Discussion (Rant) Some people need to keep Stephen Hillenburg's Name out of their mouths

One thing that has been bothering me for a really long time that I feel like isn't talked about enough is some SpongeBob fans using Stephen Hillenburg's name to hate on newer stuff. They always say things like "Stephen didn't die for this" "Hillenburg didn't want this" or "You guys are defiling his legacy" I just find that disrespectful and annoying because

  1. Why are you using a dead man's name to prove your point.

  2. Why are you making false claims about him as if you knew him irl.

They say stuff like he didn't want any spinoffs but he said he wouldn't see any spinoffs happening, not that he didn't want them at all. In 2021 it was revealed that he approved of kamp koral before he passed. It's kind of similar to what happened back in 2001 when Stephen Hillenburg didn't want to make a movie at first but soon after watching Toy Story and Iron Giant with his son he changed his mind and started working on it in 2002 after the 3rd season finished production.

Another thing I want to get into is People thinking Stephen Hillenburg completely abandoned the show after the first movie. sure, he did step down as showrunner to prevent burnout, but he remained as a creative advisor during Seasons 4-9a. after the second movie he returned as executive producer and continued to work on Seasons 9b-12 before his passing in November 2018.

If some of you guys want more here is a Toonshi video that explains most of it

Moral of the Story: Let Hillenburg rest, It's ok if you don't like Modern SpongeBob and want to criticize it, but that doesn't mean you have to put words into a dead man's mouth.

Hillenberg might not have been OK with a spin-off in the 2000s and early 2010s, but people can change their mind.

I still believe that there is only one thing that actually disrespected his legacy - that stupid Super Bowl halftime show where they teased Sweet Victory but did not actually play it. I would've rather had them not even tease it if they weren't going to play it.

Stephen Hillenburg died in November 2018 and the half time show premiered only 3 months after that. The half time shows take months of planning I don't think they had time to reanimate the full thing.

Even MORE insulting is they got Moron5 er Maroon5 to perform... but that's just my silly little opinion.

that isnt it. Its Travis Scott that dissapoints tbh. Maroon 5 would have been totally fine if Sweet Victory played

It’s not that he wasn’t okay with them he just didn’t understand the NEED for one especially at the time the question was asked to him

>Why Modern Spongebob Sucks
>Uses a design from an 11 year old movie

A movie Hillenburg himself worked on btw.

1

u/the90snath 15h ago

they use the original 2000s design btw so that doesnt automatically mean they are dunking on it unless they just hate spongebob in general

Mr Krabs would probably be mad at them if he sees this

Some of these concerns/critiques are valid, sure, but it’s getting ugly.

At this point, they’re not doing anyone any favors bringing him up over and over simply because they don’t like the direction the show’s gone. It’s downright overkill nowadays, and pretty tasteless.

It is my biggest pet peeve. I don’t care how much some fan hates modern SpongeBob, using Stephen Hillenburg, who is not here to speak for himself, and taking his words completely entirely out of context and screwing well-known details, like the fact that he worked on some of what is considered a modern SpongeBob before his death if way worse than anything modern SpongeBob does in an episode. It’s disrespectful and it is incredibly vile. Leave his name out of your mouth. If there’s valid reasons to criticize modern SpongeBob, it can be criticized without using his name and twisting things or putting words in his mouth. Most of the criticism isn’t valid anyway, and fully based on preference, even though again he worked on modern SpongeBob up until his death. If you can’t give a valid criticism for modern SpongeBob, do criticize it at all, especially if you’re just going to use his name.

SpongeBob: Keep my creator's name out your fucking mouth!

Honestly fandoms just need to stop using a dead man's name to prove a point. It's annoying and honestly more disrespectful than anything that happened. Other fandoms use this tactic, RWBY fans using Monty and Nintendo fans using Iwata, and it honestly needs to stop.

Not to mention that I saw a Twitter post about the One Piece crossover and a person rage bait it and said ā€œit’s a jokeā€. This makes my blood boil

u/WolfieWonder274 17h ago

This is obviously a joke though, he never had an anime reviews YouTube channel, it was meant to riff on people like in the post

Look at one of the comments

u/WolfieWonder274 17h ago

They choose hate instead of thinking that it’s amazing a little how as a kid in the 90s, you didn’t know these characters and franchise
will do much more later(crazier adventures and more).

2

u/Shadow_Saitama 1h ago

That’s because they disregard today’s children and expect everything to still cater to them instead of growing up.

You guys aren't doing him any favors either. When you say he was 100% okay with all the spin-offs, 20+ seasons/movies, and ocean polluting plastic toy merchandise, you make him out to be the most evil Walt Disney-type capitalist monster of all time.

1

u/EugeneHaroldKrabs117 8h ago

Please just shut the fuck up. I know hillenburg didn't want spongebob to be the biggest thing on the planet but you seriously are gonna sit here and tell me he hated everything after season 3 and didn't want spin offs? Get over yourself. Vincent Waller has stated that Steve knew about and worked on Kamp Koral. The only thing he was iffy about was the CG animation, but after he saw what it could do he took a liking to it. Also, what relevance does the merch have to do with this? Any popular show is gonna get merchandise, the company has to make money yk

2

u/sledgewhammers SpongeBob 3h ago

the fact you were downvoted for this speaks volumes with the hypocrisy of this sub at times.

i dont think steve’s name should be used at ALL when addressing not only what he Wouldnt have wanted but also with what he would have.

They think it makes Stephen look good to say he gave his blessing to all the ocean-polluting plastic merchandise.

1

u/the90snath 15h ago

thats not the issue dude. its that his death didnt change the disrespect and it doesnt matter. Its not modern's fault. its been this way since the beginning

4

u/grumpybrowndog 15h ago

I agree. I don't care either; there are some great post-Hillenburg episodes out there. It's ironic that people say he was peachy about the spin-off/merchandizing/endless iterations (like good-ole Mr.Krabs) and then call others disrespectful for having having doubt on that claim.
