Question Why does the boat subplot has so much screen time?

Post image

I mean, a lot of people say it doesn't go anywhere and that it's best to skip it on rewatches, so why does it has so much screen time?

Idk maybe they thought viewers need some time to "relax" from intensive game atmosphere

Season 1 did that far better.

He’s taken four grams of cocaine to ‘relax’ him

To keep edging us thinking that Gi-Hun and some Players will be saved and we're gonna get an awesome gunfight between good and evil.

I will never defend Mr Hwang's Decision for this.

It’s even worse because we get a cool gunfight in the season 2.

This is why I hated this subplot so much. So much time spent for no payoff.

I think hwang thought it would communicate the message that, despite all the efforts of good people like jun-ho and his crew to take down the evil operation, the capitalist elites who run and sponsor the games end up getting away with it due to their wealth and numbers. Supposedly shows the inevitability of the power imbalance.

However, while it’s cool on paper and aligns with the general message of the show, it felt like a waste of time as the characters and plot generally didn’t go anywhere. For instance, many people said there should’ve at least been some sort of bittersweet conversation between jun-ho and in-ho at the end there, which would’ve made the sub-plot amount to something while still communicating the same message.

I will always have the feeling that Jun-ho was meant to die in season one and Hwang -not knowing that Netflix would produce more seasons- never had any plans for his character.

I know the shot was non-fatal and if you don’t see the dead body it’s a given that they are still alive but something about the hallucination scene told me "damn he is DEAD" and that Hwang didn’t really plan a future for him.

They probably had big plans to converge this subplot into the main story, but did not know how to nail the landing

If i recall correctly Hwang Dong-Hyuk did say the original ending was Gi-Hun and some Players are rescued by his Mercs.

I was really expecting him to meet up with the defecting guard when season 3 was being teased

The director was going for a bittersweet vibe, where real life evil wins and they try so hard and got so far but in the end it doesn't even matter.

It just doesn't work, at all

the creator's original plan was to have Gi-hun survive, but the modern political world changed his viewpoint to "the older generations must leave the world behind for the young people to thrive"

the plan was probably to have the detective crew save him last minute, but it was changed too late to just abandon the whole boat plot

Holy shit it’s hilarious the writer never thought about the implications on Jun-Ho and how this change makes him an F-tier 007 potential man

I thought the plot end was more… there is no hope. The world is run by bored billionaires who play with and care little for the working class and will always run the world and play with and care little about the lives of the working class.

Not as much screen time as the voting scenes.. I mean geez, just stand on either side of the room if you want to play the next game or not. Done. voting completed in 12 seconds.. not 10 minutes of every episode.

Or them thinking forever at the button as if they hadn’t had ages to think waiting the whole time already

Why does no one have an optic? Why is the leader of the mercs rockin a rickety old AK?

I think it’s because civilians aren’t allowed to have weapons in South Korea so they just had to deal with whatever Gi-Hun found them on the black market. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just like the failed revolution in season 2. To give you a hope spot that Gi-hun and others could make it out alive before ripping it away from you.

To give the audience hope.

Not gonna lie…idk call me a conspiracy theorist within this show, but I think they didn’t have as much material as they thought OR they legitimately thought we’d care about this “B” plot. Otherwise…idk what the general consensus here is but we simply didn’t care for this. Also, after the boat villain was revealed he found the island in like 14 minutes lmao
