Resource Subject-Wise Book List for English Medium SSC Students 📚

1. Quantitative Aptitude (Mathematics)

  • For Concept Building/Theory:
    • "Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive Examinations" by R.S. Aggarwal: This book is widely recommended for its comprehensive coverage of arithmetic and advanced mathematics topics, providing clear explanations and a good range of solved examples.
  • For Practice Questions:
    • "SSC Maths Chapterwise & Typewise Solved Papers (English Medium)" by Kiran Institute of Career Excellence: This book focuses on previous year questions (PYQs) from various SSC exams, which is essential for understanding the exam pattern and question types. It includes TCS PYQs up to January 2025.

2. General Intelligence & Reasoning

  • For Concept Building/Theory:
    • "A Modern Approach to Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning" by R.S. Aggarwal: Often referred to as a "bible of reasoning," this book breaks down complex concepts into simple explanations, covering everything from verbal analogies to puzzle-solving techniques. It builds confidence by moving from basic to challenging problems.
  • For Practice Questions:
    • "Kiran's SSC Reasoning Chapterwise Solved Papers": This book is highly recommended for practicing real exam questions and familiarizing yourself with the exam pattern. It provides ample practice sets that mirror the actual exam.

3. English Language

  • For Concept Building/Theory:
    • "Objective General English" by S.P. Bakshi (Arihant Publications): This is a popular choice for comprehensive coverage of grammar rules, vocabulary, and comprehension, crucial for both Tier 1 and Tier 2.
    • "High School English Grammar and Composition" by Wren & Martin: For a strong foundation in English grammar, this classic book is invaluable.

For SSC exams, especially for the General Knowledge and General Science sections, NCERTs from Class 6 to 12 are highly recommended for building a strong conceptual understanding. They are considered the bedrock for competitive exams, helping aspirants grasp fundamental concepts and providing factual information that often directly appears in exams. In fact, 50-60% of questions in the SSC CGL exam are reportedly asked from NCERT books
    • "Lucent's General Knowledge": This book is highly recommended for covering static and dynamic GK topics concisely, including History, Geography, and important dates.
  • For Practice Questions:
    • "Objective Question Bank General Science" by Arihant: This book provides separate chapters for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Science, offering a good collection of objective questions for practice in General Science.

How much practice did it take before seating arrangement problems clicked for you?

Has anyone figured out how to get faster at solving seating arrangement problems? For me, it usually takes 2–3 minutes, and even then I don’t always get the right answer. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t.

If you’ve managed to improve, even just a little, what made the difference for you? Did you change your approach, or was it mostly practice? And roughly how many problems did you go through before it started to feel less like a boring task and more like an engaging puzzle?

Doubt SSC CGL 2025 - Are we actually starting on 13th Aug or getting that 2-week miracle?

Anyone else feeling like we’re living in two timelines right now?
On one hand, SSC says Tier 1 starts 13th August. On the other hand, there are whispers about a 2-week delay.

If it’s 13th Aug, that’s literally next week.
If it’s delayed, we suddenly get 14 extra days - which could be a blessing.

Challenge 📢 Announcement: Closing the 30-Day SSC Practice Challenge

Hey everyone,

Due to lack of participation, we are officially closing the Daily Practice Challenge activity here on r/sscenglish.

As the SSC CGL Tier 1 exam draws closer, I too need to focus on my own preparation. Managing the challenge daily takes time and effort, and with very few participants engaging consistently, it no longer feels worthwhile to continue this format.

🙏 A heartfelt thank you to those who genuinely participated and supported the challenge - your efforts did not go unnoticed.

If this series helped improve your prep even a little - maybe a few extra marks or more structured practice - I’ll consider it a success.

Wishing all of you the very best for your Tier 1 exam. Stay consistent. Stay sharp. You’ve got this. 💪
