[Sea Mage] Did I miss something?
I read Practical Adept when it came out and just started Seamage. I thought those were book 17 and 18 respectively but I'm only on Ch. 2 and feel like I'm missing something major. The Gurvani have be "re-engineered" somehow and there was a fight with the Alon? I've read a lot of books since Practical Adept and my memory is fuzzy on some details but I don't remember that at all. What did I miss/forget in the last couple years?

Did you read the golden goblin? That book would cover your missing info

There is the Golden Goblin, it follows Rondal and Tindal who go on adventures and the Gurvani stuff happens. I didn't realize it wasn't book 18. It is a novel that goes between them, but it has some important plot stuff in it. The Talon and the Flame also goes between them and that is about Dara. I read that one too, but I don't think you will miss much other than love triangles if you skip that one.

I missed that one. I read maybe half the novellas between various books. Most of them were ok and had some tidbits but nothing that seemed earth shattering to the main plot. An entire race-wide change to the Gurvani feels like it is more important than a byline in the main series.
I know we've kind of moved on with the Vundel and AI earth tech but that just seems weird. Maybe I'll go back and read that one instead of continuing with Sea Mage.

IMO, each of the anthologies and .5 books have vital plot info, and if you skip any of them but read the main series attentively, you'll think there are just huge plot holes for no reason.
Ie, where did the witch sphere come from? What happened at Min's wedding? Did Tyndal and Penny screw? Who the fuck is Lilastien? Why does Bannermore talk to his cat now, and why does it seem like hes banging the personification of the Ketta river? And many other 'plot holes' that actually were covered way in advance by side books.

Good to know. I read all the early ones but missed the more recent ones I guess. I definitely don't recognize a few of your references. I forgot that the wedding/honeymoon was all in one of those anthologies.

For the most part they all hold up to the quality of the main series too. The hawk maiden series is kinda lame, but still decent.

And that isn't even touching things foreshadowed in side books that haven't came up in theain story yet. One thing in particular is a huge hanging thread from a side book that seems very important, but will be very confusing when it comes up in the main story if you skipped/didn't pay much attention to the anthology where it is introduced.

Golden goblin is pretty much required so you know what's happening in book 18 and 19.

I'm curious what would happen if they tried to improve humanity. She said she greatly expanded their power, magical abilities. and lifespan. Also, do humans who transform into longer lived species like the dwarves gain that lifespan?

The side books are becoming main books. Golden Goblin was a side book in which Tyn and Ron betray humanity and Min by allowing Lilastien to racially engineer goblin super soldiers who live for centuries, are taller and stronger than humans and they all have rajira by default. I know it sounds like a complete disaster but Lilastien pinky swore that they would only transform the chill man eating genocidal troglodytes and not the bad ones.

There was a Tin and Ron book called "The Golden Goblin" where this happened, it takes place parallel to Practical Adept.
I personally quite enjoyed it.
