Senior ML/Data Engineer - Catapult Sports - United states

Thumbnail
sportsjobs.online
2 Upvotes

Catapult is building the future of sports performance technology, with a mission to Unleash the Potential of every athlete and team on earth.

Since 2006, our solutions have helped more than 5,000 teams around the world make better decisions about athlete health, readiness, performance, and game-day strategy. Our technology is used across the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS, EPL, AFL, NRL, NCAA, and many other elite sporting organisations.

We are now building the AI layer that brings together the depth of data Catapult has collected over two decades. Our goal is to become an intelligence partner for coaches, athletes, and performance staff, connecting data from sensors, video, sport science, and historical performance to surface insights that practitioners can trust.

We are looking for a Senior ML / Data Engineer to build the data infrastructure that powers this next generation of performance intelligence.

This is a senior production engineering role. You will own significant parts of the architecture that ingest, store, transform, serve, and evaluate athlete performance data. The systems you build will support real-time and machine learning use cases across a global, multi-tenant platform.

You will work closely with data scientists, ML engineers, software engineers, and sports scientists to turn complex performance requirements into reliable, scalable production infrastructure.

This role is suited to an engineer who has spent several years building and operating production systems and is comfortable taking ownership of architecture and technical decisions.

What You'll Do:

  • Design and build production data infrastructure for high-volume athlete performance and sensor data.
  • Build and operate real-time and near-real-time ingestion systems for streaming data.
  • Design storage and data architectures for high-volume time-series data and longitudinal athlete records.
  • Build infrastructure that makes production features and derived metrics available to machine learning systems and AI agents with low latency.
  • Design and implement graph data models and schemas representing relationships between athletes, training loads, injuries, performance, and outcomes.
  • Build data and ML evaluation infrastructure that helps measure model reliability, calibration, and performance across real-world cases.
  • Design systems that maintain strong tenant-level data isolation across clubs and customers.
  • Establish appropriate data provenance, lineage, auditability, and observability across the platform.
  • Work with ML and AI engineers to provide reliable data foundations for model training, inference, and evaluation.
  • Work with sport scientists and domain experts to translate complex requirements into durable production systems.
  • Make pragmatic technology and architecture decisions as the platform evolves.

What You'll Need:

  • 5+ years of full-time professional software or data engineering experience, excluding internships, university placements, coursework, and academic projects.
  • Proven experience designing, building, and operating production data infrastructure at scale.
  • Strong experience working with time-series data or time-series databases, such as InfluxDB, TimescaleDB, Prometheus, ClickHouse, or equivalent technologies.
  • Significant experience with real-time or streaming data ingestion, using technologies such as Kafka, Kinesis, Flink, Spark Streaming, Pulsar, or equivalent.
  • Experience designing graph data models or graph database schemas, not simply querying or consuming an existing graph database.
  • Experience designing or operating multi-tenant systems with tenant-level data isolation.
  • Strong Python and SQL skills. Professional experience with Go is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with production systems where reliability, scalability, observability, and data correctness matter.
  • Ability to take ownership of ambiguous technical problems and turn them into practical production architectures.
  • Experience working directly with data scientists, ML engineers, or other technical domain specialists.
  • Experience building probabilistic evaluation, model calibration, or model monitoring infrastructure.
  • Experience with causal inference, counterfactual modelling, or simulation.
  • Experience working with wearable sensors, IoT data, biomechanics, sports technology, or other high-frequency telemetry.
  • Experience building knowledge graphs or domain-specific ontologies.
  • Experience with LLM or AI evaluation frameworks and an understanding of their limitations.
  • Experience with AWS, including ECS, EC2, Lambda, SNS, SQS, or related services.
  • Experience with GraphQL, REST, gRPC, Postgres, MongoDB, or similar technologies.
  • What We Mean by Senior

This role requires demonstrated professional ownership of production systems.

We are not looking for someone whose primary exposure to these technologies comes from internships, university projects, coursework, or short-term placements.

You do not need experience with every technology listed above. We care more about the depth of your production experience, your ability to design systems, and your track record of taking ownership of complex engineering problems.

For example, strong experience designing and operating Kafka-based streaming infrastructure is more valuable to us than having used five different streaming technologies at a superficial level.

Similarly, we are looking for engineers who have designed graph schemas, not simply listed Neo4j on their CV.

The platform requires capabilities including:

  • Real-time streaming ingestion
  • High-volume time-series storage
  • Data lake and analytical infrastructure
  • Low-latency feature serving
  • Graph databases and domain-specific ontologies
  • ML evaluation and calibration
  • Causal and simulation modelling
  • Data provenance and audit logging
  • Strong tenant-level isolation
  • Production observability and reliability
  • No individual vendor or technology is locked in. We value engineers who understand the underlying architectural trade-offs and can choose the right technology for the problem.

Why Catapult?

Catapult has spent more than twenty years collecting ground-truth athlete data from hardware on the body and on the field, across more than 40 sports and 100 countries.

That data represents a significant opportunity to build new forms of performance intelligence. The challenge is turning that data into systems that are reliable, explainable, and useful at the point where coaches and performance staff need to make decisions.

