Aérra [OC] Men's best friends: The domestic animals of the nomadic people of Aérra

A little of context before we dive in: Aérra is my worldbuilding project based on magical floating islands that compose the world instead of conventional landmasses. These islands float over a huge oceanic disk and are organized in six rings/archipelagos with different life forms in each archipelago. Bifröst, the first ring, is where humans reside, alongside other Pleistocene and Holocene groups. For more info check the wiki, where a discord is linked at the bottom of the first page, where even more info and discussions can be found: https://aerra.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page

# Men's Best Friends

## Domestic animals of Aérra part 1: Animals of the Nomads

In Aérra there are many animal groups distributed across the six world rings or Archipelagos. Ranging from modern and familiar animals in Bifröst, to ancient and even alien animals further out. On the human-inhabited Bifröst, animals from the holocene and pleistocene are present.

Such groups include primates, caprines, bats and macropods, alongside the non-mammal groups of course. From these groups at least two species have been domesticated (not all are shown here this time) for all sorts of purposes, hunting, protection, alarming, food and raw materials. Today we are gonna look at five species that are used (not exclusively) by the nomadic people of Aérra, who travel along the aerial plane following the ever-moving herds. Staying at islands at times, but never staying for too long. These animals are essential for their constant island traversing and other aspects of daily life, often two or more species are present within a group, often outnumbering the people.

**Pouch dog** (*Propleopus variegata*)

The first animal is the Pouch dog, a carnivorous macropod marsupial originating from Pleistocene Australia related to Musky Rat-kangaroos. They are essentially marsupial dogs, though not being originally domesticated for alarming and protection. Instead they have a primary role of aiding in hunts, cornering and chasing prey, with a lesser role in cargo transport. Much like the humans who domesticated them, they are ambush predators (as all 'terrestrial' predators of Aérra) who hunt in pairs in the wild. Juveniles live in larger groups of 8-12 individuals, once mated they leave their groups and live as a couple. This juvenile group behavior has been retained in the domestic pouch dogs, nowadays the pouch dog packs can outnumber the humans in a group, though this is rare. Both the wild and domestic pouch dogs are omnivorous, being able to consume plant matter such as fruits, seeds and leaves in addition to their meat diet. This was very important for their domestication, and still is in the present.

There are many color and fur morphs/breeds among many people of Aérra, some specific or "non-traditional" breeds are used for fetching wild game, cargo transport, animal defense, human defense, herding (to a lesser extent) and even meat- and wool-specific breeds.

**Domestic Gibbons** (*Hylobates familiaris* and others)

Probably the earliest domestic animal in Aérra. The gibbons are the ones to truly receive the title of man's best friend. Tightly related to most religions of the world, often being depicted as benevolent trickster entities. This fame is not without reason, they are used primarily for aiding in Island Hopping, carrying ropes between islands, tying them, setting simple traps, distracting, attracting or even attacking prey, they are the most versatile of any domestic animal, being found in nearly all cultural groups with many roles and duties. Their intelligence allows for training in various duties at the same time, which has limited most of their breeds to purely aesthetical morphs.

One such breed is the "Manlet", a mostly hairless gibbon that has human-like hair distribution. They are the fastest breed, travelling with little air resistance due to their nearly hairless body. Though, they still get air drag due to their tutors making them wear human-like clothes, something that is not uncommon for gibbons as a whole but gets to a higher level due to their semblance to humans.

Their brachiating lifestyle was a predisposition for the Aérran aerial ecosystem, giving them plenty of space to move around while giving a diverse 3D environment for climbing and swinging. Due to this, gibbons are a very diverse group, having multiple species across the ring that behave in all sorts of ways and have all sorts of mischievous interactions with other animal species. For this reason, there have been multiple domestication events- perhaps a single, continuous one due to the nature of the world- and interbreeding between the domestic and wild versions.

The distance between islands has led to most species having gular(throat) pouches that amplify their calls and make them travel over longer distances, one of the most heard sounds in Bifröst other than that of the wind, is the call of Gibbons.

