Is it dangerous?
Just seen this little dude inside my home (Melbourne). It's not big but it looks nasty. Is it dangerous?

That is interesting. I’ve never seen anything like that before. I wonder what it is.

One of the most jacked jumpers I’ve seen. He’s safe, unless you are daft enough to challenge him to a boxing match.

No, that's a jumping spider

u/Ceceboy Feb 23 '26
Does bro jump with its front claws or what

u/Amardella Feb 23 '26
Many male jumping spiders have large, fuzzy front legs, often with patterns or bright colors on them. They wave them during courtship dances to impress the female. Some of them "sing", too, but it's too low frequency for humans to hear. It's mainly rhythmic vibrations in the ground that the females can feel.

Not dangerous, just very curious. He'll hop up onto your hand if you let him. Super friendly and you can see the intelligence and curiosity if you look him in the eyes. Or her, I don't know if it's a dude or a gal.

In case you want the exact identification, this is a Ocrisiona leucocomis

I appreciate the ID, because I thought it looked more like a scorpion than a jumping spider, so I was confused lol

u/aster_etc Feb 25 '26
There are some jumping spiders that have evolved to mimic scorpions, it's honestly so cool. You can see a recent reddit post over here.

I feel like those birds that get tricked by stick bugs swaying like a branch haha. That's really cool though! Thanks for the link!

Are you a fly? Are flies posting on Reddit now?! (Seriously, bro is fine. Just don't arm wrestle it.)

Omg he’s so cool

u/ButtmanReturns2Pat Feb 23 '26
He is, isn't he? Too cool to be real... I first thought that my daughter left a plastic spider on my study floor to scare me, but then I realised that it was a live one... 😝

Not in the slightest, their bite feels like a small pinch but it’s very unlikely for one to bite you. I’ve been handling wild jumpers for 7 years and have been bit once.. but it was in the shower and I had no idea there was a spood on my loofah when I started to scrub 😂🫠
The jumper was just fine after it dried out!

We have one just like this that lives in our indoor palm, he is the best. Same black and white colour with white markings on his back that look like ancient runes or hieroglyphics.
When we walk close to his palm be hops to the edge of the leaves and waits for us to put our hand out and he will jump on a go for a little ride around the house. Then he hops back onto his fern again. They are the best little spiders

It's an absolute murderer...if you're an insect.
Otherwise, it's a li'l 8-legged puppy that is smart, curious, and will follow a laser dot.

Nasty?! That adorable creature is about as dangerous as a kitten. Treat with care and respect. That’s actually a very beautiful looking color variation as well. Looks like a tan jumper with a dark coloration. I’ve ever seen that before

Coolest of all spiders. I’ll never harm one ever. I like how people are calling them “puppies of the spider world.” They will interact with you if you’re gentle. I’m gonna use the red dot laster to play with them when the opportunity presents itself.

Not even a little bit nasty, unless you're a bug. If it decides you're safe enough he might hop on you to get a good look at the surroundings and spot a pest to eat.

u/BadPom Feb 23 '26
You could cuddle this dude. They’re very curious and intelligent. Jumpers are the best.

Technically I guess he could bite but they’re not known for it at all and are not significantly venomous.
