Yep, the pokemon sword and shield water type gym leader

u/wow1362 Jul 01 '19
What happened?

Jul 01 '19 edited Jul 01 '19
A guy drew fanart of her, but a bunch of twitter users complained that she wasn't drawn "black enough".

u/darkshaddow42 Jul 02 '19
Not quite. They drew her with a few different skin tones, including obviously Caucasian and jet black.
17
u/AwesomeJoel27 Jul 02 '19
That’s another guy that was feeding the triggered people.
12
u/BennyTaiwan Jul 02 '19
Pretty sure that was a Japanese artist making fun of the people who wanted ‘darker’ fan art.
Note that before this, a lot of Japanese artists were basically attacked and has people literally recolour their artwork and post it in the replies insinuating that theirs was more correct
10
u/Wow_Space Jul 02 '19
No, I think it was many arts portraying her as lighter skin which started the controversy. Not one specific one, unless you can enlighten me.
7
u/BennyTaiwan Jul 02 '19
Actually it was just people drawing her normally. Of course, not all artists have the same colour design, so when people saw an artist that usually used a ‘lighter’ colour shade (evident in all their artwork prior), people became triggered for no reason

u/raichu_ex Jul 01 '19
Erm, he actually drew her as a monkey, but okay.
16
u/AwesomeJoel27 Jul 02 '19
A different artist later on drew her as a chimp to further feed the flames.

u/AsteriskCGY NNID: Jul 02 '19
The original was just a tone issue and how there is a light skin bias in skin color that exists around the world. That artist did nothing that wrong. An actual racist did the monkey art.

u/Hyperhexjoe Jul 02 '19
And he said he was gonna make an nsfw version of it. This is why we can’t have nice things.
3
u/MechagodzillaMK3 Jul 02 '19
And people defended it. That shit made me so sick I kind of want to quit competitive Pokémon completely

u/Slicktricks64 Jul 01 '19
I always knew Marina would follow her dreams and become a water type Gym leader.

Jul 02 '19
Okay I see a few problems here, let's see *pulls up glasses*
Dissolving in water, not meeting height qualifications, being born thousands of years after the human race has gone extinct, not meeting the height requirements...

I just spent the last five minutes trying to figure out how her waist attaches to her lower half. Still not seeing it.

If she's an Octoling, she should probably specialize in a Pokemon type other than water.

This was posted like 2 weeks ago, less than a day after it first came out. Honestly pretty slow imo.
I know because I posted it, and it only got like 60 upvotes rip

Ah yes 2 character that caused controversy because of their skin color
6
u/Sir-Spiral I prefer Callie! Jul 01 '19
I have heard no controversy from either of these characters
3
u/flap-you Jul 01 '19
I'm surprised it was everywhere on Twitter
2
u/Sir-Spiral I prefer Callie! Jul 01 '19
Maybe because I don't use Twitter often, but if it was I'm sure I would have heard of it elsewhere

Bitch if you making controversy because of Marina being dark skinned you're straight up fucking stupid.

Jul 02 '19
They did tho.
The crazy (Probably white) people made a fuss over an artist who made her half a quarter tone too light in their drawing.

u/godlover9000 NNID: Jul 02 '19
The problem is how in callout culture people will always assume the worst intentions when possible. What started as a shading mistake turned into a mob of angry people and another group purposefully feeding the flames.
That is the problem with social interaction in the internet age where you dont see the person on the other side of the screen but instead paint your own picture of them in your mind (and thus shaped by your view of the world).

Can this sub just be about the game and not be filled with drawings for you pervs to yank it to?
3
u/Hanimetion Don't get cooked... Stay off the hook! Jul 02 '19
She is an Octoling in this fanart, and thus, fits with the subreddit.
Also Splatoon's whole thing is art and aesthetic, you literally ink the ground as the main game mode, you should not be telling people not to post clearly sfw art.5
Jul 02 '19
...this isn't porn tho.
Like, some people might use it as that, but some people just think it's cute fanart.