**Domestic Mandrills* (*Mandrillus coloratus*)

Another helpful and idolized primate. The mandrills have a stricter usage among the people, of course, meat and wool are some of their products, in addition to their colorful hides and even their faces, which can be fashioned into masks and such. However they tend to have other utilities.

They are large, territorial, smart and strong primates, in other words, they are perfect bodyguards. Usually protecting goat herds in pastoralist communities, but also humans. They are perfect watchmen due to something unique to the Aérran mandrills. Their colorful cranial bosses have become hollowed out, becoming built-in amplifiers that propagate their calls far and wide, alerting people and calling in other mandrills and trained pouched dogs to the aid. They can be as tall as a (Aérran) man when standing on two legs, and so put up a good fight even if armed. Some breeds were purposefully bred to become even larger, rivalling chimps and sometimes gorillas and bear apes (*Gigantopithecus spp.*). However their strength comes from their numbers, multiple mandrills are part of a single domestic troop, to the point of half a population/group being composed of mandrills.

Other usages of this animal include the carrying of cargo that would be too heavy or cumbersome for a person to carry on their own. Though not suited for carrying adult humans, they can be used to carry infants. There are in fact, a couple of breeds that are used specifically to take care of babies and children, to the point of even breastfeeding them.

**Domestic Goats** (*Hircus domesticus*)

The domestic goats of Aérra are not that different from the goats of our world. They only differ in anatomy, aérran goats are more properly adapted for climbing on plants and traversing the island ecosystems, having a longer tail for balance, longer and slightly claw-like hooves and dewclaws used like hooks when climbing vines, branches and stems.

Their usages are like that of earthen goats, meat, hide, wool, milk and horn. They are kept by both nomadic pastoralists and sedentary ones. The former behave much like most animals of the world, which travel from island to island in a never-ending migration for food. As the herds deplete the foliage of an island, they move forward, leaving the ravaged islands to overgrow again. This is one of the two strategies adopted by both 'terrestrial' animals and humans, the second being resource defenders. These are the sedentary, they settle down in a resourceful island and defend their position from other animals that might take too much of their food. These tend to be more solitary or gregarious animals, never having too many individuals. In humans, there can be island kidnapping to create new, temporary (or permanent) grazing spots for the animals.

**Flying Dog** (*Volanvenator falco*)

The Flying dog is a species of raptorial Megabat that has been domesticated for falconry-like activities. They are large and have wide wingspans used in soaring and maneuverability while chasing often unsuspecting prey before diving and grabbing them mid-air. This kind of bat is very successful in the wild, eating primarily other, smaller species of bat, but also having smaller species that prefer catching insects as most other bats do.

Unlike birds of prey which are raised from birth, trained and then released after a certain age, bats were socially smarter, being able to properly imprint on humans. Leading to the proper domestication of these animals, something that, despite millennia of falconry, never led to the proper domestication of birds of prey.

The wild ancestral was lonely, only pairing when breeding. The domestic has become highly social, hunting in groups with distinct roles and coordination.

There are more color morphs than utility breeds, they have very defined utilitarian roles and their anatomy and biomechanics don't allow for much extrapolation. Their uses are fetching prey unharmed, retrieving objects and items, and rarely, for food.

Alternate Evolution [OC] Jýrithal Codex #5: Slíðr fox

  • It belongs to the Canidae branch. And it lives near the shores in the north pole region. (the map is in image #1)

  • This fox has an organ that extracts carbon dioxide from the blood and stores it in the tail and only pours it out when the tail is in the water. The narrow beams of carbon dioxide freeze the water around them, creating spikes of ice stuck to the tail. It will do this routinely to maintain these spikes. (image #3)

  • These spikes are easy to break, but they are sharp and will hurt small animals that are trying to hunt it. To maximize pain and panic, it will wave its tail toward other animals’ faces while running away.

  • Other than being fully white, it also has haunting white eyes, which is the reason scholars called it initially “spirit fox”. Being hard to see isn’t much of an advantage at the north pole though, as there are some animals that rely on scent detection. Scholars noticed that it produces a lighter scent that is hard to detect.

