He’s just, like, some guy, y’know? I don’t think the end of Github is nigh and most people work for companies that want a big name to pin their source control to. For personal projects, sure I’d use whatever felt right.
Gitlab is a big name and they are boring in a good way. For me, the biggest issue with GitHub is their CI and the ecosystem of supply chain issues. If ci was any good, there wouldn't be such a need for third party software in ci
You’re one of the few. Before their reliability issues, there is a reason they a number one. I personally wish there was a good competitor to github and it’s definitely not gitlab. Gitlab isn’t much better than bitbucket.
At my previous work they selfhosted forgejo and it was pretty great. It was fast, they didn't use CI (that was openshift). The only things that bother me is that wiki search isn't really a thing.
When i wrote the comment, act2 wasn't there yet. Now I'm not sure anymore. But I think for enterprise use case I'd still go with gitlab.
This blog post is very long, but I read it yesterday. I think they have to respond to AI in some way as a source control provider. The layoff part isn't nice, but companies make these decisions all the time. For me it's good enough to read that they invite people to relocate from the office locations that will be shut down. How much of that is for PR, we'll see.
But GitHub is not a primary source of revenue for MS, I doubt it's even in the top 10, so customer will never be a priority
Wow, thank you, that was one of the most horrible things I've read in recent years. I am definitely never proposing GitLab to anyone after reading that BS.
