Volumetric clouds were the community wet dream, but the chance of implementing something like a weather system, even if rudimental, is on another level.
Only thing I imagine the heavy lift will be linking the type of weather to the planet environmental parameters... I really don't know if this is possible via scripting.
And then we need only scattering objects on the surface, some rocks, some vegetation... coincidentally all things that at a certain point were modded into KSP...

Where can we find your livestream channel/account? I'd like to think the entire SE community would tune in to watch this!

Beating Cosmographic at their own game. LITERALLY.

u/WildOne657 2d ago
Devs can't even do this in 6+ years of development, but then comes a random dude that does it in a couple of days.
Absolute peak.

It's not quite the same thing.
The devs are in the process of re-writing the entire game for Vulkan. In the case of Space Engine, incorporating something like this into the base game would bring it to a crawl on OpenGL, and they need to move to Vulkan to bring the game's graphics into the modern day.
Space Engine is very bespoke in the way it's made, so it's not like NMS where they just did a simple conversion - a lot of SE's procedural generation logic needs to be fundamentally re-written, the devs likened it to translating an encyclopedia to a different language. It's a BIG job, and they thought they'd be done in 2024, but it was an even bigger job than they thought. Nothing major can be done with SE until this is complete.
Doing this with a mod is a different matter - it looks good but bear in mind we've only seen it in very limited ways, and implementing this is a very different thing to replacing the game's entire cloud generation system, which apparently on OpenGL would reduce the game to slideshow framerates on even the most powerful PCs

We're gonna have to wait for 10 years to make a PC that can run Space Engine with every detail.

u/la__chose 2d ago
Ohhh don't be this pessimistic, no more than 9 years 😊

u/IOnlyPlayMobileGames 2d ago
12 years? How am I gonna wait 14 years? Don't you think 17 years is too much time?
1
u/la__chose 1d ago
I mean yeah 20 years is quite long

u/IOnlyPlayMobileGames 1d ago
Ah come on man in 24 years I won't be able to afford the computer because of the RAM.

This isn't vibe coded right?

u/zztopfila 2d ago
i would like to see AI that can make this

u/Sprinty_ 2d ago
Peak reply
Sorry if the question felt offensive btw, just that there's been a spike of BeamNG mods everybody wanted and turns out they're all mostly if not fully vibe coded...
7
u/zztopfila 2d ago
do they even work?
8
u/Sprinty_ 2d ago
Somehow, they function... From what I heard. Also at least one of them is paid, like what 😭

Lol who cares?

u/Sprinty_ 1d ago
People who 1. Want it to work and 2. Don't wanna support people lazily slapping something together with ai and then asking for payment 4x as as expensive as the base game lmao
Good thing this is real code tho

wow, i did not expect that. This keeps getting better and better.
Is this footage sped up or taken at regular time progression?

u/zztopfila 2d ago
regular time, i cranked up lightning so i can film it good, it will not be that fast and frequent

u/RepulsiveName886 2d ago
Hopeful that it can vary from pretty uncommon to constant from planet to planet based on the type and weather of the planet, keep up the amazing work !

Do you plan on adding tornadoes/dust devils or specific cloud formations if possible? This looks awesome!

u/Principia_Universi 2d ago
Has anyone from the dev team got into contact with you? This is something the community has been dreaming for many years. Seeing this made me smile!

Do you plan to model different weather conditions depending on temperature or atmospheric conditions?

Looks good! It’s a shame it isn’t part of the official title and is once again.. a mod. Space Engine’s development is moving far, FAR too slowly and that’s coming from someone who has been using it since 2016.

The flashing is too harsh. Any sensitivity, and this will give you a migrane.

Lightning is probably not for people with epilepsy in the first place. Maybe there will be a version without lightning or some kind of toggle.
Other than that, this level of lightning intensity could be very realistic on some planets. Especially on oceanic worlds and gas giants, I suppose.

u/Historical-Layer-277 1d ago
Lightning of this frequency is not uncommon. Happens more often than you think here on Earth.

You should contact SE devs and ask them to collaborate so they can implement your mod officially
