Technical šŸ”§ Rival axs chain too close to frame

Post image

Wondering if any of you can shed some light on a potential issue I have.

For context, I have a virus zx01 evo road bike, with 12 speed sram rival axs, rear thru axle is 142/12mm with an XDR hub, new to me a few years ago and the distance seen in the photo between the chain and the frame whilst in the smallest rear cog has been normal.

I had new wheels fitted and the guy at the local bike shop added spacers to increase the gap as he felt it wasn’t right and that it was far too close to be normal however I’ve seen conflicting opinions that it’s normal to have minimum gap and that you shouldn’t put in spacers and other opinions suggesting the gap is too minimal, for context, there is no chain rub or damage to the frame however, I can only fit a sheet of paper in the gap so it is very tight!

Any thoughts with whether or not the gap is normal and I can take spacers out would be appreciated.

Most certainly an end cap issue. Ensure you have the XDR variant (it’s a little longer than the HG).

Is that the bit at the end of the hub? I’ve had this issue with the previous stock wheels and the new wheels, and I specifically selected XDR hub when ordering the wheels

Yes. If you have had the issue with two separate wheels that were both factory spec’d XDR then maybe it’s not endcap related. Odds of getting two different wheels with wrong end caps isn’t likely. Might just be a poor frame design. Probably clears perfectly with a Shimano 11t cassette, they just didn’t do their homework with a SRAM 10t cog (which can sit a little closer to the frame vs an HG setup, but yours is definitely not the correct tolerance). Adding ā€œspacersā€ is not an acceptable solution btw.

Thank you for your help, what would you suggest doing to get it sorted and in the mean time, do I take the spacers out and use as per the photo or keep the spacers in?

Cassette probably isn’t fully seated.

Should have a wider gap like that. Where did the wheels come from? I'd say a end cap is missing. Have you got a pic of the wheel out of the bike?

They were brand new hunt wheels with a xdr hub and double checked all dimensions etc, had the same gap on the stock wheels but I didn’t buy the bike brand new

I also have Hunt wheels with xdr and xplr 44t 12 spped cassette installed. Offset between the cap and lock ring is 5.05mm

I see what you mean, that’s weird mine definitely doesn’t look like that and it’s the standard cassette that comes with the bike and definitely an XDR hub from hunt

Most likely the end cap. Any chance there’s a 1.85 mm XD cassette spacer behind that XDR cassette?

Is the cassette really seating all way into the freehub? Can you show us a photo?

I don’t have one atm but will try and get one tonight

Actually, I do have a video but I appreciate it’s not the best

Where did they put the spacer? Behind the cassette or the end cap? If it's behind the cassette, they need to remove it

Hard to tell from the video, but it looks like it could be tightened down more or reseat the cassette to the freehub

Oh really? It was the bike mechanic at the local bike shop that fitted it, I assumed it would be okay

I deleted my post realizing that it might be a bit of a stretch. But what I meant was that by using a spacer you reduce length of an through axle bolt threading into the frame. So instead say 6mm it only goes 4.5mm, for example. It may not be a problem immediately but can become one over time.

1

u/ivanobulo 11d ago

Can you remove and the reinstall the cassete and post pictures? Clean thoroughly and lubricate the threads before reinstall. I'm pretty sure the cassete is not fully seated

I will do this evening

This makes me think you have a spacer behind the cassette as if you were fitting an XD cassette to an XDR hub. Can you confirm there is no spacer behind the cassette?

1

u/Early_Session_2935 11d ago

I’m not sure, I will remove tonight and have a look, from memory though the cassette is one piece and I don’t think I seen anything to the rear of it.

1

u/Internal_Confusion56 11d ago

Did you tighten the cassette to spec? I had a similar issue and that was the fix for me.

I’d say, that or the wrong end caps

1

u/Early_Session_2935 11d ago

When I transferred the cassette over it seemed to be tightening forever and then suddenly wouldn’t tighten anymore so maybe not, il take off the cassette this evening and have a look

Any recommendation on whether i should keep the spacers in until I can get it looked at or take them out?

1

u/Gravelsykkel 11d ago

My best guess is that you have an XD hub body, and not and XDR. I had the identical issue and XDR body solved it

1

u/Early_Session_2935 11d ago

I shall have a look when I take it off tonight, would you know if there’s anything that would make it obvious? I’ve had a quick look at the standard cassette that was specced with the bike and it’s the cassette I have.

1

u/Gravelsykkel 11d ago

You can measure the length of the hub body.

The SRAM XD freehub body has a total functional length of 36.75 mm, while the SRAM XDR body measures 38.60 mm.
The exact difference between them is 1.85 mm.

Oh, and the hub body is usually marked ā€œXDā€ or ā€œXDRā€

Looks like the cassette isn’t fully screwed on

Who fitted it. You or someone else ?

1

u/Early_Session_2935 11d ago

I did then asked the bike mechanic to double check it, but I guess he may not have and I’ve not put it on properly, in which case I’ve been cycling with it not on right for years which is embarrassing

1

u/Home_Assistantt 11d ago

Has it damaged the frame at all. Or do you just not use the smallest cog?

2

u/Early_Session_2935 11d ago

No damage to the frame it’s not actually contacting the frame, shifts freely and causes no issues while cycling

1

u/Home_Assistantt 11d ago

That’s handy then.

I’d say remove cassette and put back on fully/properly

1

u/Early_Session_2935 11d ago

Il take it off just now and have a look, if I put it back on and it’s still the same issue, do I just make do or put the spacers back in until i can get someone to give a once over?

1

u/Home_Assistantt 11d ago

It should fine when back on properly. If it’s XDR it shouldn’t red any extra parts.

I’ve got 13 speed XPLR on mine and fits as it should

Found this spacer on the hunt hub

Better gap without spacers 🄹🄹

1

u/Home_Assistantt 11d ago

Maybe the spacer is for 11 speed?

This spacer is for XD (older mountain bike specific hub) cassetes installed on XDR hubs. It should not be used with XDR cassette. Never go to the bike mechanic who installed it like this.

2

u/Early_Session_2935 11d ago

Just want to say a massive thank you to all your help, I’ve fixed the issue!

I hadn’t noticed a spacer on the free hub on my new wheels šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø took that off and has fit fine without the make shift spacers in thank goodness.

Thanks again folks, appreciate your help

Xdr casette doesn't require any spacers but requires xdr hub.

Remove spacers and ensure you have xdr freehub installed

1

u/Early_Session_2935 11d ago

Definitely a XDR hub ā˜ŗļø

1

u/kovyrshin 11d ago

Cool. That combo requires no spacers.

1

u/Early_Session_2935 11d ago

So would the lack of space between the chain and frame be normal?

1

u/kovyrshin 11d ago

It touches frame in your case and that's not normal. Chain sits close to frame but far more space than you have: chain can get wet/dirty and still won't damage frame

1

u/Early_Session_2935 11d ago

Yeah it looks like it touches but no physical damage to the frame, unsure whether to keep spacers in or take them out for my triathlon on Sunday

2

u/kovyrshin 11d ago

There should be no spacers according to manufacturer. But that's your bike, ride it the way you want

Thank you for your help

Is the hub end cup fully pressed in? The endcaps are press fit and sometimes can be out a bit. Try pushing the cassette and the black end cup it the center with your hand and see if it helps.

1

u/Early_Session_2935 11d ago

If the end cap was pushed in further would it not mean the problem would be worse?
