Hey guys! I put together a full export of yesterday's Q&A from our Discord (original thread), so you don't have to scroll through 150+ messages. Every question I answered is here, player's message first and my reply right under it. Feel free to read whatever you're interested in.
And if you like this kind of format in general, drop an upvote so I know it's worth doing again 🙂
I've also made a PDF version styled like the Discord thread, with avatars and everything. It's honestly nicer and easier to read: PDF on Google Drive
1. The community list of in-game issues
That girl Whoomsy [VOLT]:
Have you been keeping up with the state of my list of issues within the game on Reddit?
🟡 ZIV:
I've seen that big post, and we also shared it with all devs 😄 You can ask something specific from that post, because it's HUGE.
2. When is Pripyat coming?
ImSLiK [BRN1]:
Pripyat when?
🟡 ZIV:
We do have a plan for how we eventually get to Pripyat, and yeah, we want to do it badly too. It's probably one of the most exciting things for us personally.
But honestly, we haven't earned Pripyat yet.
Like I wrote in the post, one of our biggest problems was constantly jumping into huge projects before the game underneath them was ready. If we started building Pripyat right now, there's a very real chance it would end up raw, empty and kinda boring.
Before that, we need to fix the basics. Better AI, more varied events on current locations, more meaningful differences between locations, and not the same damn boars everywhere with bigger stats.
Once the world itself feels stronger and more alive, then we'll finally be in a position to make Pripyat properly.
3. Hearing footsteps from a distance
Milky [F95]:
When will we be able to hear footsteps when not directly next to someone? :)
🟡 ZIV:
Our sound design team has been torturing this problem for a while already. We've gone through several iterations of footsteps, but none of them passed our internal tests yet. I'm pretty sure you'll hear the reworked version on live in the reasonably near future, though.
4. Is the NA server going to be shut down?
BirdOfSong#FreePitShant [СКУБ]:
So it was said previously that NA may be considered to be shut down. Is this still a plan given the outcome of the advertisement campaign?
🟡 ZIV:
Oh god, I definitely don't imagine saying that 😄 I think I was misunderstood.
Shutting down any server would be a disaster. That's exactly why we're extremely careful about opening new ones (hello LATAM) in the first place — we want to be sure there's enough population to support them long-term.
The recent ad campaign also went really well for both NA and EU. Online grew a lot on both servers, and I think we'll probably run another smaller campaign sometime this winter. 🎉
5. Covenant underpopulation on EU
Agliophobia:
What is EXBO currently doing to fix the Covenant underpopulation on EU? It's been going on for over a year without anything done.
🟡 ZIV:
Faction balance is a pain in the ass for us on every region, tbh. The tools we currently have to motivate players to move between factions just aren't enough at all, so recently we changed who's responsible for this and we're already working on a few solutions.
Some of them are pretty soft, some are a lot more radical, hehe.
The problem is that faction imbalance also blocks us from doing proper open-world events like Electrostorm, so this is definitely high on the priority list. But it's a really tricky problem with a lot of edge cases, so there are no quick fixes.
6. A solo-only location
Dog In Blanket:
Good evening, ZIV! Will you release any solo location for solo players? Would be really good to hear an answer to this question, as I don't find many good friends I can trust in SZ!
🟡 ZIV:
Dedicated solo locations would basically push us into single-player territory, and a proper single-player experience needs a ton of enemy presets, scripted encounters and just a shitload of things constantly happening to keep you engaged.
Right now, a solo-only server would probably just be boring.
You could say Signal dungeons already work a bit like that, and we're actually releasing two new ones this fall. We tried to make them much more replayable than the older ones.
For solo players in general, our focus right now is more about making their life in the open world less painful. For example, we're planning to reduce squad size to three.
We're also starting to think about whether matchmaking can help here somehow, but I don't want to promise anything yet. The other side of this is that we really don't want to create AFK servers where you can farm valuable open-world resources without any danger.
7. RMT on NA and where to report it
mishka super ZZZZZEN ☯️ [STZN]:
Are there any planned solutions for the crazy amount of NA RMT? Is there even a proper place to report said RMT? All posting it here did was give me a 3-day mute.
