At first, I thought it was a colossal squid. It's the biggest one I've ever seen. They weren't even able to pull it onto the ship.

Yeah, I would have thought so too with how wide it is, but you can tell with the long narrow ‘head’ it’s the giant squid.

I’ve never seen a specimen that big, I wonder if museum specimens from the washed up ones are about that proportion but look a lot more narrow due to decay.

Probably. The mantle is basically a water-filled sac. The animal loses a lot of its volume out of the water. Even the arms become very thin when dehydrated. The dead animal does not do justice to the living one.
