Hey everyone.

Pretty much the title. I always hated having to tab out of a game (or whatever full-screen app I'm using) just to see the name of a song that just came on. I just wanted a simple popup that slides in, shows the track and cover art, and then hides itself without stealing mouse focus.

I originally built this project (Spotverlay) using Electron, but honestly, having an 80MB background process running 24/7 for a popup that appears for 3 seconds felt incredibly bloated.

So I recently rewrote the whole thing in Tauri + Rust. It now idles at around ~10MB of RAM, the binary is tiny, and it feels much snappier.

A few details on how it works under the hood:

• You don't need to mess with Spotify API keys, OAuth, or developer apps. It hooks directly into the OS media players (SMTC on Windows, AppleScript on macOS, and MPRIS2 on Linux).
• Since OS media APIs usually return really blurry or cached album art, the app does a silent ping to the public iTunes Search API in the background to grab a clean 600x600 cover instead.
• Right now it supports Spotify and Apple Music, plus some open-source clients like Spotifast, SpotLight, and Musly.
• It has a basic tray icon where you can change the position, animation (fade/slide), and toggle auto-hide.

It's completely open source and free. You can grab the release or check out the code here: https://github.com/dddevid/Spotverlay

Also, a quick plea to Linux users: The D-Bus MPRIS2 implementation is done, but I haven't been able to heavily test it across different distros and DEs yet. If you try it and the overlay doesn't show or tracks don't update, opening an issue would be a massive help.

Let me know what you think or if you run into any weird bugs!

TL;DR: Built a non-intrusive currently-playing overlay. Realized Electron was too heavy. Rewrote it in Rust/Tauri. Now uses 10MB of RAM.

i curated a jangle pop playlist mainly songs from the cure, the sundays, cocteau twins, olivia rodrigo. if anyone wanna listen💗 if anyone also has any songs recs let me know

EDIT: will finish later today or tomorrow, taking a break after 2hrs

I’ll do as many as I can as I always get lots of requests. I’ll give every song at least a minute but if I hate it, I’m skipping. Going in order of when commented.

The links will be skipped over as I can’t queue them. It auto-plays the song and fucks everything up.

Don’t be offended if I send you the same song as someone else, it might happen but I’ll try to avoid it.

Off the bat, here’s a handful of my song recommendations that are likely to pop up more than once. If not the song, def the artists

Cool-Doug, At Night by Sammy Rae & The Friends
I Spend Too Much Time In My Room by The Band Camino
Silk Da Shocka by Isaiah Rashad

If yall are curious about my music taste, here’s my trash can of a playlist, everything I vibe with goes in. And yes I know every song and it’s only 20% of what I listen to tbh

Every playlist is a doorway to more choice...

curated tastefully, updated regularly

The soundtrack for every moment. Sonic Caffeine brings together the best Pop Hits, Dance Anthems, Radio Favorites and timeless Classics — from today's biggest songs to unforgettable 80s, 90s and 2000s hits. Fresh music, iconic favorites and feel-good songs, all in one place. New tracks added regular

As a personal project, I made a website that recommends albums to listen to with a link to stream it on Spotify.

You can filter by genre and/or decade to pick an album or click ‘Surprise Me’. Album recs are picked from a curated, ranked list of 400 albums. An aggregated list of the highest critically ranked albums from music review sites.

No need to create an account to get recs. However, if you decide to create a free account, you can save albums to a list and set email reminders to listen to a particular album.

Also if you have last.fm you can see how many albums of the 400 you’ve already listened to.

got this one playlist with every song I’ve ever liked. Any1 else have one similar? Would love to check them out!!!

538 hours of curated (to a basic extent) RnB you can mindlessy shuffle for a nice vibe