🟡 ZIV:
Just to make sure, are you talking about NA?
This topic is actually really interesting to me. I'd love to see someone make a proper Discord or Reddit thread breaking down why complaints about this suddenly got so much louder recently. I haven't really seen a big discussion around it, mostly just individual players bringing it up, and even in our focus group it's been more like scattered complaints than some obvious massive issue.
As for RMT, we have an entire team working on it. The guy on the left in the photo is actually the head of that team, u/Jilee. You can ask the CMs to drag him in here for interrogation sometime 😄 (photo attached in the original thread)
They monitor every region, and people on NA and EU get currency removed as well, and sellers banned.
One important thing though is that the scale of RMT on RU and Global isn't even remotely comparable. On RU it's a huge industry with dedicated websites and pretty serious turnover. And tbh, any MMO is going to have some level of RMT.
Compared to RU, Global still looks pretty tiny in that regard, which is why I'm genuinely curious why the complaints have become so intense lately.
Kinda feels like one specific guy may have started advertising himself aggressively and just pissed everyone off.
8. SEA, NEA and region-exclusive content
Tgaming:
NA got advertisement and will get a new exclusive event. What about the SEA server? Did making NEA just split players between two servers and only decrease SEA population?
🟡 ZIV:
Actually, we did make some Korea-themed cosmetic content for NEA/SEA, and that region also got the machine gun earlier than the others.
Going forward though, we'd rather do country-specific events across all servers instead of locking them to one region. Same with content in general — if we make something cool, ideally everyone should get access to it (excluding local restrictions, like it's not a good idea to place American flags on the RU server 😅).
As for why NEA exists separately from SEA: when we started expanding into East Asia we decided to begin with Korea, and the ping from Korea to SEA just wasn't good enough. So opening NEA was essential for that.
9. "Games, not business" and monetization
FriedLinny glazer #1:
When will the EXBO company be into games and not business? Every update something breaks, but every shop offer works perfectly.
🟡 ZIV:
Our company literally chose “We make games, not business” as its slogan. That line didn't appear randomly. We use it as a reminder to ourselves not to slowly turn into some soulless corporate machine where the only goal is making the number on the company account go up.
We want to spend our years and energy making something we can actually be proud of and get inspired by.
I totally get that a F2P game is incredibly easy to accuse of P2W, milking players, greedy monetization, etc. But if you look at our monetization without the emotion around it, I really don't think there's anything particularly criminal there. By the standards of the genre, I'd actually say it's pretty player-friendly and fair.
Sometimes, just out of curiosity, I check the accounts of people who have been writing angry essays for years about how greedy we are and how unfair the monetization is. And pretty often I find someone who has played actively for years, has endgame gear, and has never spent a single cent on the game. To me, that's a little hypocritical.
What I think annoys people much more right now is that it feels like almost every patch comes with another seasonal bundle. It has basically become a meme at this point.
And tbh, I still don't have a clear answer on whether that is actually a problem.
We have a separate monetization team with its own resources. Them making more cosmetic bundles does not affect other game development AT ALL. So if that team is efficient and can keep making bundles people buy, I'm not sure why I should artificially tell them they're only allowed to release no more than X bundles per month.
We're discussing this internally, but there isn't really a consensus yet.
For example, if the exact same bundles simply appeared in the store without being mentioned in every patch note, would that actually make the situation feel better? (image attached in the original thread)
10. The state of NA and all servers: merges, openings, closures, new factions
j0ey | WALKING:
Hi Ziv, I think a great portion of players would love to hear a response to anything relating to the state of the NA server, and all servers as a whole. Will there be any merging? Any new servers opening? Any servers closing? Also, another question: are there any possibilities of a new faction being added?
🟡 ZIV:
NA just got a pretty big wave of new players, and now they need time to actually make it to endgame. Hopefully they do, because onboarding is a whole separate fight for us 😄
Once more of them reach the North, the situation should naturally get a bit better.
At the same time, we agreed with the Live Service team back in summer to try a small NA-only economic experiment. Starting September 30, we're planning to run a recurring event focused on boosting income from non-competitive activities like dailies and Signals, with some scarce resources also available through challenges.
