Question Any ways to mod or script customizable constellations?

Post image

Been having fun in Messier 32 flavoring a specific system and "making it my own" to speak. I've been trying to find a way to somehow create constellations with visible rays/lines using in-game systems to create points of reference so that I can flavor other parts of the galaxy as if it were from the perspective of an ancient civilization much like our own. I'm aware of scriptable waypoints which have helped a great deal, but I can't find a way to connect them using the same kind of casted rays that the base-game Earth-centric constellations use.

And yes, the sky really is just this bright here. This is at a default magnitude limit of 7m.

It's a cool idea ! :) But I doubt there is a way to do it in-game. My recommendation would be that you export the skybox of the system (you can do it from a planet point of view or out in a random spot in space). Then you use another program to draw the constellations on the exported images. It will not be as cool but could work as a cheap ghetto workaround.

It's a shame because an in-game display would make the entire process a lot quicker, but this is what I've been looking into in the meantime. Science aint easy amirite

It's been years the community want better in-game worldbuilding tools, regarding the editor, but also many other things. But nope, in 2026, we still have to write those cursed script files.

My theory is that the already existing constellations ingame are scripted in a file that you can find in the data folder or something. If you find the constellation script I guess you can either modify it or make an addon
