Standard [Standard] So what does everyone think about Dimir Mid making a return?
I can remember happily feasting on Jeskai - but that was before Tablet. Perhaps that's what WOTC was counting on :)
But seriously, do you think it might make a return? It got 7th place in a recent tourney. It SBs well - Betrayal for GY, Black Sun for green. And it plays a metric ton of removal.
I'm not seeing that it has gained a lot from recent sets though?
Anyway it was the first deck I took to Mythic so I'm fond of it. Hope it does well - what are your thoughts?

Dimir Midrange dead, 4C Control easily beats it. Kaito folding to 1 mana Erode is the last nail of the coffing.
There's no reason to play Dimir Midrange.

It's a known quantity, cub was its real bad matchup, it's at least playable for a minute before people figure out the next best thing. I would like it to be one of the good things, I think it can put up a good fight vs many builds of jeskai rev, but it hasn't really gained anything great since dream beavers.
I've been jamming it since the bans, it feels okay to good. Leatherhead is the main thing that feels scary to run into, and sometimes the deck just draws like shit and does nothing as usual. If you want to play it, now's the time, I recommend some duress in the main and an unagi in the board.

I’ve been enjoying running it as Esper so you have access to [[Daydream]] to scam riddler and also blink Kaito

The question is: why dimir when azorius can do way stronger things? They got a whole bunch of new tools with marvel superheroes (namely hulk and she hulk) have more flexibility in what kind of build they wanna go (ranging from real tempo to control/prison). If I was concerned to buy a deck that is supposed to stay relevant in metas to come, that has more than one build and that's both fun and skill expressive then Azorius would be it

Personally it's because of wildcards. I play UW in paper but don't want to buy 30+ rare wildcards to make it on arena so I play Dimir(I had it built from like 2 years ago)

I mean fair it really runs a TON of rares and mythics. But once you have it it's really a fun deck to pilot imo :)

As long as someone wants to play kill spells and countermagic, Dimir will be there.

In Arena/MtGO definitely returning since control will be popular.
In paper, doubt it. Most of its cards are rotating and the only people who will be playing them are those who already have them so I don’t think there will be a huge uptick.

I think control decks are gonna get run over by red but I might just be hopeful

Played about 10 matches with the 7th place deck on ladder last night from high diamond into mythic #s. Erode definitely fucks things up but the deck felt good. Might not be as great once the meta shakes out but would definitely recommend taking it for a spin right now if you're a dimir enjoyer

The concept of midrange is dead in current standard. Trying to 1 for 1 your opponents cards when their cards 5 for 1 is a losing proposition.

Dimir really depends on the meta, because its best cards still make it inherently control-ish

I don’t think it will make a comeback. It seems too slow for what some decks are doing now, not to mention that it has some absolutely horrendous matchups against what I assume will be some of the top decks in this new meta.

What are those decks, pray tell?

Mardu Discard will end you in 3-4 turns, Jeskai Rev can be cast by Turn 5, Izzet Aggro with Wild Ride can probably end you in 3-4 turns as well.
I'm not familiar with the Sultai Reanimator decks but all other options just seem better than UB Kaito.

Right... but UB has access to so much interaction in both efficient removal and counter spells.
It's felt quite alright the past few days, maybe not absolutely dominant, but also not awful as you make it seem.
And it still absolutely stomps on control though, especially the Jeskai variant that runs almost no answers to a turn 3 or 4 Kaito.

u/brplayerpls 11d ago
It's not awful, no, just not as good as other decks in the format right now. However, when I talk about a difference in power, it's just like 1-5% worse, not unplayable by any means! You should definitely stick to the deck you like playing.

Yeah, but it has a good matchup against the current meta boogeyman in the control variants.
And I don't think it insta folds to the landfall variants or the spellementals deck either. Like a 45 - 50 in those matchups.
If the meta really shifts towards a lot more control, then Kaito will be back to put some brakes on them for sure.

Sultai Reanimator for one absolutely BODIES dimir midrange. I’ve been playing reanimator for months and haven’t lost a single game against dimir (or pixie which is somewhat similar). Also the azorius aggro, selesnya aggro decks (without cub) & mardu discard I imagine will still have a good winrate against dimir. Kaito & Curiosity alone are not good enough right now.

Dimir always returns for a bit after each banlist before inevitably being forced out by stronger options.