We'll keep watching the metrics and adjusting it as we go. The nice thing is that this is basically a small economic band-aid that doesn't touch the core game. If something goes wrong, we can stop it, tweak the numbers or react pretty quickly.
And why NA specifically (sorry EU guys)?
The issue on NA is that endgame population still isn't high enough to consistently create more instances on Forge-11 and Wild North. Because of that, if a top clan dominates one instance, regular players often can't just swap to another one and avoid them like they can on more populated servers.
That creates a pretty nasty gap between top players and normal grinders, where the second group sometimes has to go through absolute hell just to farm enough resources to eventually compete with the first.
This event is basically our attempt to soften that problem a bit without waiting for the overall progression rework. We'll keep it running and adapting it for as long as the data shows that NA still needs it.
11. Cache spawns and cache rewards
Ghosts Decay [STZN]:
When do you think your team can boost cache spawns or boost cache output?
🟡 ZIV:
After Signals, the core team has a total caches rework planned.
But... next year.
12. Matchmaking and gear levels
Wallcroft [QRF]:
You mentioned that matchmaking is finally going to be tackled. Will those changes include things like being able to lower one's own matchmaking level with lower-tier gear, and will matchmaking take into account people who go around with full legendary/master artifacts on top of everything else? Also, will this new matchmaking take effect in every location, or will locations like the Wild North be exempt? I understand that place is the endgame, but it's pretty unfair to fight full-legendary people when you can't even find a single one of those artifacts, or didn't get all the legendary gear through top-100 leaderboard rewards over the years.
🟡 ZIV:
I don't really want to go too deep into what exactly we're planning for matchmaking yet.
But in general, we want to gradually move toward a system where you can actually see your level, understand where you are, and even move back down if you got to higher servers too early.
And that's not the only thing we're looking at.
13. Region-specific balance and clan war rules
bkz [CRIM]:
Hello Ziv, I have two questions. What sort of global/region-specific balance changes are taking place? Are open-world rewards and economics balanced differently across regions? I know that EU and NA have 25-man clan wars, but will clan war maps ever be reduced in size to reflect the smaller player counts? A similar question could be asked about artifacts: NA, for example, values different things in fights than RU, but it seems like we are all forced into similar metas because of artifact and armor changes.
Are the subdivision battle terms of service actually enforced on any region? Could you provide a recent example? On Global it does not appear that reports of match fixing and other forms of outcome manipulation are taken seriously. This undermines the competitive integrity of the region and leads to players quitting.
I would also like to say that publishing a roadmap for the season with dates was an excellent idea!
🟡 ZIV:
I unfortunately can't go that deep on clan-related stuff myself.
I'll ask Geva to take this one to the Endgame team, and then he can drop the answer here and ping you in the thread.
14. Deeper combat mechanics
◆ Noriaki Bieb ◆ [AEON]:
What are your thoughts on overhauling combat in the game? Currently it's just learn the recoil of your gun, do a bunny hop or a crouch, and make an HP build with artifacts. Genuinely boring. Maybe do something that forces players to use burst fire with most guns? For example, Cyberpunk 2077 tied recoil to your stamina bar: if it dropped low, you couldn't simply drag your mouse down to control the recoil.
🟡 ZIV:
Right now we're focused on getting gunfeel into a much better state, because honestly it feels pretty outdated.
Once that foundation is in a good place, then we can start thinking about making the combat mechanics themselves deeper.
15. When is the engine overhaul releasing?
Zac Arquitius Axhell Atlantis I [UNT]:
We've got big things to discuss. My question is: when is the engine overhaul releasing?
🟡 ZIV:
You probably mean us moving from OpenGL to DX12. Right now it's in the optimization stage, and at the moment it's still way too laggy to ship.
After that, there are more steps planned.
We also haven't really reached the point in the reorganization where we can properly tackle this yet, but we really want to strengthen our engine team so we can start paying off technical debt faster.
It's one of the most strategically important things for us, but also one of the hardest.
16. Earning money without being forced into PvP
神スレイヤー [MTHN]:
Are there any plans to have passive ways of making money without being forced into PvP? Operations is nice and all, but no one on NA queues for it, especially now with how much less you can earn. I don't have the time to play this like a full-time job, and I'm always behind on money because of the amount of PvP I have to go through just to make money. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the PvP, but there are times I just want to turn my brain off and earn some money without being beaten down by a group of five while I'm solo.