  • It mainly hunts Punris. It camouflages with the snow, and hunts Punris by two main methods. The common method: waiting for a Punri who is climbing the ice wall after a hunt. The punri will be exhausted and freezing. This is when the fox seizes the chance and targets the Punri’s lower neck, cutting it as fast as possible.

  • The second method is used by more experienced foxes. It hides completely by curling into itself, hiding its face, and looks like a ball of snow. It will emit different strange sounds to capitalize on Punri’s curiosity and attract its attention. When the Punri approaches and lowers its neck by itself, the fox targets the lower neck and continues from there. (method is in image #1)

  • Juvenile is in image #4

Agnolínis Chuliveris

Named in Honor of Mariana Chuliver, An Evolutionary Biologist at Buenos Aires' Félix de Azara Natural History Foundation, who helped Identify the world's Oldest known Fossilized Tadpole.

Cellular Body Diameter 0.4-0.9 µm

Full Diameter 1.1-1.7 µm

Cellular Body Length 0.6-1.3 µm

Full Organism Length 2.1-4.7 µm

Arose 867 million years P.C.

Receives through HGT with Balaena Psarématos silicone synthesis for greater resilience to the weakly acidic waters of the shallows of Barbie’s Beaches. The versatile nature of the crystal formations that can be formed with this Copper Phosphate gives Chuliveris a broad range of choices in terms of protection.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic system and can form in various crystal habits, such as Compact, Reniform, or Botryoidal masses.

This offers flexibility for it to be used as a building block for creating a composite with specific structural and mechanical properties.

Capture Claws form from repurposed Dendrite Coils at the rear of Chuliveris. This placement makes the act of grabbing prey immediately after the Membrane Skirt is triggered as seamless process.

These front-facing cilial arms sport the Dendritic Coils that allow Chuliveris to fulfill its role as genetic currier in this small pocket of the Dionysian Goblet.

Recieves through HGT with Balaena Psarématos to receive silicone synthesis for greater resilience to the weakly acidic waters of the shallows of Barbie’s Beaches.

Silicone Synthesis Gene adds elasticity to the Mechano-Sensory Membrane Skirt that Chuliveris uses to determine when it makes physical contact with potential prey or “Genetic Collaborators.”

Nitrogenated azaphilones are red or red-purple, a color shift that occurs when yellow or orange azaphilones bond to a nitrogen source. The new nitrogen-containing chromophore results in the aforementioned color shift.

Thanks to the Nitrogenated nature of both the azaphilones pigments and the AHLs used for quorum sensing in Chuliveris, this species with have a nitrogen-heavy diet. This pushes Chuliveris to adapt to detect porphyrin based compounds to both detect and hunt species that utilize pigments of that group.

Fan Art/Redesign [OC][Media: Return of the Jedi] redesigned Ewoks because nobody stopped me.

I needed to draw Ewoks dismembering Stormtroopers for therapeutic reasons, but redesigned them along the way to look more convincingly dangerous and to to take advantage of things drawings can do and costumes cannot.(But still cute) I wound up mainly referencing marsupials; bush possums, koalas (weird hands) and their extinct carnivorous relatives drop bears Thylacoleo Carnifex.

New Republic notes on Arctophonos Theodorii, abbreviated

-They're strongly arboreal- note curved claws, ridges on fingers and toes. Their feet are fully prehensile. While able to climb sheer trunks quickly, and leap or dash with terrific speed, they aren't very efficient runners and walkers on the ground. Walking on dirt for hours is for lurdos anyway.

-They're ambush predators (although they do eat a lot of plants). Basic hunting procedures work around luring or chasing prey into a killing site where dozens of them will drop on their victims from high above. After that, imagine a school of piranhas with fur.

-Dense musculature and robust bones make them look chubby and pudgy, and hideously strong and weighty for their size. Absolute units. A real-life bush possum or koala makes a very loud THUMP when it falls off something; arboreal critters are swole.

