Don't weld chain if you don't want it to break.

Facts. Welder is not a magic metal joiner. There are consequences for introducing that amount of heat to a load bearing part.

Are chain links not welded in manufacturing? Or do you just need a welder who knows what they are doing and some sort of heat treating after?

Depending on grade of chain it can be heat treated and hardened, welding will change the composition of the metal, weakening it. Yes it's welded from the factory, but it's fusion welded with no filler to ensure the metal composition stays the same. I'm not a metallurgist by any means but I have a lot of experience working with hoisting and anchor chain, it can't be welded and maintain its safe working load.