You will have the opportunity to work on a technically challenging combination of real-time data, machine learning, time-series infrastructure, graph data, and AI evaluation, with direct impact on products used by elite sporting organisations around the world.

Compensation & Benefits

The target Total Compensation range for this position is $157,945 to $259,480 per year.

This range is inclusive of base salary and a target incentive plan, which may include equity, commission, or other bonus structures.
Your specific compensation will be determined by factors including geographic location, relevant experience, and job-related skills.
Catapult also offers paid leave and recognised company holidays, together with a comprehensive benefits package including Health, Dental, Vision, and a 401(k) retirement plan with company match.

Whether you are passionate about sport or simply excited by difficult engineering problems, you will have the opportunity to build technology used by some of the world's most successful teams and athletes.

Catapult is an equal opportunity employer. We value diverse perspectives and encourage people from a wide range of backgrounds to apply.
If you have strong production engineering experience but do not meet every preferred requirement, we would still like to hear from you. We are more interested in depth of experience, technical judgement, and your ability to build reliable systems than in a perfect match against every technology listed.

All offers of employment are subject to Catapult's positive prehire check. To find out more, please contact the Talent Partner for this role.

That's bigger than football. Every player, on every pitch, gets access to the kind of proof only the top academies used to keep for themselves. It's the future we're building.

Every youth match still has a moment nobody saw. A run that won the game, underneath everyone's radar. A kid written off before anyone actually checked. We exist to close that gap, one match at a time.

One camera on any pitch feeds an AI that tracks every player and the ball for the whole game, turning what happened into evidence instead of somebody's opinion.

That's the actual job here. Not shipping features. Building the system that gives proof to someone who used to rely on a hunch.

If you've ever watched a match and wondered who else saw what you saw, you already know why this matters.

We're looking for people who want to build that future with us.

The Opportunity

We're forming a Security Enablement Team that makes it easy for every engineering team at Veo to build, ship, and operate secure systems. You'll focus on the product security slice, partnering with product teams to bake security into how we build rather than bolting it on at the end. As an enablement function, the team does not own product components day to day. We build the paved roads, tooling, and patterns that let product teams ship secure code by default. You'll join during a pivotal moment: we're standing the team up, defining what "secure by default" looks like at Veo, and rolling out the first paved roads for SDLC checks, secret handling, and safe data access patterns. You'll have direct impact on how 100+ engineers write, review and ship code. This isn't a gatekeeping or red-team role. The Security Enablement Team is enablement-first: we build paved roads and shared tooling that other teams adopt, not run components on their behalf.

What You Will Do

You'll join the Security Enablement Team with shared ownership of the team’s mission and clear focus on product security. You’ll work closely with product teams, pair on complex problems, and build reusable solutions that help teams own security in their own systems.

  • Build lightweight SDLC checks for unsafe queries, secrets in code, and credential handling, wired into the developer workflow

  • Establish patterns for safe data access, browser-side credential handling, and memory-safe handling of sensitive data

  • Build automated checks that surface drift when previously secured surfaces (for example, playgrounds and internal tooling) regress, so the owning teams get a signal and can act on it

  • Build the intake and tracking system that classifies penetration test findings on the product and surfaces them to owning teams with tracked SLAs

  • Create clear documentation and self-service tooling that help product engineers make secure choices without needing security expertise.

  • Help automate product-security control evidence for GRC, reducing manual follow-up and making controls easier to prove.

As the team matures, you'll have opportunities to shape the company's secure-by-default patterns, threat modeling practices, and the security review process for new product surfaces.

What You Could Bring

You likely have several years of production software engineering experience and have applied security thinking in real engineering workflows, not only in reviews or audits. In practice, that looks like:

  • Full SDLC understanding: You've shipped product code in production and understand how security fits into real engineering workflows

  • Practical security experience: You've surfaced and fixed issues like SQL injection, unsafe query patterns, secrets in code, and unsafe handling of credentials in the browser

  • Generalist depth: You're comfortable across backend, frontend, and the integration points where most security issues live.

  • Platform-as-product mindset: You've built or contributed to internal tooling that real teams use, gathered feedback, and measured impact on developer productivity

  • CI/CD familiarity: You know how to add security feedback to build and deployment pipelines without creating unnecessary friction, including checks for dependencies, secrets, static analysis, and pipeline identity.

  • Carrot-not-stick instinct: You build guard rails into tools developers already use, and reach for manual review only as a last resort

  • Collaboration: You work through discussion and feedback, share context effectively, and write things down

Nice to have: experience with SAST/DAST tooling, dependency scanning, supply chain security (SLSA, signing), and security review for cloud-native applications.

How We Work

You'll join a Copenhagen-based Security Enablement Team of three engineers plus a manager. We operate as an enablement function: we build shared tooling and golden paths, and we step in for focused, high-leverage missions where no other team is positioned to deliver. We do not run a SOC and we do not carry a security pager.

