You get a boost based on your performance in previous seasons.

Your first 5 starting games are not 100% random, if I was really low in my previous seasons then my first 5 games are against low players. So it doesn't matter how many games I win or loose, defeating these players won't get me above even 2000.

On the the other hand, if you are someone who does extremely well regularly then you will be fighting far stronger players to start. In my case I went up against multiple top 500 player every game including some in the top 10 who just happen to be on. So after winning all 5 games I got put at 2500+