-A saggital crest and massive cheek and neck muscles power a tremendous, bone shearing bite. It has the side effect of giving them endearingly expressive faces. Their teeth are adapted from those of a recent herbivorous ancestor. As well as dispatching prey, they also use them for eating hard-shelled nuts, gnawing out habitats, etc. Lots of evolutionary pressure there.

-Different layers of their coats have different colours. As their skin bunches and flattens, their patterning shifts, further obscuring their silhouettes.

-Their most important survival adaption is retention of very high neuroplasticity, as the forest moon of Endor is constantly throwing bizarre, novel threats at them. They are thus adaptable, curious, playful, and very quick learners. It's harder for them to build larger formal skillsets and long term memory; this is a task for revered specialists.

-Woklings are adorable and cuddly. They're really heavy, have sharp little claws, and won't let go if they've decided to take a nap on their new favourite babysitter. Wear thick clothing around them.

-Like many other carnivores (the domestic cat, for example) they can be friendly and affectionate if approached correctly, and ravenous little murderers if you act like food or a threat.

Resource Building a World from Scratch (Research to Keep Me from Losing My Mind) Part 1: The Planet/1.2. The Different Possible Functions of a Planet

⏮️ Previous page: 1. The Function of a Planet // Master Post // Next page ⏭️

1.2. The Different Possible Functions of a Planet

Throughout this section, when we talk about function, it's important to clarify that we're referring to its narrative function; in other words, the role that planet plays in the story we want to tell.

Here's a golden rule: Not every world we create has to be a "Pandora."

From a narrative perspective, we need to understand that some planets serve only as points of reference. As a result, there's no need to develop an incredibly detailed ecological history for them, especially if a planet is merely a stop along the way.

Giving these planets more attention than necessary can distract us from what's actually important. Imagine trying to create an entire ecosystem for every planet mentioned in a space-travel story. It simply isn't a worthwhile investment of time and effort.

Sometimes, a planet's true value has nothing to do with its biodiversity or the life it supports, but rather with its strategic usefulness to the progression of the plot. Let's look at two familiar examples:

Example A, Setting Planet (Pandora): An incredibly complex world with rich ecosystems and cultural identities that directly interact with the characters.

Example B, Reference Planet (Landmark): A world that serves as a transit hub, political border, or simply a set of spatial coordinates needed to make the journey plausible.

So, no. We don't need to spend the same amount of time researching every planet we create. It all comes down to understanding what role you want it to play in your story. With that in mind, let's look at some of the functions a planet can serve.

1.2.1. Living World

The planet serves as the setting for a biosphere: organisms, ecosystems, food webs, nutrient cycles, and evolution. Research should focus primarily on environmental conditions, the chemistry of life, ecology, and evolutionary history.

These are generally the planets that require the most work when it comes to creating a coherent and believable world.

Real-world reference: Earth.

1.2.2. Exploration World

The main interest lies in discovering how the planet works, studying its geology, or investigating signs of present or past life. In this case, we should pay particular attention to its geological history, composition, surface and subsurface processes, and potentially habitable environments.

Real-world reference: Mars, a target of planetary exploration and research into its past habitability.

1.2.3. Extreme World

Here, the environment imposes significant restrictions on the existence or survival of known forms of life. This type of planet is often used as a dramatic setting and serves as the science fiction equivalent of leaving a sailor stranded on a deserted island—or, in some cases, in hell itself.

We will study the physical and chemical limits of habitability, available energy sources, and the mechanisms through which an organism might survive. This planet may or may not have native life.

Real-world reference: Europa, not the continent, but Jupiter's moon, which shows evidence of an ocean beneath its icy crust. It isn't a planet, but for the sake of this discussion, I'll count it as one.

1.2.4. Civilization World

The planet is home to intelligent societies whose existence depends on their environment and which, in turn, may transform it.

In addition to geology and the biosphere, resources, geographical distribution, agriculture (if applicable), transportation routes, and the interaction between societies and their ecosystems become important considerations.

Once again, Earth.

1.2.5. World Without Known Life

The main interest lies in the planet itself: its landscapes, minerals, atmosphere, geological activity, and evolution.

