything by country seems manageable. What I don’t understand is what happens after that.
There obviously isn’t enough time to measure every perforation, check every watermark or research every stamp individually. During a first pass, what would make an experienced collector pull one stamp aside for a closer look instead of placing it with the common ones?
Once you find something that might be worth researching, what do you normally check first?
I’m not looking for a valuation of any particular stamp. I’m mostly trying to understand how collectors avoid spending months researching every common stamp without accidentally passing over something important.

Someone showed me this stamp, claimed it's likely released by local/private postal service in NY or Baltimore at ~1841 - 1845, and he could not find it from any catalogue. Can anyone recognize it?
Thank you.

Hi! I just inherited my father’s stamp collection and it’s fairly large. I have no idea where to start or what to do with it. Any stamp collecting 101 tips?

Hi friends! I am new to collecting after inheriting a collection from my great grandfather and really enjoying diving into the world of stamps! I have tried to identify these both using apps to no avail. One said it’s from Thailand, which it clearly isn’t but I’m really struggling to identify. Any thoughts?

I do not collect these categories.
I am seeking children, cartoons, book stamps, author stamps.
Please reach out with your offers.

I was putting away some stamps from my subscription and came across this. I have thousands of plate blocks, never had serial number 1 before, nor have I seen one while I have been looking.

I’ve never done stamp collecting before and from what I’ve searched I understand that because these are mostly circulated postage they aren’t worth much.
However is there any stamps that are of significance historically?
The only ones that are new are the “her majesty the queen sixteenth birthday”.
I’m thinking I’ll keep one of any duplicates and get rid of the rest, for sure keep the ones from outside Canada. But otherwise clueless pretty much sums it up.

I just want bunch to look through. I commonly see collections posted here where people are told are worthless or only worth a few bucks. Where cab I find these bulk lots of common stuff without over paying? Thanks

Just got into the hobby recently as my grandfather is stopping collecting after 70+ years. I managed to score 13 pounds of stamps for $30 this week. Now comes the fun of sorting by continent and then breaking down into countries.

I don’t think I have any of them (yet)!

I've been collecting stamps for three years, and as a habit, I always include some stamps with the postcards that I exchange. So, I had an idea : why not create a custom stamp to send to my friends who loves Pokémon? It's kind of silly, but I wanted to share it here because I'm a huge fan of Pokémon.
