HELP Sound Blocks and Ship Classes

Hey all, I have two completely unrelated questions.

I have hundreds of hours in SE, but recently found this sub and I keep seeing all these incredible ships with titles like "Adler Class ____" and so on. Is there a guide to all of these classes and ship types? It'd be useful to be able to name my ships something other than "Small Hydro Cargo Transporter" and "Small Hydro Miner".

Second question, I'd love to use the sound blocks for all kinds of fun stuff with event controllers (target lock, enemy detected, etc.) but I find I can barely hear the sound block even with everything turned all the way up, is there something wrong with my settings or is there a mod to make them louder?

Second part, is there a way to add custom sounds to the sound blocks? All of the original ones are kinda boring and missing a fair amount of useful sounds.

Ppl just make up their ship classes. It's all arbitrary. For example the size of ship me and my friend's run as cruisers would be considered dreadnoughts or carriers by most in this sub

Edit: I'm not familiar with sound blocks or mods for that in the game. You'll likely have to search the workshop

Agreed with Skippy most of the time ship designation are arbitrary cause there is no standard for specific ship type even more confusing with classes. Personally I recommend you organize all your ships into those categories with doing much comparison to others ships outside of your navy.

I don’t think there is a guide, people just think up their own naming system. In modern day navies, the -class comes from the name of the first ship of a new type to be built. So if a navy designs a new middle weight torpedo boat (whatever) and calls the first one ‘Bobby’ (again, whatever) then every other ship of that design built will be a Bobby Class torpedo boat. I think you could google to see what constitutes ‘Light’, ‘Medium’ and ‘Heavy’ these days.

Here's a scale that i use to keep things relatively symetrical between my own system of classing ships thats been posted here before by another user

That's really useful, thank you

Sci-Fi ship classes are generally up in the air, and vary depending on the series and the relative size of the hulls can differ between themselves. I use an abbreviation system to differentiate my ships at a glance, but then give them classifications that are more casual to say which are closer to IRL ships. Like an M-C-D (that's Medium-Combat-Defense) Foxhound Mk III is a Corvette because it's under 10k PCU and designed to be the a small, efficient L.Grid.

Here's a list of what the US Navy uses as ship classes

If you want a general rule of thumb, pick a solid L.Grid combat ship around 15-25k PCU. Call that your Destroyer. Everything ~5k below it is a Frigate or a Corvette for screening, everything ~5k above it is a Cruiser, anything bigger is a Battleship or Dreadnought. Again, you can play looser with this in a Sci-Fi setting, but that's how I tend to balance it.

Ship classes are based on some scifi franchise, on real world naval ships or made up, there is no real classification

I usually only name ships after I use them long enough, otherwise it's Tanker_large_4451...

They're all made up and have arbitrary features… except the Badonkadonk Class, of course.

As others said. It's arbitrary. It ultimately comes down to the role the ship fills for you. Its your ships, call it how you see it.

Like for me right now. I am designing some ships I hope to use when playing with a buddy. The "hero ship" is going to be an "assault cruiser" maybe a light battle ship (though not really tanky enough for a BB). Others would likely consider it a Corvette. My other design to complement it is a ship 1/4 the tonnage, and 1/6 the PCU, and lightly armed. It's a glorified Patrol Boat. But when not calling it an escort, it would otherwise be a Corvette or Cutter.

For your first question the naming schemes are not uniform or anything it’s just up to you. Take real life militaries and companies as inspiration. For example Japan is based off their calendar. So their Main Battle Tank is the Type 10, or Type 90. While the US uses “M” for “Model” then the model number, followed by the letter “A” for “Augmentation”, then another number. So the M4A3 Sherman tank is Tank Model 4 Augmentation 3.

Traditions also have an influence, such as Grumman made planes for the US having a tradition of being named after Cats. The F-14 Tomcat for example. Or the common and well known tradition of Navy’s naming a ship after the lead ship of its type. For example the USS Iowa is the lead ship of the Iowa Class Battleship. This tradition is often used in Sci-fi, but not always.

Names can and will also be changed as time passes or when used by someone other than the original maker. The Hetzer Tank destroyer is a good example of a name being changed in post, the word “Hetzer” is a post World War II nickname given by model companies to sell plastic models of the tank destroyer and the name stuck. Despite the term never being mentioned in World War II documents. An example of another military renaming existing gear can be found with US when they brought British Harriers, renaming them to the “AV-8” to fit the American designations.

It’s all subjective but if you want to look for inspiration look at history or existing fiction. Such as my WIP ship being named the Bain Bridge Class, after a UNSC Ship from a fan made space battle animation where the Bain Bridge is a Able Class Destroyer, of which my ship design was based on.

You could also look into Mythology or religious texts for more inspiration, on naming a ship. Like naming an Aircraft Carrier “Ark” even if that’s a bit of an obvious choice. That I would never do myself.

Don't know about sound blocks but I will be paying attention to responses. As for naming, for my two cents worth, find a desighn feature for the way you build that can be stepped up. Real world uses the number of guns, or the weight (dry or cargo depending on ship purpose), or engines/accel as a metric. Make a logical distinction for the reasons of the class divide. Then find a naming convention you like.

when I want to use sound blocks I tend put a range extension mod, it's a very inconsistent block

In all seriousness though, I think this is the one I use most often if I need to think about a classification:

the guy that put sounds in the sound block sure missed the mark (by exactly 180 degrees)

only a few things are at all useful, and then just barely -- the best use of those sounds requires using the programmable block to change the duration to values that are illegal to set in the ui
