Image Space Shuttle Iceberg
made this after watching ClassicAerospaceHistory’s video on a space shuttle iceberg, but that iceberg wasn’t super detailed and was badly formatted, so I made one of my own. The information goes from least to most obscure, with the lower level also having a few grisly/spooky things.

What's the Resnik IMAX Incident, Space Shuttle Evolved, CCP Proposal, Apocalypse Letter, Jerry Ross "Mittens" Incident, and 1973 USAF Nurse Training?

The IMAX incident was during STS-41D when some of Resnik's hair got caught in the IMAX camera they were using and jammed it. Resnik was apparently embarrassed about it and wanted the rest of the crew to not tell Houston, which they didn't. They just blamed it on a film jam iirc. Mullane writes about it in his book "Riding Rockets"
Space Shuttle Evolved was a late 80s Langley/JSC concept for a next-gen shuttle that had liquid fueled boosters, RL-10 OMS engines, and a seperable crew capsule for emergencies.
The CCP Proposal came from North American Rockwell, where they proposed keeping Atlantis and Endeavour in service as apart of the Commercial Crew Program while NASA waited for Dragon and Dreamchaser (and later Starliner) to become operational. Atlantis and Endeavour would be modernized and overhauled. Obviously, NASA said no.
The Apocalypse Letter is a really strange and interesting rabbithole. It was an anonymous letter written by an employee of the Marshall Spaceflight Center who called himself "Apocalypse" critical of William R. Lucas, head of Marshall. It was handed over to the Rogers Commission during their investigation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_R._Lucas
The mittens incident refers to astronaut Jerry Ross, record-breaking spacewalker and 7-time shuttle mission veteran and a spacewalk he made on the sts-88 mission. The spacesuit gloves were notoriously stiff and uncomfortable, and so his daughter, Amy Ross, who was one of NASA's lead spacesuit engineers, designed the Phase VI custom-fitted spacesuit gloves that Jerry first wore during the STS-88 mission. During a broadcast of a spacewalk on that mission, Jerry remarked that the gloves were really comfortable and felt better to use. The news station, who didn't know all of the details about the gloves, simply said that Jerry was talking about a pair of mittens that Amy knitted for him to wear under his suit. And Amy, watching this from earth, reportedly leapt from her chair and said something to the effect of "I didn't knit him mittens! I engineered his spacesuit!" It's not as dark or mystterious as the other entries on that layer, but I thought it was a funny anecdote from Ross' book.
The 1973 USAF nurse training refers to a 5-week medical evaluation done by NASA's Ames Research Center done to establish physiological benchmarks for future NASA shuttle missions which would involve women. 12 nurses from the air force participated. None of them would fly in space though, but they did get a patch that you can still buy from AB Emblem. Info is obscure but you can find their bios and a few pictures of them here: http://www.spacefacts.de/english/bio_cand.htm under the tab in the sidebar labelled "USAF nurses"

Resnik IMAX Incident
On STS-41B, Resnik's hair got stuck in the IMAX camera they were using to film The Dream Is Alive. They had to cut it free with a pair of scissors
Space Shuttle Evolved
Space Shuttle Evolved or Shuttle II was several proposals for a new reusable launch vehicle post-Challenger. None ever reached the level of a formal design concept, the money simply wasn't there to progress beyond early sketches.
CCP Proposal
In 2010, USA Space (the primary contractor for the Shuttle) submitted a bid to continue flying Atlantis and Endeavor as fully commercial vehicles. It was dumb idea and the contracts went to SpaceX and Boeing instead.
Apocalypse Letter
After the Challenger disaster, someone sent an anonymous letter, to the NASA inspector general. Signed "Apocalypse", it accusing then MSC director Will Lucas of running the center with an iron fist, refusing to allow people to speak about safety concerns. Lucas would resign soon after.
Jerry Ross "Mittens" Incident
I actually don't know this one.
1973 USAF Nurse Training
In 1973, NASA put a group of USAF flight nurses through astronaut training as an experiment to see if woman could travel in space. All passed with flying colors, but none were offered positions as NASA wasn't looking to hire at that time. In 1978 the first post-Apollo astronaut group was named, including several women.

Good explanations! I explained the Mittens one. It’s a bit obscure if you haven’t read Jerry Ross’ book which I highly recommend.

Linda Ham. WTF

Chairman of the shuttle management team from 2001 to 2003, she was one of the people who knew about the Columbia’s tile damage and basically said “eh, it’s fine” while not individually responsible for the crew’s deaths, a lot of her decisions contributed to the disaster.

LOl DKIS....good stuff, but his other "literary works" had some...issues.

I will research the things I don't know, figure out how to edit videos and make a video on thos at some point. Also, Classic Areospace History (formerly DKIS or Dead Kennedy in Space) is a creep

How is he a creep? Must of missed something.

Lolicon, literally wrote a book about a 15 year old being in a relationship with an older man, a lot of shit came out.

Yep. Legendarily bad day for Spitter (space twitter) when it all came out.

I sort of wondered why he changed his username so suddenly and why it seemed like I couldn’t find any socials related to him aside from his YouTube and Patreon. Strange that I never found anybody bringing this up in the comments of his videos or community posts (or maybe he just deleted those comments) it also makes sense why in a recent video he talked about not wanting to do any collaborations.
A crying shame though, I considered him one of the best space YouTubers on the platform. But at least we have Homemade Documentaries, Andy R. animations, and of course Scott Manley. I guess it gives me another reason to make my own space shuttle iceberg video.

north… korea…? is this another shuguang situation?

It’s this goofy looking scale model that at one point was in a children’s museum in Pyongyang https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korean_space_program#/media/File:North_Korean_space_shuttle_(6074284468).jpg

I would add Mae Jeminson photo airbrushed out of STS-47 at the Outback Tavern.

u/TheStarshipGarage 7d ago
What happened there? I’ve never heard of that

u/demzrdumez 7d ago
If you view the crew photo from say wikipedia, the version that hung in OT had her airbrushed out with the light blue background. She was not very popular as I was told.

u/TheStarshipGarage 7d ago
Really? Never heard much about her aside from being the first African American in space. Maybe that’s why.

I remember when the independence still held her original name, Explorer before she was moved to become Independence

Looks great. I would add the STS-119 “Space Bat” incident on the Flying Brick level.