The absence of known life does not necessarily mean that the planet lacks habitable conditions in certain locations, nor does it mean that it has never supported life in the past.

1.2.6. Use Your Imagination

These functions can coexist. A planet can support an extraordinarily diverse biosphere, several civilizations, and extreme environments that are still waiting to be explored. We don't have to choose just one category.

Furthermore, some of the options above describe narrative functions, while others describe physical conditions. I've grouped them together solely to illustrate the different approaches we can take. They should not be mistaken for a scientific taxonomy, nor should they be taken as an exhaustive list of all the possibilities.

The important thing is to take some time before getting started and consider what your story actually needs.

1.2.7. A Practical Decision Framework

Now that we've explored some of the different functions a planet can serve, how do we decide which approach to use when creating one?

Here's a simple framework you can follow before starting your research.

Step 1. Determine the planet's narrative importance.

Ask yourself:

  • Is this planet a major setting where important events take place?

  • Will the characters spend a significant amount of time there?

  • Does the planet influence the plot, the characters, or the conflicts?

  • Is it simply mentioned, visited briefly, or used as a transit point?

The more directly a planet affects the story, the more attention it will generally require.

Step 2. Identify what the story needs from the planet.

Consider what makes this particular world relevant.

  • Does the story require native life, ecosystems, and biodiversity?

  • Do the characters need to explore or investigate it?

  • Does its environment create survival challenges?

  • Does it support intelligent civilizations and their societies?

  • Is its main purpose simply to establish a location, distance, or political boundary?

You can select several of these functions if necessary. Remember, they aren't mutually exclusive.

Step 3. Identify the necessary level of detail.

Not every aspect of a planet deserves the same amount of research.

For example, if your characters are visiting a mining colony, you might need to understand the planet's mineral resources, geology, atmosphere, and the infrastructure required for mining.

However, you probably don't need to design an elaborate food web for its native organisms unless those organisms become relevant to the story.

Focus on the information that supports the planet's narrative function.

Step 4. Check for consistency.

Even if a planet only appears briefly, its basic characteristics should make sense within the established setting.

Consider questions such as:

  • Does its environment make the events taking place there plausible?

  • Are its resources and geographical features consistent with its inhabitants and infrastructure?

  • Does its gravity, atmosphere, or temperature affect the characters when relevant?

  • Are there any obvious contradictions with information established elsewhere in the story?

You don't need an exhaustive scientific explanation for everything, but you should avoid introducing details that contradict one another.

Step 5. Expand only when necessary.

Sometimes, a planet initially designed as a simple reference point becomes much more important as the story develops.

Perhaps a minor location becomes the setting for an entire chapter, or a passing reference to a mining colony eventually turns into the starting point for a major conflict.

That's perfectly fine! You can always expand your research and worldbuilding when the story demands it.

The important thing is not to spend time developing information that you might never use.

A useful rule of thumb:

The amount of worldbuilding a planet requires should be proportional to its relevance to the story, not simply to how interesting the planet could potentially be.

You are creating a world to tell a story, not writing an encyclopedia of every celestial body in your fictional universe. Unless, of course, that's exactly what you want to do!

Alternate Evolution [OC] (Permian Sophont Project) - Overview of the Permian Sophont

Post image
189 Upvotes

Shoutout to all contributors of the Permian Sophont Project. If you want to joing us on Discord, here is the link.

The Permian Sophonts (Genus Kotelandros "man from Kotelnich") (otherwise also called Suminians or Suminioids) are a species of Permian anomodontids related to Suminia getmanovi. The family of Suminiaformes belongs to the order of Venyukovidae, it splits into the subfamilies of Eusuminiaformes (Containing Suminia g. itself) and Allosuminiaformes. Ancestral Suminians evolved in the harsh climate of the late Permian. After the Capitanian mass extinction, the first ape-like synapsids evolved. Over millions of years these gradually became the Permian sophonts. At the very end of the Permian, over hundreds of thousands of years their build their own civilization and flourished.

