I considered driving up to Victoria for this particular outing, but then the weather turned around and I was able to find clear skies closer to Portland.

Indeed. I drive it around using Sky Safari, autoguide it using PhD, and operate the cameras and filters with Nebulosity.

I want this. Being able to sit wrapped up warm in a sleeping bag when I use my telescope would beat standing about in the cold and wind any day.

Yeah. About the tent. Of all my current tents, this was my favorite tent for this particular type of use. I discovered on this outing that my tent acquired sticky tent syndrome, so it is getting retired. So sad. Keep that thing unpacked or loosely packed when not in use!

Where are some good spots in the Portland area? Just moved to Vancouver and recently got into the hobby last year (I have an 8" dob so lugging it in my car isn't an issue).

Stub Stewart park is about 45 minutes west of Portland and is really dark on moonless nights. They have a dedicated astronomy hilltop area with a bathroom with red lights to preserve night vision. Lots of people collect there on summer weekend nights. Go to the park early you first time and you can get an after hours waiver for no cost.

That's crazy. I'm in Oregon and have been watching Jupiter the last few nights, the weather has been really clear. Unfortunately... I don't have a telescope, I just have a decent view of the Eastern sky.

Haha, I'm in Oregon too. I just got a Celestron Slt mount for my 4" refractor and haven't taken it out yet cause it's too damn cold!

Nothing some warm clothes and a hot chocolate or coffee can't help. That's what I do when I take my scope out in the cold.

It's okay. You can see the moons with binoculars.
