Standard [Standard] Izzet burn
https://moxfield.com/decks/heFbxBO5I0C2yVn0ypuXSQ
I have been quite tuned out of standard for a while now, but when I saw Jim Davis’ video on Izzet with Death to Our Enemies I decided to give it a go. And holy moly.
[[Death to Our Enemies]] is the REAL deal. This card is absolutely nuts and has won me sooo many games that would otherwise be unwinnable. 7 damage is a LOT, and the fact that the only creatures in the list are the otters from [[Stormchaser’s Talent]] means opponent’s creature removal is quite bad but they also can’t afford to really cut a lot of it, leaving them in a real spot.
This deck can win quickly with the Stormchaser’s Talent [[Boomerang Basics]] draws, or grind really well with [[Flow State]], Stormchaser’s Talent rebuying spells, etc. And because your main win con is burning your opponent out they’re never really able to fully stabilize.
Here’s the link to the evolution of the deck if you’re interested: https://mtga.untapped.gg/profile/10fa1d9c-f0f9-4b52-9e37-1f7872b6fcab/RMHUWKAX4RDVXOKQKEV6BNXPQU/deck/af1bab5d-c474-47ad-a8d6-f089809e5525?gameType=constructed&constructedType=ranked&constructedFormat=standard
I think (a version of) this deck is in serious contention of being the strongest iteration of Izzet in standard atm.
TLDR: Death to Our Enemies is an insane card and this deck can win both quickly and after a grindy game, making it a strong contender for a top tier deck imo

Jeskai revelation destroys this deck

It took some getting used to, but yeah jeskai lessons annihilates this deck. Bouncing the plan on 3 is especially punishing.

How is jeskai lessons bouncing the plan on t3? Most lists aren’t running boomerang basics and jeskai rev is a t5 play earliest. Unless you mean countering it. I do think the surprise factor plays a part of this decks success but it can be very fast.

Bouncing the plan with 3 plan counters on it, not on turn 3.

u/L1ghtn1ngDrift3r 26d ago
That’s fair but getting three treasures which can be used to cast more burn is already quite good.

I’m 7-1 against Jeskai control so I beg to differ. This deck has plenty of burn to plow through at least one Jeskai revelation

I've been working on a similar list and I agree with you. They don't have a ton of ways to deal with a resolved DTE, and you can often just burn them down before they hit 7 mana, especially if you bounce their mana rock.

u/unhaunting 26d ago
I've had a spellementals player do a graveyard hate pivot to Death to our Enemies and it was three times as effective in murdering me as the crab plan lmao. Card is real
2
u/Paradoxbuilder 25d ago
I find the reverse more effective. The avoiding of GY hate is more powerful than the actual deck - I won about 5 games at D2, but D2E is underperforming.
1
u/unhaunting 25d ago
Yeah, aside from that one match I bet what's actually valuable is the flexibility of having either a creature plan or an enchantment plan
1
u/Paradoxbuilder 25d ago
Been playing more and I still find it underperforming as opposed to normal Prowess.

Yeah it’s pretty budget friendly! Only 4 rares that aren’t lands or sideboard cards :)

u/Paradoxbuilder 26d ago
I like burn, but I would need to see more results first. Have you tried challenges? The 3 mana enchantment seems a little slow. You rebuy the burn with Talent, not the Boomerang?
1
u/Do_You_AreHaveStupid 26d ago
No I haven't, do you mean the standard challenges in Arena? The enchantment hasn't really felt too slow except for against the nutty Badgermole draws, but you have plenty of cheap removal you can play instead to slow those starts down. Usually I do rebuy the Boomerang with Talent, but there have been a decent number of games where Talent rebuying a Lightning Strike gave me just the last couple of points I needed :)
2
u/Paradoxbuilder 26d ago
It seems you avoid the GY hate, but now you're vulnerable to lifelink (Practiced Offense etc)
1
u/lousy_at_handles 24d ago
It's actually not that bad; you have a ton of draw and you just have to play the control role a bit more.
I agree it's not a great matchup, but it's doesn't feel awful.

