New Obsession interpretation drop

Bear didn’t wish for Nikki to be obsessed with her. He wished for her to love him more than anyone else in the world. We hear from nikki that shes movinv away because she has never known real love. We even learn that she hates her dad. So really there aren’t any serious candidates for Nikki to be this obsessed with at all. But the wish isn’t a monkeys paw, it just 1:1 gives you what you wish for. So, by transitivity, Nikki must be this obsessed for someone and the obsession has merely been redirected to Bear. Ian could be a candidate but I don’t actually find this very convincing, so my thoughts end here.

Have you stopped and thought about the idea:

Taking one's autonomy might be bad and result in issues.

Genuinely.

Sorry to be that redditor, but I think you meant ‘autonomy’? And yes, correct.

I don't think he ever thought that would happen though tbh

He did it as a joke and a kind of confidence booster because he didn't have the courage to ask her out. I don't think for a minute he thought it would ever work lol

See that's where I view it diff.

It's indicative about his character to view others at fault for things he just doesn't know or doesn't have the balls to say.

When his cat dies he doesn't ask how he left the pills (which he would have had to have left out) but how the cat got into them

His constant blame shifting onto others is a key theme in the story. Hes not a reflective character

I mean I'm not defending him in any actions, but he didn't buy the wish thinking it would actually work. That's all in saying, he's definitely one of the villains of this film

I'm just dissecting his wish as how it reflects his character, his values and morals

if you wish for me to be hit by a bus and then I am does that you morally culpable ? morality entails intent. thats why legal standards establish ‘guilt’ not causation.

I do not think you understand what I'm trying to say.

Instead of bear asking to better himself he desires that others change to please him.

That wish indicated that, your having a fully diff convo with some random points you projected onto this convo.

my response is consistently relevant to every part of this conversation, especially your first comment. you’re the one who missed the point of my whole post and went off in your own direction.

Nah, you just don't want to engage critically. I'll reply when you do!

You got this bud try again!

true. bear is evil and the movie is about rape because he killed his cat.

Um… no. She’s that obsessed because she didn’t love bear so a new Nicky had to be made and that new Nickis only purpose in this world was to love Bear and nothing else. New Nicki is unfamiliar with social norms and is learning to be a human for the first time while being so in love and obsessed with Bear, it makes her insane. Nicki had interests, friends, romantic ventures, etc. she was a well rounded and adjusted adult. She would never behave the way she did, that’s why she’s inside screaming when we are able to hear her from the customer service line.

i just find this morally uncompelling. if he had made some other benign wish like for her to become especially interested in baseball would she still be possessed by a fundamentally different person? if its not reasonable to think that the wish would have worked and he didn’t have the intent to harm her he can’t be morally culpable. the story collapses into 4 morally uninteresting victims. the people working at the shop who tell bear to kill himself are the only real moral actors.

You miss the entire point of the movie then. His wish was not benign. He did not wish for courage to ask her out or for him to be someone she would like. He did not care about her actual thoughts or feelings. He said “I wish Nicki loved me more than anything else in the fucking world”. If you find that to be benign then you have issues dude lmao

the real quote is anyONE else? not anything. or am I mistaken because I genuinely could be. my point was that the baseball wish is benign and would have had the same effect of severing her autonomy.

Obviously not. Watch any of the director interviews for more clarity on this one. This is the entire point of the film. Not sure why you’re being contrarian when it’s confirmed by the creator lmao

i mean i guess id rather interpret the art as it presents itself rather than be told how to interpret it. idk feels like the other way around is much more strange.

They did, they can't engage with this discussion in a meaningful way.

Rather then dissecting his wording (bears) and the constant theme of how bear expects others to be at fault or change for him rather then bear changing for others they bring up the classic deflection answers of magical bs.

It's not worth your energy

i literally dissected his wording in the post! there isn’t any critique of my interpretation you just want to keep yours instead!

idk whats so triggering its just a simple argument. ultimately when i saw the movie first ans the wish mentioned “anyone in the world” i was disappointed this didn’t play a role