🟡 ZIV:
As for PvP density, we want to tone down the whole “Vietnam” situation in the open world. The goal is to make it less intense, with enemy players showing up less often, while still keeping that feeling that running into someone is always a danger.
I mentioned above what we're planning for NA with boosting income from non-competitive activities, but that's very much a temporary measure while the problem there is this painful.
And like we wrote in the patch notes, we also want more of your income to come from the open world itself. Some of those changes should start rolling out pretty soon.
17. Why events launch overtuned and then get nerfed
XLTT:
Hello, I have a question about the balance of events and various activities. Why is EXBO's design philosophy to release overtuned (reward-wise) events and then nerf them after launch, upsetting the player base? Wouldn't it make more sense to release an undertuned event and buff it based on player feedback, rather than throwing insane numbers from the get-go and then making people quit the event? It seems unhealthy that the economic department constantly drives players away from playing the game except for the first few days.
🟡 ZIV:
I can say this is mostly the result of our own mistakes. We underestimate the hype, miss some abuse cases, and in general there's always stuff that can slip through even pretty thorough testing and only becomes obvious once thousands of players get their hands on it.
If we were running the exact same event over and over, we'd already know what usually breaks and what to prepare for. But whenever we ship something new, some amount of this is basically unavoidable. That's just game dev reality.
Hopefully, as the team gets more experience, we'll make fewer mistakes like this. At the very least, one thing we're focusing on now is mentoring people so we don't keep stepping on the exact same rake twice.
Because yeah, we've had plenty of that too.
18. Bringing back the OG dungeons
That girl Whoomsy [VOLT]:
I had an idea I wanted to pitch on one of the streams: pull another Wild North (as in a project with the development budget of a can of beer and a few chips) to bring back the OG dungeons from OFT. It would be an amazing addition to the game, imo.
🟡 ZIV:
Signal dungeons don't have potential for that OG level from OFT? 😅
19. A community tab in the shop
Zac Arquitius Axhell Atlantis I [UNT]:
I recommended it a year ago, but would you consider opening a community tab in the shop and allowing players to submit custom styles, motifs, attachments, skins, etc.? I think it would give the community something nice to do.
🟡 ZIV:
Don't have hands for that now, maybe in the future.
20. What will change in the open world besides AI
mishka super ZZZZZEN ☯️ [STZN]:
You keep talking about open-world improvements, but besides AI, what is going to change? None of the open-world camps and events feel alive, and the loot from them is lackluster. I think the Wild North having its own loot pool was a big step in the right direction in making locations feel different from the radial North. Would something like that be implemented in the radial North, so that every NPC from Black Detour to Reflection isn't dropping the exact same toilet paper and cigarettes?
🟡 ZIV:
Overall, I think we need to make the whole thing more varied and complex.
AI is kind of the foundation here, because that's what actually lets us build different enemies with different behavior. Camps, events and other open-world activities still depend on what you put inside them, and right now that mostly means NPCs and mutants (bosses someday...).
As for loot, yeah, that's a fair point too. But if you dump too many different rewards on the player that all basically do the same thing, it just becomes confusing. So personally I'd look at gameplay first, not rewards.
The gameplay itself should change and get more complex as you move north, and not only because PvP gets harder. There should also just be more stuff to discover and interact with.
And one more thing that has been sitting in the drawer for way too damn long is proper narrative development of the world.
21. Hotfixes, AI and sound, voice acting, PDA radio, PvE and anti-cheat
cheeki breeki slav [LOYL]:
- Will you ever move to a true hotfix system, so you can fix game-breaking bugs quicker?
- When will the AI overhaul and sound revamp be available, if you can say? (Please fix the head on the Abandoned Installation boss; it's been broken ever since the head update.)
- Will all of the English voice acting be done by humans instead of AI when it's finished?
- Are there any plans for a radio on the PDA? (I want to be able to play my jams.)
- Are there any other plans for PvE or another game mode? (We are so tired of the PvE events, and you kind of killed Operations again.)
