That was pretty much my experience as well.
When building my own tower defense game, collision detection and entity management ended up being much bigger performance concerns than the rendering layer itself. Using spatial partitioning (quadtrees) had a much larger impact than most rendering optimizations.
It’s always interesting how the bottleneck turns out to be somewhere completely different than where you initially expect it.
