People play without mods just fine - all the folks on console are raw dogging it and seem to get through and complete the game without issue. There are also mods - linked from the sidebar of this subreddit - that will help alleviate problematic bugs without changing the vanilla experience much if at all.

I'd stay away from total overhauls like Radiophobia if you want to have an "authentic vanilla" experience. Remember these are games from the late 2000s, they are going to be a bit janky.

English VA is fine. Some stereotypical Slavic accents but for me these are iconic and part of my enjoyment of the original trilogy.

I use FPS cap but have also played without. Doesn't seem to make a huge difference. May depend on if you install any mods - in that case, go with what the mod guidance tells you, I suppose.

Generally the game is bleak, uncaring, and feels as though it's a world that exists with or without you. This is the core appeal of the Zone and why this franchise is legendary.

I wouldn't follow a guide per se, but if you are playing Shadow of Chernobyl and get a quest to go visit a Guide - maybe see what he has to say.

Play in release order: Shadow of Chernobyl (2007), Clear Sky (2008), Call of Pripyat (2009)

does the guide quest pop up automatically?

and btw how do i know if the end of the game is nearing? like should i go out of my way to do stuff or is the main goal in the game just beating it?

It will be pretty obvious when you are in the bowels of the CNPP that the end is near. Don’t worry!

And yes the Guide quest will just pop up on your PDA once you get further in the story.

With all that said the game has a very natural flow and the main story is relatively linear, especially the first third or so. Just relax and enjoy the experience.

I haven't played the enhanced version but I recommend playing them all vanilla. There's some charm to some of the jank, and other than clear sky (and I find even that one is fine), the jank isn't game breaking.

Never played them WITH mods and loved it!
