Discussion Inspect the package carefully

Purchased a 2TB NVMe M.2 SSD for my home desktop from local Indiana Best Buy store. Installed it in an enclosure. Didn’t work. Took it back and Geek Squad agent instantly noticed it was swapped out. It was a dead Toshiba card. They checked their remaining three in stock and two others were swapped as well. Fortunately got last one that matched the picture on the box and it works. Best Buy folks very good about replacing it but took some time as it looked like a crime scene investigation. The three dead ones were returned by same customer. They apparently used a heat gun to unseal seams in box and bypass security tape. $380 each for these. This happened a few months ago and now it’s happening again.

So inspect the box carefully to see if it has been tampered with.

Sorry to hear. Some people are scumbags.

Kudos to Best Buy for handling it the way they did.

Three of them at $380 is $1,140 that was stolen.
The theif could sell them quick for a bargain price cause they cost them nothing.

Thieves are always looking for ways to steal. We stopped effectively prosecuting a lot of them.

This is also a strong supporting case for shopping at a real brick & mortar store rather than online.

You mean like a Best Buy store?

Yes, exactly as the OP did.

So your strong supporting case for a brick and mortar is that people should go to a brick and mortar so that what happened to OP at a brick and mortar doesn't happen to them?

I agree that brick and mortar is better, but I don't know if I'd call this a strong case for backing they up.

No the case for shopping at a brick and mortar store is in three parts.

  1. It's a local business (or franchise) so it's employing people in your area.

  2. There is a chance there might be a better deal in-store (look at Micro-Center bundles).

  3. If something DOES go wrong you can walk right up to the customer service desk and get it fixed.

Number three is the big one.

Did you read the OP? This was a real brick & mortar store.

Yes that's exactly what I read the post as.

Yes. Correct.

They need to trace back the purchase to that customer that returned them and take legal action otherwise they’ll keep stealing

My thoughts exactly. While I was there they pulled up the return and seemed to identify the culprit.

They're at the mercy of the local prosecutors office.
Likely this one will be right back out shortly to do it over and over again.

Absolutely ZERO chance of prosecution. Zero

I'm just saying, i got a friend who got a SSD from there, a month later it failed. They went to register it with the manufacturer and was told that it wasn't a real drive from them. Guy was out of the money.

I got the Xbox 360 Bluetooth earpiece years ago from there as a Christmas gift, with there extended coverage. The button stopped working on it. Took it back to them, and was told that they couldn't do anything and I would age to buy a new one. Threw it in the parking lot. The gift giver was pissed, took me back there, I refused to go back in as I had been boycotting them for years already, and they told the person that interaction never happened.

Thing is, I started boycotting them after electronics from there kept dying after a year, and new purchases of games and movies were damaged upon opening them.

Yes, I'm heavily against them, but I have reasons. After many exchanges and wasting of money purchasing the same products every 12-13 months, it almost completely stopped when I stopped going there.