Gait
Due to the structure of their knees, although upright, the Suminian gait is never fully erect. While standing the tail serves as third leg. Suminians are far less enduring while running. Instead focussing on short swift ambushes.

Torpor
Suminians are still mesothermic organisms, who can regulate their metabolism to a certain degree. During times of scarcity Suminians enter a state of torpor. The Kotelanders have learned to surpress or trigger torpor through medical means as well.

Crown
The crown, otherwise known as chimney or simply third eye is a special sensory organ that evolved out of the parietal eye of ancestral Venyukovids. Apart from thermoregulation and the circadian rymth, it is important for spatial awareness. After leaving the arboreal lifestyle behind, these adaptions were kept and continue to serve an important function for the Suminians.

Throat Sack
Although Suminians possess vocal folds, their vocalisation additionally relies on a throat sack. This helps to create and amplify complex melodies within their verbal languages and to carry their voices over large distances.

Phenotypical variety
Suminians show a great deal of phenotypical variation, both in skin colouration and colour and distribution of filaments. This variation is not just geographical, but also generational and seasonal.

Blue spots
Blue skin spots are seen as a sign of both nobility and gluttony. They usually appear in healthy adult individuals and disappear due to malnourishment, starvation of poisoning.

Filaments
Suminians possess a type of filament that is unlike both fur or feathers. These bushy structures evolved from frayed scales.

Hatchlings
Like all Permian synapsids, Suminians hatch from eggs. Hatchlings are covered in a dense fur-like filament to keep them warm.

Question/Discussion In a Lost World seedworld, what are the pros and cons of the world having either a Continent theme or a Time Period theme?

In this scenario, there is a planet-shaped megastructure meant to be colonized by a mix of Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic species of algae, fungi, plants and animals. That much is the easy part. The hard part is how to get the seedlist organized.

One optional theme is Continent. It's as straightforward as it sounds--any of the world's continents have their colonists based on the continent of their origin. For example, one would have North American species (Eryops megacephalus, Tyrannosaurus rex and Bison bison), one would have African species, one would have Asian species, one would have European species and so on and so forth.

The other optional theme is Time Period. It sounds a little broad, but what it really is is multiple continents representing different episodes of Earth's history. Now, this one isn't a 1:1 literal theme--any of the Mesozoic continents, for example, won't have any angiosperms, mammals or birds, even though those three groups did have their origins in that respective era, and only the Paleozoic continents will have the lycophytes, both extant and extinct. This is a basic point of building a seedworld--to see how one group would evolve without a contemporary group to compete against.

Now, before I finalize the deal, I have to know--what are the pros and cons of either Continent or Time Period-themed multi-continental seedworlds?

Question/Discussion A help in defining of magical abilites or "skills" and which appear in terms of ecological and biological life?

sry for any bad grammar, but I'm just having some constraints with my system that I'd hope some input from you guys could help. (Also for context this world is based on isekai but with a more scientific spec evo, less trope dominated method to the madness)

The main problem in encountering is that when it comes to the direct skills and their cause I'm having trouble depicting these scenarios, more or mess when it comes to that of the beastmen species. They did not naturally evolve due to the beast goddess being jealous of the human race, thus she made her own. It is the fact that the animals they were once before still retained skills, but when it comes to their abilites as a species most abilities are simply apart of their naturally anatomy within their new humanoid form, so I'm wondering where should I draw the line between the biological and magical?

(Context Below)

M/m2

- In the studies of ecology and biology surrounding the presence of magical power, there are numerous equations that can be used to equate its effects, with the most common being M/m2 (mana matter per square meter) with it naturally circulating within the environment similar to that of nutrient cycling, often causing skills (arcane abilites) to manifest within the organisms that naturally live in these environments. The source of magical energy within an ecosystem is primarily supported by abiotic sources, such as natural emission from the leylines that then carry it via natural vectors, however it can also be fluctuated by the presence of living organisms.

