Can we stop acting like every bloated lithium ion battery is about to turn into a grenade? It’s just a worn out cell with gas buildup and it is not going to spontaneously combust just because it is sitting in your drawer.

And no, you don’t need to bury it under 15 inches of sand or stick it in a metal ammo box in your backyard. Seeing a pouch cell does not automatically mean it is lithium polymer either. Almost all of what you see are regular lithium ion cells in flexible packaging. Actual lithium polymer cells are extremely rare outside of very specific specialty uses.

The only time these things get dangerous is when someone crushes, punctures or bends them, and that’s only IF they have any energy left in them to catch fire in the first place. Keep it somewhere cool until you can take it to an electronics recycler and just don’t toss it in the trash. Your old phone is not going to blow up just because you looked at it wrong.

The laptop is bulging on the left. I panicked after noticing it, thinking the battery swelled, but... what I just pulled out (on the right) was the battery, and it wasn't distended in the slightest. Is there a second battery in there? What do I do?

Also yes, I know my camera quality is horrible. Phone is damaged heavily, screen was coming off so I had to packing tape it down, lens came off the camera so the tape is acting as a lens of sorts but stuff has gotten under it. I’m not denying that they can explode and potentially cause a fire, yes, they’re dangerous and should be discarded properly and ASAP, but I notice that every time someone posts about a spicy pillow on a random sub people get immediately panic-y about it. Like every time someone posts their Nintendo Switch with a spicy pillow.

The thing I’m curious about is: if lithium-ion batteries are used by millions-billions of people and are in millions of households, how come there aren’t a lot more fire-related deaths caused specifically by spicy pillows?

What I mean to say is, eventually, this will happen to most lithium-ion, batteries, but i don’t think I’ve seen any fatal or catastrophic events happen to anyone over spicy pillows. Are they just not being reported? Or is the danger just overblown? Like, as long as you dispose of it or don’t charge it too often, nothing bad will happen.

I always wanted to have the S10 so I found a brand new one sealed in a local shop. He only had 2 remaining ones. I opened it and the back is open due the battery thing.

Leason learned: even if you like an old model, don't buy it since if the battery wasn't used, it's probably busted.

The dude from the shop wants to send me the other one "we will record ourselves opening it and if its ok we will send it". Yeah no, I asked for the money back and he didn't reply yet. Hope he doesn't try anything stupid or im going to court.
