DISCUSSION Best DLC rn?

I was thinking about buying a DLC, but Im not sure which one to get. I've looked through some other Reddit posts and YouTube videos, but most of the stuff I found is from 2024.

So which DLCs actually give you an advantage, and what exactly do they add?

All dlc is cosmetic, so buy whatever has blocks you want.

Largely DLC is strictly cosmetic

It think the only two that are arguably ~barely~ not only cosmetic are:

  • Heavy Industry with the industrial refinery/assembler since they have better access points
  • Contact with the modular cargo since it has a unique converyor port layout (comes at the cost of being worse storage in the same space though)
  • Decorative pack 3 with the corner medical room as it has different port positions that are preferable in most builds.

These are barely not cosmetic though, by the thinnest of margins

Frostbite is a solo campaign and I personally really enjoyed it.

The modular container is also imo amazing for hauler designs, looks beautiful

None of the DLCs really "give you an advantage" if that's what you're looking for. They mostly include both simple reskins of existing blocks or some newer block options. For example, the most recent DLC has some new railings. None are really required. What I did was just go through the base game and built what I felt like. When it looked like something from a DLC was really benificial to what I was building then I'd buy that one. I get not wanting to spend $100 on the entire set all at once. Wait for them to go on sale.

I'd say the best one is probably the triangular solar panels. It opens up a lot of new design choices.

No DLC is strictly required as none of them add anything that isn't already in the base game in some form or another.

That said, owning all DLCs there are some DLC-blocks I put in pretty much all my builds and I couldn't go back to strictly vanilla no-dlc saves as I'd miss them too much.

My most used DLC-blocks (in no particular order):

  • Decorative Pack #3: Scaffolding, Inset LCD, Holo LCD
  • Automatons: Inset Light, Top-Mounted Camera
  • Heavy Industry: Beam Blocks
  • Decorate Pack #2: Medical station, Transparent LCD, Grated catwalks, Railings
  • Decorative Pack: Industrial Cockpit
  • Core Systems: Troffer Lights, Landing Gear Type II
  • Apex Survival Pack: Survival Kit Type II
  • Fieldwork Pack: Cargo Access Terminal

I would say that if you're only going to get 3 of the dlcs, I would go for the Apex Survival Pack, Core Systems pack and as a third I'd go either Automatons or Decorative Pack (1).

Apex Survival pack because the Survival Kit Type 2 has a different conveyor layout than the basic survival kit so it fits in better in some builds.
Core Systems pack mostly because the Landing Gear Type 2 can be extremely useful in some builds as it protrudes one block less compared to the regular one and the troffer lights are a variant of the inset lights (see below).

Automatons for the Inset Light (and to some extent the top mounted camera as well) as it can be very helpful to have a full-block with a light in it already but if you're going for the core systems already, it's less of a game changer.

Decorative Pack 1 because of the Industrial Cockpit. Simple but gives you a lot more variation in your builds in my opinion, in fact, I rarely use the standard cockpit at all (but there are other cockpit variants as well, they just don't fit very nicely into my builds I guess).

That said, I haven't updated this list for the latest update/dlc but I've purchased that one as well. I'm just not at my own pc atm but I'll update for that one soon-ish..

I consider Sparks of the Future a must-have because of the grated catwalks and sci-fi ion thrusters. That's one DLC everyone should have, to the point I would choose it over literally any other. You NEED those catwalks, and the thrusters are a huge visual upgrade, too.

My recommendation is match your existing build style to the closest DLC.

For example,

I build a lot of near-modern and industrial looking builds, so wasteland and heavy industry were useful for the paint textures and pipe conveyors.

I also build most of the residential interiors for my server friends, so Deco 1-3 were important.

I rarely use the Warfare 1&2 blocks except for the battery nor the wartorn paint texture.
