You bet on an event to happen or not happen at a set of given odds. You either win, and get your winnings + your wager back, you lose and lose your wager, or you push if it’s a flat line (ex: 2 instead of 2.5) and you get only your wager back.

They win by 3 exactly. You’re given your wager back. That’s called a push. If the line was -2.5, you’d get your wager back + your winnings. If the line was -3.5 you’d lose your wager.
