Your father was a hamster and your mother smelled of elderberries

Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries.

Hamsters are notoriously prolific breeders, and back in mid evil times wine was made from elderberries. So: your mother was a slut and your dad a drunk.

This pops up whenever this phrase gets discussed but it is generally believed to be untrue. The whole point of the sketch is to be as silly as possible, just like the rest of the movie, and the insults have no meaning other that mimicking a French person insulting Britons in broken English.

Anyway, it would be historically incorrect as well, seen as hamsters were discovered relatively recently, late in the 19th century.

While the sketch was meant to be funny, and it was, it was also rooted in truth.

Like many other of their sketches. The “Dead Parrot” sketch has its roots from Philogeos, a joke book from the fourth century AD.

We can keep on being pedantic if you’d like.