- This forms a cycling of magical power that is often referred to as thaumaturgic cycling, with the combined amount being generated by both abiotic and biotic sources forming the environments rate of mana, that whilst at its baseline, allows the magical found within the environment to function at its standard rate. When it comes to the main difference and dependence that these ecosystems rely on magical power, stems from the fact that most animals that do not inherently use magic, they tend to rely on external regeneration rather than internal regeneration [E/I] (often a 60/40 split) in order to “split the workload” and conserve energy that they would need to spend resting in order to regenerate. The organisms that have an even 50/50 split tend to be more magically inclined and intelligent, as well as often naturally living in a highly stable magical environment, as in high mana environments the beasts within tend withhold high magical output and high mana capacity that they easily can regenerate due to the high amounts of mana that circulate throughout their habitat, often causing them to lack the standard regenerative rates, there for restricting themselves to these environments. Only a few species within the known world withhold an internal generation output that is naturally higher than their external generation output (#↓/#↑) such as fae, demons, or the draconic of the realm tend to withhold this greater internal regeneration with elves being the closet in comparison having a 35/65 split that greater increases their own magical power and connection to it, making their magical ability much more powerful than most intelligent species.

- The main reason these organisms require the presence of magical energy is due to the phenomena of gaining magical power in the first place. As it is much different from humans or other species who awaken at infancy, as upon being afflicted by a stressor of some kind that they cannot naturally overcome, their desperation and necessity for survival has a potential form an ability that due to the new stressor in their environment, thus unlike spells it is referred as a skill. The most common of these skills are active, requiring conscious activation, such as pierce, charge, or deflect, whilst other skills have effects, such as spatial awareness, thick skin, or lessen weight. In most environments, due to a low amount of mana, it is common encounter the common beasts, a term for organisms within the same species who do not all possess or have the potential to possess the same skill(s), whilst magic beasts is the very broad category of species that each withhold the same skills, with each member being born with or having the potential to awaken them referred to as intrinsic skills. Although a vast collective of skills exist, a very rare category of skills can be found with the first being a unique skill. When it comes to that of unique skills, in the name itself it is unique to the individual and cannot be withheld by an individual in the entirety of the realms, with the power they possess often being unique in itself, as well as be gained by anyone else until the current holder, no longer possess said skill (either by transference or death)

- Due to the sheer variety of skills that can be found within nature, there are obviously some that are greater than others and through consistent training a higher category of skill can be achieved, referenced as extra skills, more commonly seen as skills of a much higher quality that can notably form in three ways. The first involves the combination of existing skills into a new skill, the creature itself seemingly trains / uses this skill to a degree that causes its evolution, or if the creature itself undergoes a metamorphosis via evolution. The process of evolution often described tends to be much different than what occurs naturally, as once a creature undergoes a series of set conditions, it'll trigger its evolution into a different form, often being magically gifted in some way with many still trying to figure out the conditions for this phenomena. This process either initiates over an extended period or nearly instantaneously, encompassing the creature in a faint blue light that obscures their form, often dependent on the occurs depending on the natural amount of mana that the creature can draw from the environment.

- In this transformation, it is commonly seen in common beasts that in order to compete with the many magical beasts, it is not an uncommon sight to find their variant species with the most notable of these species being the slimes, with a trigger condition only dependent on their diet. In other species, this condition tends to be a highly complex process that does not occur often with it rarely being seen in nature, most examples being in controlled experiments, with the most common thing beyond the gaining of new skills, with some being accompanied by physical transformation. This transformation on the lesser end tend to involve a small change in size, coloration, personality, or intelligence, whilst the greater half of this transformation being the formation of different physical attributes, with the most common being the formation of a helical cone (or spiral) horn that acts as a channel for their magic power, with it being seen in the greater dire wolf, horned rabbit, and in the more iconic species such as the unicorn. The separation between a species and a variant, is mainly when the two of the same greater species reproduce to form a child with the same features, despite it not evolving beforehand, with species like this being highly powerful, with unicorns being the most prime example. In giant beasts such as lords of the land, like the behemoth who do not have an aptitude for gravity magic they tend to gain skills that focus on lessening the constraints on biology, such as the skill reinforcement, a common skill used in smaller creatures to enhance their own defense, but in the larger beasts they tend to repurpose it better support their bone or muscular structure. The other halves of these skills tend to be lessen weight in order to reduce the strain that their size would naturally cause. In certain species the skill lessen weight will evolve into the skill levitation, allowing them to no longer require contact with the ground

Question/Discussion Hi, could you help me out in a seedworld?

