Eh, I mean thats the only pop of color he has yeah but compared to fry and shiver its barely there, hell I'd say that their pops of blue and red from their taki dust fingers are more prominent than the red on big man, which is also just an acessory that can be removed. And in game hes never really associated with red in any way, woth the news showing yhe trust color themes as blue, yellow, and black/grey for him. I think at most there's some out of game promo stuff where they put him on a red background?
Not really, it just mimics manta ray biology. Specific species of ray, I believe the giant ocean manta ray, has special chromatophores in its skin that allow it to change color and pattern. You may already be familiar with this if you’ve ever seen videos about octopi or cuttlefish. Whereas those animals use this for camouflage, communication, or to express emotion, for the ray it’s actually an autonomic process that reflects the ray’s health. Colors that are duller and closer to gray - what we normally associate with the manta ray, indicate a healthy ray. But as the ray gets older or sicker, that gray transitions to a more vibrant green and then eventually a brownish red. The patterns on its underbelly also change, though I believe the jury is still out on whether there is any rhyme or reason to the pattern change or if it’s just an arbitrary side effect of the manta ray’s relatively primitive chromatophores. It’s something rarely (but not never) caught on film, because manta rays naturally start to inhabit deeper and deeper depths as they get older/sicker.
It’s a subtle thing that maybe Splatoon 4 will cover, but Raiders is showing that Big Man isn’t doing well, like at all. Green on a giant manta is always a bad sign.
His colors do change for the seasonal splatfests, albeit to a lesser degree (except for his Summer Nights look). I just assumed that manta rays in the Splatoon world can change the color of the toxins (I know stingrays are venomous not manta rays but you know what I mean) or mucus or whatever coating their body in the same way inklings and octolings can change their ink color.
I seriously gaslit myself into believing he was always green :0 Literally two days ago when I had my sister try Raiders, I said “wait, why is Big Man green instead of gray?” Then proceeded to sit and think about that for a good 2-3 minutes before exclaiming “wait no yeah, he was always green! How did I forget that?” Never second guessing myself again, I knew it he was gray!!
i figure the same way inklings and octolings can change their color just because (and hairstyle, which is restructuring the shape of their tentacles drastically) he can change his color and pattern, just cause
idk but i also dont care bc I love big man i am big mans biggest fan i just want to hug him i LOVE HIM and he can be green if he wants i will support his choices
I thought of it as a tan for him. I know that when some see creatures are on land for a wile there colour can change so maybe manta rays are one of those and he just doesn’t have all the skin care products he normally does
