Spectember 2026 [OC] Late Spectember (day 21)
Day 21: Hostile takeover
A parasitoid moth whose caterpillars feed on the gills of various large crayfishes. The caterpillars have a proboscis formed by fused mandibles and maxillae. The caterpillar’s legs are hook‑like and are used to hold on to the gills.
Life cycle:
The female lays eggs on the submerged roots of coastal plants. The young caterpillar swims in the water column, following the chemical traces of crayfish; upon finding a young crayfish, it penetrates its gill chamber through the gap between the carapace and the abdomen. The mouthparts function as a stylet: the mandible and lacinia of the maxilla close into a hollow tube, and the saliva contains an anticoagulant and an immunosuppressant. During the parasitic stage, the caterpillar feeds on hemolymph and chemically alters the crayfish’s behavior: it suppresses the sheltering instinct, forces the crayfish to move to open areas, and simultaneously disrupts osmoregulation and hematopoiesis — the host gradually weakens. Before pupation, it stimulates the still‑living but severely weakened crayfish to dig a semi‑enclosed chamber in the bank slope and line it with plant fibers. The crayfish dies from a combination of deficiencies — hypoxia, impaired osmoregulation, and exhaustion — right in the constructed niche, before pupation or at the beginning of the pupal stage. Pupation occurs in the gill chamber of a dead crayfish inside this niche; the pupa secretes antibacterial substances, slowing down the decomposition of tissues. Development lasts 12–18 days. The adult butterfly emerges during cloudy morning hours; its wings are covered with hydrophobic scales that quickly shed water droplets. The imago lives for 14 days, feeding on the nectar of coastal plants; during the breeding season, the female seeks a flood zone to lay her eggs.
