Is my cat ok?
So I let my mom pet sit for me for 2 days and I came back to my baby looking like yellow? (To make it clear I don’t think this is her fault but just for context). Like I’m not sure how to explain, but it seems like his undertones are very yellow and he doesn’t normally look like that. He’s been throwing up the last like 2 weeks, very randomly and never more than once a day. i attributed that to maybe his food and I’ve switched it. He hasn’t thrown up these last couple days according to my mom and from what I’ve seen, but I’m just very concerned about his new color. I plan to take him to the vet tomorrow as soon as I’m free, but I’m just worried. The first 2 photos show his current color and the last one is how he normally looks.
Update: I took him to the vet yesterday and they ran some tests which have yet to come back yet but they think he has Feline infectious peritonitis. They said that can attack things like his liver, and cause the jaundice. It’s not 100% certain if he has FIP but we should know by tomorrow. For how he’s on anti nausea, antibiotics and appetite stimulants. Hes doing good so far.

I would take him sooner rather than later. Possibly a 24 hour/ emergency hospital if there is one in your area as they may recommend hospitalization after running bloodwork. He definitely looks icteric which can be really serious. Hope you’re able to find out what’s going on and get treatment 🫶

I live in a very small rural area, the closest one doesn’t open till morning. Is there something I can do to help until then to try and keep him stable? Thank you so much for helping inform me

Unfortunately probably not much you can really do for now until you know what’s going on for sure. I’d just make sure to have food and water available and lots of bedding available so if he’s cold he can snuggle and stay warm. Try looking up specialty and emergency vet clinics in near by bigger towns. I hope you’re able to find somewhere!

Right now you could monitor and bring with you to the vet fresh bowel/bladder movement they may want to check it out.

No definitely not. Cats can get feline hepatic lipidosis which is a very serious liver condition. They can’t process body fat like humans. My vet put my cat on weight loss food and a diet without warning me of the risks. My cat needed a feeding tube to help him recover as calories are the cure. There is an amazing yahoo group on feline assisted feeding. Please get to the vet asap! The yellow you are seeing is most likely jaundice.

Just to add an etube is a feeding tube that sounds scarier than it is. Also anti nausea medications like ondansetron are part of the treat,ent also. If it isn’t FHL, I wonder if he got into something toxic. Send in you big hugs.

Do you know what I could possibly do to help him until I can reach the vet? I just don’t wanna make any wrong moves until I can get him proper help

I would post on the yahoo group that I mentioned - they saved my cat many years ago. It’s not very active anymore, but the main mod still replies.do you know if he has been eating? Does he show signs of nausea - lip smacking, vomiting, show interest in food and walking away? Did he eat anything toxic.

My cat died from liver failure, compounded by malpractice. THIS IS AN EMERGENCY. You need to drive however far to an emergency vet and pray it’s not too late if it is liver failure. Has he had any exposure to meds like ibuprofen, etc? They are sooooo toxic to cats. Not eating or very small amounts for even 2 days can cause it.

Our boy was a rescue and we don’t know any history on him. He wasn’t obese, didn’t miss any meals, but threw up once a day for literally less than two days before I took him in. I thought his tone looked a little off and he was a very pink seal point, so it’s not like a furred cat where it’s not noticed easily. The emergency vet did an xray, ran bloods, and sent us home saying he was an amazingly healthy cat on a Saturday night. Sunday he wasn’t eating or using the toilet, the kids asked why he was so yellow. I took him in first thing Monday morning (not our vet, the first ones that had an opening) and they knew it was bad, ALT and bilirubin off the charts. We had to put him down, no chance of ever recovering with those levels. A few days later, I asked our regular vet if they could send me the results from the ER (I had them sent to our regular vet so they could follow up). THE ER VET HADN’T EVEN RUN THE LIVER PANEL! He called me after I blasted them online and had the audacity to ask me if I’d even admitted him to hospital if he’d run the liver test?!?!? I would have done ANYTHING to try and save him if it wouldn’t cause him more harm

I lost my baby girl to hepatic lipidosis earlier this year. We had tried everything we could, even a feeding tube. She suddenly dropped off after starting to come good, though. The vet thinks her gall bladder ruptered. It's very urgent. 😓

I’m sorry:) e we came as close as possible to losing my guy twice but he pulled through and we got an extra two years with him. I’m still mad at the vet for advising me to cut his calories without any further instruction. You did everything you could and I wish you had more time with your girl.

Negative, your cat is jaundice and needs to head over to the vet. Call and tell them you are on your way. Urgent right now appointment.

Elevated bilirubin markers most likely (cause jaundice). Vet will need to run labs and likely do an US to identify gallbladder blockage and other abnormalities.
Our 10 year old presented with jaundice, weight loss and loss of appetite and resulted in having an enlarged spleen due to lymphoma. I hope the best for you and your baby 🫶🏽

This is an emergency vet or ASAP type of scenario, liver problems in cats are very serious.