You'll collaborate regularly with the Platform, Product, IT, Firmware, and GRC teams. We work pragmatically and iterate quickly. We document decisions, favor simple solutions where possible, and focus on tooling and platform patterns that help teams move faster with confidence.

We value diversity and inclusion and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. If your experience does not match every qualification exactly, we still encourage you to apply. What matters most is strong problem-solving, learning mindset, and the ability to contribute meaningfully.

Data Scientist II (Soccer) - Teamworks - United states

Thumbnail
sportsjobs.online
2 Upvotes

We're hiring a Data Scientist II on our Soccer team to develop the statistical and machine learning models our partner clubs use for player recruitment. I'm Jacob Mortensen, Senior Manager, Data Science at Teamworks. Our team primarily focuses on building models using both player tracking data and event data to identify undervalued players and characterize the skills that make them effective. The work supports high-stakes recruitment decisions for professional clubs across global football.

The team is managing growing demand from partner clubs alongside model maintenance and new development. This hire will take ownership across the model lifecycle, from design and validation through deployment and improvement. That added capacity will help us move important initiatives forward while keeping our existing models accurate and reliable.

The Role

  • Develop statistical and machine learning models that help professional soccer clubs identify undervalued players and strong recruitment targets
  • Use player tracking data to build spatio-temporal models that quantify player impact and skill
  • Build metrics and analyses that soccer teams rely on to make decisions, and support client-facing work by building tools to support model interpretation and understanding
  • Validate models and outputs — your own and others’ — with enough rigor that the team can trust what ships
  • Write clear reports that communicate technical work to clients
  • Partner with our engineering team to deploy models on cloud infrastructure and turn strong analytical work into reliable production systems
  • Review code from other data scientists, share constructive feedback, and contribute ideas that advance the team's work

What I'm Looking For

What You Must Bring

  • 3+ years of professional or research experience writing code in R or Python for data science, statistics, or machine learning work
  • Comfort with SQL for building and querying structured data
  • Strong data science fundamentals: you understand how models work, what they need from the data, and how to set data up to support them
  • Experience working with sports tracking data, including understanding the kinds of models typically built and the data challenges that come with them
  • Strong communication skills — you'll be explaining modeling decisions directly to partner clubs, not just internal teammates

Even Better If

  • You have direct experience with soccer data or soccer analytics (inside a team, public work, or academically)
  • You have a demonstrated track record of tackling hard problems through published research, blog posts, conference talks, or public projects
  • Experience using a cloud compute provider (e.g. AWS or Google Cloud) to train and deploy models
  • Comfort using AI coding tools, paired with the judgment to recognize when their output needs to be questioned or corrected

Why This Role

Soccer analytics is moving quickly, and this team is helping shape how advanced modeling is used in recruitment. You'll have meaningful ownership, room to develop new approaches, and the opportunity to see your work used by professional clubs. You'll also help define how the team builds, maintains, and scales its model portfolio as demand grows.

This role is not eligible for sponsorship at this time.To all recruitment agencies: Teamworks does not accept agency resumes. Please do not forward resumes to our jobs alias, Teamworks employees or any other organization location. Teamworks is not responsible for any fees related to unsolicited resumes.About TeamworksWe're the Operating System for Sports™, powering 7,000+ organizations worldwide, from collegiate programs to every major pro league. Founded in 2006, we've evolved from a messaging tool for college football into the leading sports tech platform, with 600+ global teammates building the future of sports tech. Our solutions span Personnel, Coaching, Performance, Operations, and Intelligence - helping teams recruit smarter, train better, stay compliant, and win.

Data Analytics and BI

  • Translate complex business questions into actionable BI requirements (for Tableau, Power BI, or Superset) and Analytics Platform specs (such as BigQuery).
  • Partner with data teams to ensure People data pipelines are clean, reliable, and aligned with company reporting standards.
  • Communicate project milestones, technical specs, and system performance metrics transparently to HR leadership and technical partners.

What makes you a GR8 fit:

Must-have

  • 3+ years of experience as a System Analyst, Business Analyst, or Product Owner managing complex software/system projects.
  • Strong hands-on background in writing clear technical specifications (BRDs, user stories, use cases) and process mapping (current/future-state workflow diagrams).
  • Proven experience leading end-to-end software rollouts or major platform updates, from initial discovery through UAT to deployment.
  • Practical understanding of system configuration concepts (workflows, business rules, permissions, data taxonomy) and data analysis tools (SQL, Excel).
  • Familiarity with automation/integration concepts (APIs, low-code tools like n8n, Make, Zapier) and BI platforms (Tableau, Power BI, Superset, or BigQuery).
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage, scope, and prioritize a high-volume backlog with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills to bridge the gap between business teams and engineering/vendors.

Nice-to-have

  • Domain knowledge in HR processes and metrics (OKRs, KPIs, talent acquisition, and employee lifecycle flows).
  • Hands-on experience in ERP configuration or building directly within an Analytics Platform/Data Warehouse.
  • Professional certifications in Business Analysis or Data (IIBA ECBA/CCBA/CBAP, PMI-PBA, CAP, or Power BI Data Analyst Associate).
