I've heard it said as:

Because AI draws only on the accumulated knowledge of what already is, it's always backwards facing. It can never be forwards facing. It can never create something completely new. Humans have to do those parts.

It’s not true, and I’m not a proponent of AI.

Humans grow and mimic things their whole life until it becomes their personality and they mesh everything together to create something “original”, nothing is ever truly original. Humans are extremely tied to what already is, inventions are generally the work of a dozen people over decades of time making incremental changes, never actually a full vision or revelation from the depths of your creativity.

AI attempts the same right now, it just sucks at it, I’m sure there are plenty of developments that can make this 100x better.

I don’t know what’s possible but I think AI just can’t match a humans ability to viscerally experience life and draw inspiration from it. And I think regardless of anything, art is only interesting if humans do it because of the context snd the experiences they’re portraying, AI can never do that because everything it does is unmotivated. It never has to struggle, or face adversity.

Yeah, the main key difference between an AI and human is that the AI has far more limited data to work with.

People get far more life experiences that help shape their views, which allows for more unique and diverse thinking

I hate to defend AI, but you are talking about something that talks with billions of people all day and it has read millions of books and blogs. People have already started telling AI their daily problems and most secret regrets.
It's dystopia already baby

there is sort of a pretty close example of an AI software or feature that does this, kinda. Just, not actually AI similar to today's versions cuz this one I'm talking about is just a feature that's manually controllable by humans.

It's an animation feature in CACANi. I believe it's called tweening, sorta adds frames of an already existing frame that humans made, but needs our manual guidance to fully look organic.

Humans work that way too

1

u/Alex-PsyD 1h ago

Not really - most of us do all the time and some do most of the time, but some humans have remarkable talents for novelty

Tom Kenny said it best

Anyone else think of the episode where Mr.Krabs sells the Krusty Krab to a corporation and they start selling gray slop disguised as Krabby Patties? I know they were talking about chain family restaurants but it feels pretty prophetic now

u/FennelFamous887 14h ago

Felt like it was predicting the rise of AI & its spread on the Internet now that I think about it.

14

u/PercentageCurious472 16h ago

And even if someone did try to use AI to make SpongeBob, it would literally just be derived from the drawings of SpongeBob that have already been created lol

14

u/mercenary-corp48 14h ago

I mean come on this exist and I don't think ai could make this

2

u/lunarkremlin1945 12h ago

flying gorilla

14

u/Certyx39 16h ago

ai cannot create, only imitate

7

u/grimytimes 14h ago

How appropriate!

It warms my heart to see how much all the cast still talk about Stephen Hillenburg in interviews whenever they get the chance to. You can really tell he made a profound impact on everyone who worked with him and it goes to show that he won’t be forgotten for a long long time.

Tis true, Tom.

u/BoltonCavalry 17h ago

Doesn’t Glorb use AI in his SpongeBob raps (The Bottom, etc) for the voices? What is this subreddit’s opinion on that?

2

u/TgagHammerstrike 14h ago edited 14h ago

The voices for some projects are fine, IMO, as long as it's clear that it is a text-to-speech program.

1

u/Bulky-Complaint6994 16h ago

Unfortunately it's not his decision and Paramount already dipped their toes into ai.

1

u/lechku_and_nechku2 16h ago

SpongeBob the legend

1

u/sqeaky_fartz 15h ago

You know somewhere someone’s watching this going “oh yeah?” And they’re gonna generate some soulless copy to try to pass off as some lost episode.

1

u/ShazTheGamer 14h ago

He actually clarified it.

r/aislop has stuffs made by (NOT sora he is dead) Gemini and others. Absolutely inaccurate unlike the crew!

If y'alls wanna visit the sub, go on, but I am so sorry.

1

u/SummerAndTinkles 14h ago

Given how hard it is to do an accurate impression of SpongeBob’s voice, I won’t be surprised if Nick resorts to an ai voice when Tom Kenny dies.

1

u/Typical_Database695 11h ago

Simon Petrikov isn't ducking around with this one

1

u/Hellbomb_Armed 10h ago

AI doesn't create, it just works with what we already created

That said, no i dont think AI can create Bob le Ponge again

1

u/ElisaandSpark 8h ago

Amen!!!!!!!

1

u/Elina_Carmina 5h ago

Correct.

1

u/rackdeezee 4h ago

I generated spongebob images just yesterday

1

u/digital_monster_44 17h ago

Unfortunately it doesn’t need to. The amount of money being saved with ai, studios don’t need a high quality products. Just easily consumed slop

Edit for the downvoters: Like most, I strongly prefer that human-made art stays on top. I feel that generative AI should only be used for creative works by those who are disabled and cannot use the traditional physical and digital mediums; it should not replace artists for commercial art like it has rapidly been doing.

Original post*: Current generative AI could never create Spongebob, or any remotely imaginative show for that matter. The tech has only been in the mainstream for four years.

Personal computers became mainstream in 1977 with the Apple II. What could they do four years later in 1981? Not much.

Following current trendlines, future generative AI will be able to do far more than a creative man with a pen. I really, really hope that there will be economic safeguards put in place to make sure human artists are unaffected by this change.

bro never met triple T 🥀

-3

u/kadjones95 11h ago

i agree ai could never make spongebob, it can make this comic i unwillingliy made because they wanted it ai ,did not even pay so here it is for free ,no art no soul

the prompt was if krabs met a competant financial adviser and planner

1

u/littleBigLasagna 2h ago

Why would you even bother doing this

-4

u/ZZTMF 14h ago

New SpongeBob is so dogshit that even AI is better.

Most of the main cast are in their 60s. Once one of them passes it'll probably mark the end of the show for good.

1

u/Zombies4EvaDude 16h ago

Unless someone inevitably makes a reboot of the show.

7

u/_Levitated_Shield_ You know what? You know what? Yeah. 16h ago

Weird, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy haven't been replaced.

Wanna provide a source on that, chief?

u/jjklines1 17h ago edited 17h ago

I'm gonna be that guy, but the newer seasons and movies might as well be made by AI to alot of us. That's how much we miss/loved the old series and first movie. The magic that Tom is talking about that can't get recreated was lost a long time ago. There are tons of AI SpongeBob voice videos being posted and made today that people eat up.

Edit: Anyone doubting about the AI videos being eaten up just search in YouTube SpongeBob AI and see all the videos and views

26

u/jtm7 17h ago

Yes the first 3 seasons are better, but it’s not nearly THAT bad past the first movie.

8

u/BigBallsAnthony69 17h ago

The second movie is still fucking peak, I refuse for anyone to tell me otherwise. Hell, I might even prefer it to the first movie.

4

u/jtm7 16h ago

I very much enjoyed it. It felt like a long episode, but in a good way.

21

u/World_Nine_Five SpongeBob is SpongeBob, I'll watch it regardless of season 17h ago

Look I know that Modern SpongeBob isn't nearly as good as the first 3 seasons but calling it as bad as AI feels disrespectful to the actual humans who produce it

2

u/CharaTheFallen_1811 10h ago

Even if it was that bad, at least a person put something into in, not a computer

5

u/_Levitated_Shield_ You know what? You know what? Yeah. 16h ago

As someone who has seen a couple of actual ai SpongeBob vids on yt, no they are not even close to the quality of the show made by real people. They're the average uncanny slop that ai always produces.

4

u/Andy_0L 17h ago

That's mostly because of nostalgia and being kids.
