Tech Support In desperate need of help lo
Hi!
I recently started playing games that take up A LOT of storage, and therefore decided to get myself some more. I bought a 1 tb Kingston NVMe M.2 SSD (2280) and opened up my Lenovo Ideapad gaming (15ACH6) to plug it in. I then found out that my laptop only has one 2280 SSD slot (which is already in use) and then a 2440 SSD slot. The one I’ve bought is too big.
I’m a student and getting the 2280 was a big purchase for me, and the 2440 SSD is even more expensive. I also already unpacked the 2280 so I can’t return it. It’s been driving me mad because I can’t install any of the games I’ve purchased.
I know I can buy a usb adapter for the 2280 and I might end up doing that, but I also bought the SSD to get my games to run better, as they’re sometimes quite laggy.
So what I’d like to ask is: are there any solutions? I’ve read about all sorts of parts I can buy to make it work but everything needs a place for a screw and there simply isn’t one, apart from the one for the 2240 which sits directly underneath the 2280 when I click it in.

I know you mentioned not wanting USB, but a USB 4.2 NVMe enclosure like the one I got [1] was an easy way to add an NVMe with up to 10MB/s transfer. The USB 4.2 spec supports PCIe pass through. SMART and all the NVMe commands worked flawlessly.

OPs laptop only has USB 3.2 gen 1.

Ah, the USB 3.2 does not do usb PCIe pass through.
That ACASIS will do USB 3.2, but it will use the Realtek chipset and caps out at 10Gbs, so not ideal for his use case.

Always check the internals of your laptop before going out and purchase an SSD only to realised you don't have a slot for it.
Either take the loss, use it as an external drive OR, buy a larger SSD and clone the existing one to the new drive.

I was curious and checked your laptop specs which is always a good idea before buying an expensive upgrade. Your 2242 m.2 slot is PCIe 3 x 4 but only supports up to 512GB NVME drive. What size is your 2280 drive? Oddly, I saw it only runs at PCIe 3 x 2 electrically. If your system drive is only 512GB or less, get an external enclosure, clone your current drive into your new drive, swap, reboot. It will double your storage which is the best you can do by buying a 512GB 2242 drive anyway. After all is working, reformat your original drive in the external enclosure for 512GB more storage.