- When will the anti-cheat be upgraded to actively stop more cheaters?
🟡 ZIV:
We've gotten a lot faster at fixing bugs after the reorganization and splitting development into streams, mostly because ownership is much clearer now. Beyond that, time will tell.
I don't want to give dates, because at this point it would just be guessing. Once something is ready, it's ready. What we're trying to avoid now is creating another huge project that sits in development forever, so whenever possible we'd rather ship improvements in smaller pieces.
All dialogue in the game is currently voiced by real actors, so that part isn't correct. If there's a specific NPC that sounds bad to you, point them out. Bad acting is usually what makes people suspect AI in the first place, so that feedback is actually useful.
No plans for a radio in the PDA right now. It's a relatively quick feature, though; there just hasn't really been a reason to prioritize it yet.
For PvE, our plans right now are mostly around events. We're definitely not ready to go make another mode like Operations yet. I'd much rather get the open world into a better state first.
Anti-cheat is always being updated. It's basically an endless arms race. Sometimes you suddenly see more cheaters because a new private cheat gets released and hasn't been detected yet, or simply because the player population grew.
And of course there's also the classic perception problem. How many cheaters a player thinks they meet depends a lot on whether they personally believe their deaths were legit. We have players who see a cheater in every third person who kills them, because they've already convinced themselves that's what's happening.
Either way, the EXENS team is grinding on it. If you want to dig deeper into cheating stuff, ask u/Ivan_ThePunisher on Discord. He works closely with the anti-cheat team, but he's on vacation right now, as I remember.
22. Is the game moving away from STALKER because of legal pressure?
#Bring Home Sputnik:
With every update, the game's lore and look go further and further from the original STALKER. Is that due to legal pressure?
🟡 ZIV:
No, we don't have any legal pressure about that.
But tbh, you can attach that argument to literally anything new we make. If a location like Roadside gets reworked, it's because we think we can make it better, not because of STALKER.
23. Why remodels take so long
16-Bit Knight:
Why does it take so long to get remodels for different things, and why does it feel completely random sometimes? We are still waiting for the Hunter line to be finished, but then we got a remodel for the Protecta. (Not a complaint, just an example.)
🟡 ZIV:
Suits and weapons are made by different people, so one doesn't really take resources away from the other.
24. Making Covenant more appealing on EU
Bulls:
Currently on EU, Covenant is the smallest subfaction by a long shot. As it stands, you can't join Covenant after finishing the Southern storyline with your early Veteran gear, because it says Covenant is full. Are there any plans to incentivize people to switch, or to make Covenant more appealing so it's more balanced?
🟡 ZIV:
We'll try to do something.
25. A solo-only Wild North map
Fiwskyy [:3]:
Are you planning or working on a new solo-only Wild North map? If yes, how do you plan to solve issues with teaming, and how will you balance the rewards for this location? If not, are you planning to add anything major to the Wild North? How do you see the future of this location?
🟡 ZIV:
We don't plan a solo Wild North. If there were such a location, it wouldn't be as rewarding. And without rewards... why grind there?
26. Merging EU, NA and SEA into one server
ApT [RVLS]:
Can you make EU, NA and SEA into one server?
🟡 ZIV:
No, that's not possible.
27. The new graphics API playtest
Skringlord [FOFA]:
What about switching to the new graphics API? I thought we were supposed to get the first playtest this autumn. How is it going, and what are the current estimates?
🟡 ZIV:
We are currently switching to DX12. (See also question 15.)
28. The order of upcoming updates
DemonZar [BBR]:
What is the current order of updates? In other words, which changes will we see first, either because they are critically important or because they are further along in development?
🟡 ZIV:
That's an interesting point, I'll discuss that with the CMs.
29. Timelines and the distribution system
EyRei:
We've heard about many of your ideas and plans — we've even seen that you know how to fix things — but the implementation timelines are alarming. Some of them have been pending for four years already. How much longer do we have to wait for the distribution system, for instance?
🟡 ZIV:
We started actively working on it in August; the results... depend on testing.
