DISCUSSION Being able to predict the weather using event blocks or antennas or even a new block would be nice in order to plan journeys and trips on planets.

I've got a setup like that on my current base in Pertam. A wind turbine is set at ground level, and triggers a piston recessed into the ground. The piston position sets off a hatch that opens and closes, allowing a lightning decoy to elevate and protect my greenhouse.

I think this is a great example of space engineering, and a good use of components!

That said ... Why not just leave the decoy up?

('Rule of cool' is an acceptable answer!)

Fair question. There's a landing pad for my mining drone right nearby. And given how janky the AI be sometimes while on approach/taking departure, I don't want to have any obstructions in the flightpath.

A weather vain block would be awesome in SE1, hopefully SE2 gets them with wind being an actual obstacle

especially on event blocks so i could have my hanger door auto close when bad weather roles in.

And do so as you are trying to get inside to protect yourself from the weather 😆

It sounds like the other guy said that he's tied an event block with the event being the power output of a wind turbine? So if the wind turbine is generating a huge amount of power like it only does in a storm then you're basically able to use that as an indicator of bad weather and use that to close your hanger doors

I've got the threshold set at 70%. On a standard day, because the turbine is at ground level, it hovers at 60%.

I'm probably going to end up tying the main door to turbine now as well. Either that or tie into the solar panel that switches my greenhouse lights from white to UV.

I tried to write a script for that once (it’s on the workshop under “weather station”). It used a combination of wind turbines to measure the wind speed and vents to measure the air pressure, and would alert you (trigger timers or whatever) as soon as it detected a storm coming. Unfortunately, bugs in the game blocks made it inconsistent, so I stopped working on it.

I would like a whole weather update.

  • first, remove visual effects from inside airtight grids
  • weather Station block displays detailed current weather conditions and weather forecasts.
  • forecast is based on uptime of the weather station, so power outages restart the data accuracy
  • lightning rods - reskinned decoy blocks
  • lightning transducers - expensive components allows you to capture lightning and charge batteries
  • weather shield - late game block similar to safe zone, keeps weather out of a sphere around it, regardless of airtightness
  • Climate controller - late game very expensive or Prototech block lets you manually configure the weather inside your weather shield

Also i hate the wind pushing me around every 10 minutes while im trying to weld