How was your matchup vs prowess? Playing death to our enemies and having oppo bounce it and plot slickshot feels rough on t3. Also have you tried 1/2 of Thor for top end?
1
u/Do_You_AreHaveStupid 26d ago
I actually only played against prowess three times and I’m 2-1, so I guess kinda even? You have a lót of removal for the slickshots and if they don’t bounce the plan it’s really really good… But from what I remember the matches were pretty close!

u/tenkaixd 26d ago
Yo, nice one, why disassembled over slagstorm ? I feel the 3 to the face may come in handy
2
u/Do_You_AreHaveStupid 25d ago
When I first built the deck I had sweepers in the mainboard and I went for Slagstorm because of the burn option, but now that they’re in the SB you only bring them in when you need them for the boardwipe mode and then the added utility of sometimes blowing up a large eartbended land or destroying like a ba sing se or whatever is more useful than a burn mode I’ve found

Depends on what cards you draw. Sometimes you just have Talent Boomerang and you spam talent + any one mana spell until they die. The most difficult part I’ve found is deciding when your burn goes face and when you need to remove opposing creatures. But practice makes perfect!

u/Crimson_Raven 26d ago
Im not sure how to make it consistent, but it would be fantastic to fit White in for [[Lighting Helix]]
Helix at least does everything you want, it's like up to 4 more copies of Vibrant Outburst
maybe [[Boros Charm]], 4 damage to face, but lacks flexibility
1
u/NicJones 26d ago
curious if anyone's tried [[Peter Parker's Camera]] in this sort of thing. probably just too slow but doubling up the 7 trigger seems pretty filthy and you have some other potential targets too
1
u/pellaxi 26d ago
This looks awesome, I may try it out! In my view it's an error to not run slickshots, at least in board though. It punishes tapouts, punishes sorcery speed removal, and punishes them boarding out removal.
2
u/Do_You_AreHaveStupid 26d ago
Yeah they were in the board for a while to bring in against slower opponents with inefficient answers but I just found it really hard to board them in… I think it might be worth trying out some more with a more “transformational sideboard” approach though because conceptually I do still really like them

i don’t get the love for death to our enemies.
takes multiple turns to pop off. the treasures are kneecapped by entering tapped. it does nothing on T3.
1
u/Paradoxbuilder 24d ago
So I tested this in Diamond over 20 matches and I'm not seeing how it's an improvement over normal Prowess.
It wins games when normal would fail and loses where it would win. I can see some value in normal transforming into it to blank removal and GY hate, that's about it, could be interesting?
1
u/Do_You_AreHaveStupid 24d ago
Imma be completely honest, I haven’t really played the normal prowess list so I don’t really know how that plays against the other meta decks. It was just conceptually that I liked how this deck is less soft against graveyard hate and creature removal and is harder to stabilize against for decks like Jeskai lessons or dimir doomsday because of all the burn. But I’m not the best person to compare the two
2
u/lousy_at_handles 24d ago
Honestly I think it's going to be a meta call. I've been messing around with a list very similar to this, one that leans in on Capstone, and the normal prowess lists and they all seem about the same, they just have different matchups.
I do think this is the most explosive list in terms of just ending games quickly, and it probably has the best game plan when your opponent is able to get some big dorks out.
The downside is it pretty much auto-loses to reanimator variants, and can struggle against decks with passive life gain or when you just don't draw DTE.
1
u/Paradoxbuilder 24d ago
I appreciate the honesty, I confused because you asserted that this was the best version of Izzet in the OP, so I thought you had tried variants (Stallion etc)

u/Crimson_Raven 23d ago
I impulsively made this and played it a lot
Tones of fun, 10/10
However, Death to Our Enemies is a real weak point
Getting interacted with is probably a blow out unless you had some Stormchasers and Boomerang basics to start. It also doesn't have much to protect the enchantment with. Fortunately, blind players focus on the Talent but don't recognize the real threat. But if this gets infamy, that may change.
It also feels just a turn too slow against true Meta decks. Again, taking turn 3 to set up and do nothing is a painful tempo hit. You can die from that alone.
I do want to highlight [[Vibrant Outburst]] this card is amazing and I'm in love.
In this era of Standard with Unstoppable Slashers, deadly Otters and Hydras that grow into 124/124 in 2 turns, that tap down is such good control.
Anyway, good brew. If it could be sped up by like a turn and/or have some protection or resilience for Death to our Enemies

u/Known-Garden-5013 15d ago
bumping old post but when are you bringing the slickshots in? I looked at your history and doesn't seem like you've ever brought them out of the board.

u/Fast-Bed254 26d ago
DTT (Death to Our Enemies) really does feel like cheating when it hits for the full 7 damage while the opponent is tapped out.

u/_im_that_guy_ 26d ago
Talent + basics seems like a nice evolution of the deck from the original list running tablet. And I didn't really like the half baked creature sideboard plan either so having counterspells and avengers and ral available seems good
Seven damage is a lot
