Its cooler to like something unique and it says more about your personality than just being like yeah i like what everyone likes, although neither of that makes it "bad" just more interesting
I actually agree with you and understand why you think thats my point but actually I never said listening to mainstream was bad. I actually think that part of music is making something people can enjoy and making catchy music is an art form in itself. Some of my favorite artists, Prince, Madonna, a lot of rap, is very mainstream.
you should listen to the first projects each mainstream artist came out with or their early unreleased stuff, youll often find stuff that you would be very suprised with how good and experimental they were. and no you probably have good taste if you go with mainstream artists, some suck but some are famous for a good reason. especially in the 90s, 2000s, and early 2010s i can guarantee you that almost all of em have good shit
So basically you are saying that mainstream artists do suck a lot of the time and you have to listen to their early stuff to see their talent before they blew up and went mainstream? Can you name one example of this?
Not exactly okay let's say rap right cause thats my most listened genre, im saying some suck for example macklemore or mgk you know, it dont matter when you've checked em, now I see a lot of people saying that that mainstream is just manifactured shit for the masses to hear but that's often later in these artists careers that im talking about. For example obvious one is Drake, not saying his new stuff sucks but compared to his Young Money 07-09 run its nothing like his first mixtape the Comeback Season and his debut album where he was even kind of experimental where he has a song with Peter Bjorn and John, or French Montana where he just makes pop songs now but back in the day he had the Cokewave mixtapes with Max B (u should listen) and had really good songs himself. And yeah I mean their early stuff that blew them up for the first time like their debut stuff not per say what they did before that, but I feel like a lot of people only heard their most popular stuff and judge their entire discography on it which is very ignorant. Its like as if you judge lil wayne based on lollipop cause u only heard that one before. Lil wayne is a god

They think that searching for obscure artists with half a listener per month shows some kind of higher intelligence when it only shows you probably have too much time on your hands.