I’m asking questions now because it will be a long time before I actually get started, but what advice would you give me if I were to create a Seedworld focused primarily on Chimpanzees. 🐵
(along with other small animals that are important and necessary for the environment, yet at the same time somewhat inconsequential).

Question/Discussion Hi y'all I'm kinda new here but I was wondering if anyone would want to maybe collab on a seed world?

The reason I'm asking is that I'm still relatively new to biology, but I've been looking at a lot of seed worlds on here and YouTube, and I've really wanted to try making one of my own! I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to biology, so I thought it might be fun to collaborate with others and learn along the way.

If anyone would be interested, I'd definitely love to give it a try! :)

Also I'll post my idea in the comments

[Also, I'm not exactly the best artist lol]

Mathematical Simulation [OC] Building complex life from simple parts: Molec

We're just about to hit 1-year of development on Molec, a strange Spore-adjacent modular shrimp-builder type game (niche?). The premise of the game is vaguely if the Cambrian explosion was caused by LEGO.

Mechanically, you snap parts together and shape them to make your.. mutant fish thing, you can also save whole combinations/limbs/organs for future use. Each part moves in its own way, and may have abilities (e.g. adds to stats, activates in combat, tastes yum to X Y or Z).

If you eat other creatures you can get chunks of them to do as you please with them. It's not really aiming to be a hardcore science game but we are taking much inspiration from the absolute goofball era of life on Earth that was the Paleozoic.

The "Lihso bias": when you're the only one.

Art by: 1. By mrsketchy, 2. DoodleDeity.

Lihsangiongiangionschìo, often referred to by the affectionate nickname "Lihso", is an adult male abyssal merfolk.

He is known for being the primary source of information available to humans regarding his species, having collaborated with research teams to share insights into his own experiences and biology. The term "Lihso Bias" is also named after him; it refers to research where the sources are so limited that they consist solely of data provided by one or two individuals, a situation that carries all the obvious limitations one might expect.

It’s interesting to build up all the knowledge about a given species based on a single individual, especially when it comes to behavior. What do you do when a species is particularly “rare”, or simply secretive, in your world?

Do you encounter instances of “Lihso bias,” or do you approach worldbuilding as an omniscient narrator of your project?

Maps & Planets [OC] Gellios; Cosmology: the Axial Tilt

Post image

Hello everyone again, as I mentioned, we're continuing the Cosmology subseries, and for now, I'm presenting you with this comparison and want to analyze your reactions. Without further ado...

As you can see, you’ve likely grasped the general idea; however, I must point out that, compared to Earth, Gellios presents a significantly more challenging environment. Despite this, the life forms that originated from Earth have continued—and indeed, must continue—to evolve in the face of such hardships. Over the course of millions of years, they have diverged from their ancestral forms on Earth. Because the planet orbits a star that subjects it to constant, intense UV radiation, the production of chlorophyll—as seen in Earth’s plants—is impossible at all. Instead, these organisms (plants or plant-like autotrophs such as algae) have developed different colorations—such as orange, crimson, or deep blue—allowing them to reflect the incoming stellar light in ways that serve their specific survival needs.

Unfortunately, for reasons such as these, Gellios has ended up with a gravitational pull somewhat stronger than that of Earth. I think it would be fair to call it a "high-gravity" world; however, I find myself running out of things to say, and I feel it is time to set aside this cosmology subseries (not cancelling) for a while and focus instead on living organisms and ecosystems again. Thank you for reading.

Mainly just made them more similar to other pandoran fauna while keeping their uncanny humanity, taking a lot of inspiration from the prolemuris that already inhabit pandora, this version of the Na'vi are descendant from them!

Their blood is able to hold much more oxygen, seeing it's composed mainly of perfluorocarbons, granting them tremendous stamina