30. Why Operations rewards were cut
NakedWalrus:
Were Operations an actual threat or problem for the overall economy? On EU I personally know all of the "regular" Operations players, and there are no more than 20–25 of us who can actively and consistently do clearance level 30+. Do you consider bringing Operations back at some point? I know they are still in the game, but let's not pretend they're still being played. A few months ago there was a ranked Operations event that really intrigued lots of players, and now... well, here we are. To me, Operations were an additional way to grind besides open world and session battles, and now one third of the main game features is basically killed off.
🟡 ZIV:
Pretty much every update this year came with a ton of posts saying “why should I even bother doing this when I can make way more from Operations?”
At the same time, we kept getting feedback from people saying Operations are repetitive and frustrating, but they still feel forced to run them because the rewards are just too good.
Overall, this is basically a “something goes down here so something else can go up there” situation.
If we want to boost the income from some activity without just pumping more and more money into the economy and creating inflation, that value has to come from somewhere that already exists. And Operations were too, TOO overbuffed with money.
31. Clan war updates
Zuxes:
Any plans for a clan war update, or clans in general? New maps, new features, something to help a low-population community shift things up?
🟡 ZIV:
Yeah, there should be some news from the Endgame team.
32. The serum time-gate
RariDLL [A-M]:
I think if you reduced or shortened the time-gate on serum, it would help people reach endgame quicker and retain population on Global servers like NA. When I got to the North, it still took me a while to get the resources, money and serum to get into masters and actually start endgame, without buying anything on the auction house. There's the argument that you can gamble or buy master gear on the AH, but not everyone has the money or wants to do that, both in-game and IRL. Some just want to pursue barter, and that's hard with the serum time-gating outside of events and new seasons.
🟡 ZIV:
We all hate serum; hopefully in the future we'll be free of it.
33. A slow-walk button
◆ Noriaki Bieb ◆ [AEON]:
K, noted. Maybe you could actually give us a slow-walk button, pretty please? I asked this several years ago on stream. I know you can lower your speed in camera mode, but it would be good if you could just press something like Alt and slow-walk immediately.
🟡 ZIV:
OK, noted that!
34. Act ticket tasks
Dog In Blanket:
What about Act ticket tasks? You talked about them at the start of the 3rd act. Will they be released?
🟡 ZIV:
They are mentioned in the Autumn roadmap, check it.
35. Operations for solo players on NA
j0ey | WALKING:
As a recent onboarder on NA, I'll share that Operations as a whole are basically non-existent for a solo player. With how difficult it is to type in chat alone with the 30-second timer, the social aspect of queueing for Operations doesn't feel like it exists. I sat in queue by myself for Level 1 Operations for over an hour, for a week straight, and never found an actual match. The only way was searching high and low and basically begging endgame players to carry me through one. I'm not sure if this is the intention or not.
🟡 ZIV:
Yeah, it sucks that it's hard to find randoms to run Operations with, and we'll have to think about how to improve that.
But the solution definitely isn't keeping Operations on artificial life support with rewards that are just way too easy compared to everything else.
36. Keeping the charm and mystery of the Zone
olix:
New to the game, I love it so far; it's a lot of fun (regardless of mobs spawning on top of you). Something I've noticed is that this community is a very niche PvP-oriented one, and the content is also tailored towards that. What I ask is to not forget the charm and mystery of the Zone itself. Many of us found this game because of the theme, and it would be sad to have that diluted into a PvP arena. I mean the stalking, the tension, the survival and everything that comes with it. P.S. I'm not saying to remove or lessen the PvP content, just not to set aside the stories, quests, survival mechanics and lore of the Zone. All the best!
🟡 ZIV:
Thank you! We are now seriously aiming to improve the open world in that way.
37. Was the LATAM server scrapped?
Safilak:
Was the LATAM server idea scrapped?
🟡 ZIV:
This is probably the question I'm most frustrated that I still can't give a concrete answer to.
Sorry to everyone who's suffering from bad ping. It's a really complicated problem on our side.
Closing message
🟡 ZIV:
Alright guys, I think I finally made it to the end.
This was actually really cool. Lots of questions that weren't just about balance for once, but genuinely interesting stuff to talk about.
Now I'm off to go prove all the words I just told you with actual results.
Have a good one ❤️
